Yes. PlayStation Portal can connect to more hotel, airport, café and other public Wi‑Fi networks than it could at launch. The key changes arrived in 2024: software version 3.0.0 added support for selected networks requiring extra sign-in, and version 3.0.1 expanded compatibility to some public 5GHz networks. This is an existing capability, not a new August 2026 feature, and Sony still describes coverage as a “range” or “select” networks rather than every hotspot.
When a network needs extra validation, Portal displays a QR code. A phone or tablet scans it and completes the venue’s web-based login. Portal does not gain a general-purpose web browser.

How public Wi‑Fi sign-in works
- Open Portal’s network setup and select the venue’s Wi‑Fi network.
- If additional validation is required, Portal shows a QR code.
- Scan the code with a smartphone or tablet.
- Complete the venue’s sign-in flow, such as accepting terms, entering a room number or access code, or providing an email address.
- Return to Portal and start Remote Play after the device reports a connection.
The documented QR process requires the phone or tablet for the extra authentication step. A hotspot may still fail if its portal or device-registration system is not supported.

Prepare before leaving home
Sony says Portal’s initial setup must be completed on home Wi‑Fi before you use a public network. Finish this checklist while you can still reach the PS5:
- On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and select Enable Remote Play.
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Use the same PlayStation account on the PS5 and Portal.
- Complete Portal’s initial setup on your home network and install the latest available Portal software.
- Test a Remote Play session at home before travelling.

What the PS5 still needs
Public Wi‑Fi only connects Portal to the internet; ordinary Remote Play still reaches your own PS5. The console must be paired with Portal, connected to broadband, signed in to the same account, and either powered on or able to wake from Rest Mode. A wired Ethernet connection to the PS5 is preferable when available because it removes one variable from the connection.

Speed is only part of the test
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps for Portal use and 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are connection-speed guidelines, not guarantees of smooth play. The session depends on two links: Portal to the public access point, and that access point through the internet to your home PS5.

- Latency and packet loss can make controls feel delayed even when a speed test looks fast.
- Busy venues, distance from the access point and radio interference can cause drops.
- Uploads, downloads or other traffic on the home network can degrade the stream.
- Networks may block gaming, streaming or unusual outbound traffic.
Sony generally recommends 5GHz Wi‑Fi for Portal, but public 5GHz support remains selective and can be affected by regional or regulatory restrictions. A venue’s 2.4GHz guest network may work when its 5GHz SSID does not, although it can be more congested.
Where it is likely to work—and where it may not
Hotels, airports, cafés and other guest hotspots are possible candidates when they offer a supported sign-in flow and a stable connection. Do not treat the venue type as a guarantee. Compatibility depends on the access point’s authentication, configuration and traffic policies.

- Reasonable to try: a guest SSID with a simple password or QR-assisted web validation, good signal and permission for streaming traffic.
- Poor fit: enterprise authentication, mandatory device registration, unsupported captive portals, blocked gaming traffic, repeated logins, incompatible 5GHz configurations or severe congestion.
- Bring a fallback: a phone hotspot can work if your plan allows tethering and cellular coverage is strong, but data limits, throttling and carrier network behavior still apply.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
Portal sees the network but cannot finish sign-in
- Update Portal, forget the network and reconnect.
- Scan the QR code again and complete every required field, including a room number or access code.
- Ask venue staff for a guest SSID rather than an employee or enterprise network.
- Try a separately offered 2.4GHz network.
- If the portal remains incompatible, use a phone hotspot where permitted.
To reopen network setup, swipe left from the top-right corner, then choose Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Move closer to the access point if the signal is weak.
Portal connects, but Remote Play will not start
- Check that the PS5 is online and still signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- Confirm Remote Play remains enabled.
- Confirm Rest Mode internet and network-wake settings are enabled.
- Test whether the public network is blocking or degrading the connection.
The game starts but feels laggy
A successful Wi‑Fi login does not prove that the route is suitable for interactive streaming. Move nearer to the access point, stop other traffic on the public or home network, and try a less busy time or different SSID. If latency and packet loss remain high, changing Portal settings cannot make that hotspot reliable.

Remote Play versus cloud streaming
Remote Play streams games installed on your own PS5 and requires the console’s broadband connection and Rest Mode configuration. It does not require PlayStation Plus.
Cloud streaming on current Portal software can run supported PS5 games without connecting to your console, but it requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription and an eligible game, account and region. Sony’s current details are in its cloud-streaming support page and PlayStation Plus plans. Cloud streaming removes the PS5-at-home requirement for that session, not the need for low-latency, uncapped public internet.
Is Portal a dependable travel handheld?
Public-network support makes Portal substantially more useful for travel, but it does not make every hotel or airport hotspot compatible. Buyers should value access to stable Wi‑Fi at both ends of the connection more than the existence of the feature itself. If your trips routinely provide a phone for QR authentication, permissive guest networks and a reliable home connection, Portal can be practical. If you need offline play or guaranteed performance on arbitrary public networks, it is the wrong tool.
