For many active gamers, Xbox Game Pass was the stronger all-purpose value in 2024—especially for people who played on Xbox and PC, wanted eligible new releases on day one, or used cloud gaming. PlayStation Plus was the better fit for people already invested in PS4 or PS5: Essential covered online play, Extra added a substantial downloadable catalog, and Premium added classics, trials, and streaming in supported markets. If you only needed online multiplayer or planned to play for a month or two, a lower tier—or no year-round subscription—could be the smarter choice.
This is a U.S. 2024 snapshot, not a guide to current plans or prices. Xbox changed its lineup during the year: Game Pass Standard arrived on September 10, and other plan names, prices, and benefits also shifted. Catalogs and availability varied by region and date.

These are useful comparisons, not exact equivalents. Essential is closest to Core for online-play needs; Extra is closer to Standard for catalog access, though their libraries differ. Premium and Ultimate overlap on some premium features but are not interchangeable: Ultimate was the stronger fit for PC access and eligible day-one releases, while Premium’s distinctive draw was its PlayStation classics and trials.

New-release timing is Game Pass’s clearest advantage
In 2024, Microsoft made access to eligible new releases on launch day a central Game Pass selling point. That was especially relevant for Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. Microsoft promoted titles including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for eligible plans; the exact plan matters, so do not assume every Game Pass tier included every day-one release. In late 2024, Standard did not include the same day-one offering as Ultimate.
PlayStation Plus offered monthly games and a changing catalog, but Sony’s major first-party releases were not generally included in Plus at launch in 2024. That does not mean Sony never added a game near release, or that no game could ever arrive on day one; it means Plus was not generally a day-one route to Sony’s major new releases in the way Microsoft positioned Game Pass.
If you would otherwise buy one eligible new game at launch, a short Game Pass subscription may be worthwhile. But count only games you actually want, can play while included, and would otherwise have purchased. A game’s retail price is not automatically money saved.

Catalog access is not ownership
Both services offer games through subscriptions, but the entitlement depends on how the game is offered:
- Rotating catalog: Extra, Premium, and Game Pass catalog titles are playable while available in the catalog and while the relevant subscription is active. Downloading one does not buy it. If it leaves the service, access ends unless you purchase it separately.
- PlayStation monthly games: Add eligible monthly games to your library during the claim window. You can play them while your Plus membership remains active; this is a different entitlement from a rotating Game Catalog title.
- Purchased games: A game you bought remains separate from the subscription, subject to the platform’s normal account and licensing terms.
- Trials: Premium trials let you try selected games for a limited time; they are not full permanent access.
Catalogs change, and availability can differ by country, platform, and date. Before starting a long campaign, check whether the game is due to leave. Microsoft notes that its library can vary by country and over time in its Game Pass Core announcement.
Which service is better for online multiplayer?
On PlayStation, all three Plus tiers included online multiplayer for supported paid games. On Xbox, Core, Standard, and Ultimate included online console multiplayer. PC Game Pass is about the PC catalog and related benefits; PC multiplayer generally does not require a paid Xbox console multiplayer plan.

There is an important exception: many free-to-play console games—including Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone—generally do not require a paid console multiplayer subscription for online play. If those are the only games you play online, do not buy Essential or Core solely for multiplayer without checking the specific game and platform requirements.

For a player who owns games and only needs paid-game online play, the cheapest relevant tier is usually the right comparison: Essential on PlayStation or Core on Xbox. Do not pay for a large catalog, cloud access, or classics you will not use.
Price: use the right 2024 snapshot
Sony’s U.S. annual prices after the increase effective for new 12-month purchases on September 6, 2023 were $79.99 for Essential, $134.99 for Extra, and $159.99 for Premium, according to Sony’s announcement. These are annual-plan figures, not a promise that every buyer or promotion paid exactly that amount.

Xbox’s lineup and prices changed during 2024. Game Pass Standard launched in September, and Xbox also changed other plan details during the year. The available historical sources here do not establish a complete, reliable U.S. price table for every Xbox plan and every point in 2024, so assigning one price to “Game Pass” would be misleading. For a late-2024 comparison, consult the dated Xbox tier guide; do not substitute a present-day price page for a historical 2024 price.
As a starting point, the original U.S. launch price for Core was $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year in 2023, as Microsoft stated in its Core announcement. That launch figure should not be treated as a complete or definitive 2024 price quote after subsequent changes.
What do you actually get from each service?
PlayStation Plus: straightforward console choices
- Essential makes the most sense if you mainly play purchased PS4 or PS5 games online. Monthly games and discounts are extras, not a substitute for a catalog you will regularly use.
- Extra is the clearest upgrade if you have a PlayStation backlog and want to download catalog games locally. It is the tier most worth comparing with a console catalog plan.
- Premium is not automatically the best tier because it costs more. Choose it for its classics catalog, selected trials, or streaming features—not just because it is the top option.
Sony’s tier and launch overview describes its catalog, classics, and streaming features. Streaming support and the available games depend on market and platform; Sony’s classic and PS3 offerings do not all work the same way. Local downloads are a better fit if you want to avoid streaming’s network and latency requirements.

