pmxapi.dll is an old 32-bit PowerVR KYRO component from Imagination Technologies, not a Windows system file. If Windows says pmxapi.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the original KYRO driver or the application that installed it instead of copying a loose DLL into a Windows folder.
The file’s internal description is “Hardware Abstraction Layer.” That description does not make it the same file as Windows hal.dll, and it does not mean that pmxapi.dll belongs in System32 or SysWOW64.

Common reported messages include:
- “This application failed to start because pmxapi.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because pmxapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading pmxapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: pmxapi.dll.”
- “pmxapi.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Failed to load pmxapi.dll.”
The wording varies by program. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by pmxapi.dll is missing.
Before changing anything: identify what is loading pmxapi.dll
Do this first. The executable requesting the file determines whether you need to repair an old application, restore a quarantined file, or reinstall a KYRO graphics package.

Record these details:
- The complete error message.
- The name of the program or game that fails.
- The shortcut target or executable name.
- The folder containing that executable.
- Your Windows version.
- Whether the computer still has a PowerVR KYRO or KYRO II graphics card.
- Whether the problem began after antivirus quarantine, a driver uninstall, disk cleanup, moving the application, or restoring an old disk image.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Open the target folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether
pmxapi.dllis missing from the application or driver directory.
Do not assume that the program named in the shortcut is the original owner. An old shortcut can point to a removed installation, a copied folder, or a bundled executable.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
For a normal application or game, this is the safest and most likely fix. pmxapi.dll is associated with the PowerVR KYRO software stack, but the file may have been installed beside an older program that uses that driver component.
Use the program’s own repair option
Check the application launcher first:
- Open the launcher.
- Open its settings or library menu.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate installation.
- Run the verification.
- Restart the application.
If the launcher restores the file and the program opens, do not move the restored DLL elsewhere. Leave it in the directory selected by the installer.
Repair a conventional Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
Windows 10 uses a similar path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
Microsoft documents these repair and removal options in its program installation and removal guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the application and reinstall it from the original publisher, original installation media, or a trusted backup of the installer.
Before uninstalling, preserve saved games, configuration files, and license information if the application uses them. Do not copy pmxapi.dll from another computer unless you are restoring the complete, trusted application package with the same architecture and driver version.
What success looks like: the original program starts without the error, and the file is present in the application or driver directory selected by the installer.
If it fails: continue with the quarantine check below, then investigate the KYRO driver and dependency path.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may have removed an old driver DLL because legacy files are uncommon or lack modern signing information. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malicious, and the absence of a detection does not prove that every loose copy is safe.
Check the protection history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
pmxapi.dll, the affected application, or the old graphics driver. - Note the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
Only consider restoration when all of these are true:
- The original path belongs to the known application or KYRO driver.
- You obtained the application or driver from a trusted original source.
- The file is part of a complete installation, not a random download.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as unsafe.
If the file was quarantined from an unexpected directory, a temporary download folder, or System32, do not restore it merely because the filename matches. Reinstall the trusted application or driver instead.
Microsoft describes the available Restore and Allow on device actions in its Protection History guidance.
After restoring a trusted file, launch the original program again. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, stop restoring it and obtain a clean installer or driver package. Do not repeatedly exclude the file from antivirus protection.
What success looks like: the application starts after restoration, and the file remains in its original trusted directory.
If it fails: the file may be damaged, a dependency may be missing, or the application may be looking in a different directory. Continue with a complete reinstall rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete KYRO or KYRO II graphics package
Time needed: 20–60 minutes, plus restart time
pmxapi.dll belongs to the old PowerVR KYRO graphics-driver stack. If the computer still uses KYRO or KYRO II hardware, reinstall the complete card or OEM driver package for that exact card and operating system.

Confirm whether KYRO hardware is present
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the exact adapter name.
- Also expand Other devices and look for an unknown display device.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, record the provider, date, and version shown.
Do not uninstall the device yet if you do not have the correct replacement package. Removing the existing driver without a recovery plan can leave the system using a basic display driver.
Reinstall the original package
Use the original card manufacturer, system manufacturer, or installation media as the source. The package must match:
- The exact KYRO or KYRO II card.
- The Windows generation it supports.
- The system architecture.
- Any required OEM customization.
Close applications, run the installer as administrator, and restart when requested. If the installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, do not force random files into system folders. The original driver may require an older supported Windows environment.
After restarting:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Confirm that the expected adapter is present without a warning icon.
- Open the affected application from its original installation directory.
- Check whether the error returns.
For an old installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Also select Run this program as an administrator if the installer requires it.
- Apply the settings and run the installer.
Compatibility mode may help an installer start, but it cannot make an unsupported legacy display driver reliable on every current Windows installation.
Manually hunting through old hardware-driver versions is error-prone, particularly when the card model is unclear or the vendor has published several packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling the original KYRO package remains the definitive fix for this file.
What success looks like: Device Manager shows the correct adapter, the driver installs without errors, and the affected program loads pmxapi.dll from its original driver or application directory.
If it fails: the current operating system may not support the KYRO driver reliably, or the program may be using a bundled copy. Continue with architecture and dependency checks.

