Claiming a PlayStation Plus monthly game adds it to your library, but it is not the same as buying it outright: you need an active PlayStation Plus membership to play it. Free-to-play downloads are different, and most do not require Plus. The key is knowing which kind of “free game” you added.
What happens when you claim a PlayStation Plus monthly game?
A claimed monthly game is added to your PlayStation account’s game library. PlayStation’s FAQ says you can download and play monthly games “as long as you have an active membership plan.” That makes the claim a membership benefit, not a permanent, unrestricted purchase.
The claim and the download are separate steps in PlayStation’s instructions. If you add a monthly game to your library while it is offered, the support guidance does not say that you must finish downloading it during the offer window. You still need an active membership to play it.
Can you play claimed games after PlayStation Plus ends?
No. PlayStation says that when a subscription ends, access to Plus benefits—including monthly games—ends too. If you cancel but have already paid for time remaining, your benefits continue until the end of that payment period. Afterward, you cannot play claimed monthly games while your membership is inactive.

This describes access to play; it does not establish that the library record is deleted. PlayStation’s guidance also does not specify identical behavior for every game’s library display, save data, or entitlement state, so those should not be assumed from the membership rule alone.
Which kind of “free game” did you add?

These categories answer different questions: whether a game is a monthly Plus benefit, a free-to-play download, or part of a rotating catalog. For a specific title, check its Store listing and your account’s regional membership information; the general rules do not establish every game’s current availability or any title-specific exception.

How to add a monthly game to your library
PlayStation says new monthly games are added each calendar month. Its support instructions give these console paths:
- PS5: Open PlayStation Plus, go to Benefits, choose Monthly Games, then select Download.
- PS4: Open PlayStation Plus, choose Monthly Games, then select Add to Library and Download.
You can also select games for remote download in a browser or the PlayStation App. Since adding a game and downloading it are distinct actions in PlayStation’s instructions, do not confuse downloading with the library claim.