Game Pass: strongest when you use more than one part
- Core is the economical place to start if Xbox online multiplayer is your main need and its select library appeals to you.
- Standard, available from September 10, was for console players wanting online multiplayer plus catalog access without Ultimate’s full package and day-one benefits.
- PC Game Pass is the most direct choice for PC-first players: it provides a native Windows catalog and EA Play. Console and PC catalogs are not identical, and a PC entitlement does not necessarily mean the same game is available on console.
- Ultimate earns its higher level only if you will use enough of its combination: console and PC access, eligible day-one releases, cloud gaming, EA Play, or other included benefits.
Microsoft describes PC Game Pass and Ultimate in its late-2024 tier guide. Some PC games may use additional launchers or have platform-specific requirements.

In 2024, Game Pass Ultimate had the broader cloud-gaming proposition for people moving among supported devices. Microsoft described streaming to supported devices including mobile devices, tablets, and PCs in its Xbox getting-started guide. PlayStation Plus Premium also offered streaming for supported games and markets, with the available platforms and titles varying by region.
Neither service guarantees the same result everywhere. Cloud play depends on a supported country, device, plan, game, controller, network speed, and latency. A fast connection with low latency matters, and streaming is not identical to downloading and playing locally. Do not choose a premium tier for cloud gaming until you confirm that your device and region are supported and that the specific games you want can be streamed.

- You own a PS5 or PS4 and mainly need online play: Choose Essential if you play paid games online. If you play only free-to-play titles, you may not need a paid multiplayer tier at all.
- You own a PlayStation and want a broad console backlog: Choose Extra if enough catalog games interest you. Use Premium only if classics, trials, or streaming are meaningful to you.
- You want eligible Xbox releases on day one: In late 2024, Ultimate was the relevant broad package; Standard was not a substitute for its day-one access. Check the specific title and plan before subscribing.
- You mainly play on a Windows PC: Game Pass is the clearer choice between these services because PC Game Pass provides native PC access and EA Play. PlayStation Plus Premium streaming is not an equivalent PC catalog.
- You play on both Xbox and PC: Ultimate may be worth it if you will use both ecosystems, cloud access, or day-one releases. Otherwise compare PC Game Pass and a cheaper console tier against your actual play habits.
- Your household uses Xbox and PC: Ultimate can make sense if several people use its features, but do not assume one subscription automatically gives every account or device unrestricted access. Check current account-sharing, family, and parental-control rules.
- You are a retro PlayStation fan: Premium has the more specific appeal through its classics catalog and trials. Check whether the individual games you want are available in your region and on your console.
- You play only one or two games a year: Usually buy the games you want, wait for a sale, or subscribe month-to-month while you play. An annual plan is not a saving if most of its months go unused.
A practical way to calculate value
Two quick calculations help keep the decision grounded:
- Annual-plan test: Divide the annual subscription price by the number of games you would genuinely have bought and played from the service. Compare that with what you would actually have spent—not the combined list prices of every included title.
- Short-subscription test: Divide the monthly cost by the months you will actively use the service. If you only want one game, compare one or two months of access with buying it outright or waiting for a sale.
For example, if you want to finish one catalog game over a month, a short subscription may cost less than buying it. But if you would keep the game, play it after it leaves, or can buy it cheaply on sale, ownership may suit you better. Conversely, a player who will play several eligible launch releases and other catalog games throughout the year may get more from an annual higher tier. There is no universal break-even count: it depends on the games, their time in the catalog, and what you would otherwise pay.
Verdict
Pick Game Pass for a PC-and-console ecosystem, eligible day-one releases, and cloud access; pick PlayStation Plus for PlayStation online play or its downloadable PS4/PS5 catalog. In either case, choose the lowest tier that covers what you will really use. If your preferred games are absent, you mostly play free-to-play games, or you will only play for a short stretch, buying individually or subscribing only for selected months may be better than paying year-round.