Fix 4: Confirm the 32-bit application and dependency architecture
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Public file records identify pmxapi.dll as Win32, meaning it is a 32-bit component. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs compatible 32-bit components.
Do not replace it with a supposed 64-bit copy. A listing that labels the file “x64” conflicts with the available Win32 identification and should not be treated as authoritative.
Check the application:
- Right-click its executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check whether it is an old 32-bit program.
- Confirm that the shortcut points to the intended installation folder.
If the program requires Microsoft Visual C++:
- Identify the runtime named by the complete error or dependency diagnostic.
- Install the matching Microsoft redistributable architecture.
- For a 32-bit application, install the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Microsoft’s supported package names include vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. The official packages are listed in the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
Installing Visual C++ does not replace pmxapi.dll. It only helps when the error is actually caused by a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. Older applications may also require an older runtime family rather than the newest package.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” inspect dependencies rather than assuming the named file is absent. A complete reinstall of the application or KYRO driver is safer than downloading several unrelated runtime DLLs.
What success looks like: the application starts after the correct x86 dependency is installed, or the diagnostic identifies and resolves the missing supporting component.
If it fails: return to the original installer. A dependency repair cannot correct a missing or incompatible KYRO driver component.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use DISM and System File Checker when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged system applications, repeated component errors, failed updates, or several unrelated programs failing. These commands repair protected Windows components. They are not a source for a third-party KYRO DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Microsoft provides the procedure in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retest.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the broader Windows repair state and consider recovery options.
Repeating SFC will not recreate a missing vendor DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair issues need attention before you keep repeating DISM and SFC; its full-version repair is optional, and the original KYRO application or driver installer remains the definitive source for pmxapi.dll.
What success looks like: other Windows component errors disappear and the affected program starts because its dependency problem was repaired.
If it fails: treat pmxapi.dll as an application or driver problem, not a Windows system-file problem.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver removal, application change, update, or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore.
Save current work first. System Restore can change installed programs, drivers, and system settings, but it does not replace a trusted application installer.
Use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options if System Restore is unavailable or does not resolve the issue.
What success looks like: the application launches and the driver or application state matches the earlier working configuration.

If it fails: reinstall the original package or move the application to an older supported Windows environment.
Do not use these shortcuts
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the application’s dependencies. A loose replacement also leaves the removed driver or damaged application installation unresolved.
Use the original publisher, card manufacturer, OEM recovery media, or a verified backup of the complete installer instead.
Do not copy pmxapi.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows searches locations according to the application, loader, and environment. Copying a legacy graphics DLL into a Windows directory can create version conflicts, path confusion, and security problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestore it to the directory selected by the original installer.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not make an arbitrary runtime or graphics-driver DLL usable. Microsoft explains the command in its regsvr32 documentation.
pmxapi.dll should be loaded by the application or driver that needs it, not registered as a universal Windows component.
Do not expect DirectX or Windows Features to recreate it
Optional Windows components such as legacy DirectPlay can help some old games, but they do not install pmxapi.dll. Enable them only when the application specifically requires them:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select the required component.
- Select OK.
- Restart if prompted.
This is a compatibility step, not a replacement for the KYRO package.
What usually caused the error
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| KYRO driver or application was removed | Reinstall the complete original package |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Verify its path and provenance, then restore only a trusted copy |
| Application folder was moved or partially copied | Restore the original directory or reinstall |
| 32-bit application is using incompatible components | Use the correct x86 application and dependencies |
| A dependency is missing | Identify the dependency and reinstall the complete package |
| Windows has broader corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file came from an untrusted location | Scan it and replace the complete installation |
| Current Windows cannot support the old driver | Use compatibility testing, an older supported Windows environment, or a virtual machine |
When the original KYRO installer is unavailable
If the card is no longer installed and the failing program is obsolete, first determine whether the program still needs a hardware driver component or whether an old shortcut is simply being launched accidentally.
Check:
- The executable path in the shortcut.
- The application’s uninstall entry.
- Old backup or disk-image contents.
- The original card or computer installation media.
- The publisher’s archived support material.
- Whether the application can run in an older Windows virtual machine.
Current Imagination downloads focus on newer PowerVR tools and may not expose the historical KYRO Windows package. Do not substitute a modern PowerVR package for the old driver.
If the error persists after a clean application reinstall, identify the exact executable and the path Windows attempts to load. The failing copy may be bundled with a different program, referenced by an obsolete shortcut, or blocked by another missing dependency.

Is pmxapi.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an old third-party PowerVR KYRO component associated with Imagination Technologies.
Is pmxapi.dll the same as hal.dll?
No. “Hardware Abstraction Layer” is the description associated with pmxapi.dll. It is not Windows hal.dll.
Is pmxapi.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Available public file records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 file. Use the compatible 32-bit application and dependencies. Do not replace it with a supposed 64-bit copy.
Where should pmxapi.dll be located?
It should be beside the legacy driver or application that installed and uses it. The installer determines the correct directory. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64 by default.
Will the latest Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Only if a Microsoft runtime is the actual missing dependency. It will not recreate pmxapi.dll or replace the KYRO driver.
Should I register pmxapi.dll with regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command, and this file should not be registered merely because it is missing.
Can SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally no. They repair protected Windows components, while pmxapi.dll is a third-party graphics component.
What if I no longer have a KYRO graphics card?
The error may come from an old application, bundled component, or obsolete shortcut. Identify the executable first, then reinstall or remove the application. If the program genuinely requires KYRO hardware, an older supported environment may be necessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Provide the full error text, executable name, application directory, Windows version, display adapter model, and the path Windows attempted to load. Also state whether antivirus quarantine, a driver change, cleanup, or moving the application preceded the failure.
