pnrpauto.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ runtime or a file you should download from a random DLL site. Before repairing it, check your Windows release: older installations may need DISM and SFC, while Windows 11 version 24H2 removed the PNRP components that applications may still be trying to load.
What this file actually does
pnrpauto.dll is the PNRP Auto Service Dll, part of Microsoft’s Peer Name Resolution Protocol infrastructure. PNRP was a serverless peer-to-peer name-discovery technology used to find computers, peers, and services without relying entirely on a central DNS server. Microsoft describes its historical purpose in the PNRP documentation.

On Windows versions that included PNRP, the file was historically associated with the PNRPAutoReg service, also called PNRP Machine Name Publication Service, and was normally located at:
%WinDir%System32pnrpauto.dll
It is a Windows component rather than a general-purpose application runtime. A missing-file warning can therefore mean one of several things:

- Windows system files are damaged.
- Security software quarantined the file.
- An old program still expects PNRP.
- The file exists, but one of its dependencies does not.
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or a later release intentionally no longer contains the related PNRP components.
PNRP was already affected by the shutdown of its cloud service in Windows 10 version 1809. Microsoft later documented the removal of the corresponding APIs from Windows 11 version 24H2 and recommends newer discovery technologies such as DNS-SD and mDNS. See Microsoft’s removed-features documentation.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| “pnrpauto.dll is missing from your computer” on an older Windows release | Corruption, incomplete servicing, or quarantine | Check security history, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL itself or a dependency may be missing | Repair Windows and inspect the calling application |
| The error started after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 | PNRP was removed from that release | Update, replace, or isolate the old application |
| Only one old program reports the error | The program may assume that PNRP still exists | Check for a vendor update or supported replacement |
| Antivirus removed the file | A quarantine or detection event may be involved | Verify the file and repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement |
| Copying a DLL changes nothing | A dependency, service, API, or architecture mismatch remains | Undo the manual copy if possible and repair the underlying system |
1. Check your Windows version first
This determines whether restoring the file is even an appropriate goal.
Check through Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Under Windows specifications, read the Version entry.
You can also press Windows + R, type:
winver
Then press Enter.
If the dialog shows Windows 11 version 24H2, do not download an old copy of pnrpauto.dll. The related PNRP APIs and components were removed, so inserting one DLL does not recreate the services and interfaces that an old program may require.
If you are on an older Windows release that historically included PNRP, continue with the repair steps below.
2. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may have removed a file from a trusted Windows installation, but a file with the right name is not automatically safe. Do not restore an unknown copy simply because an application requests it.
Check Microsoft Defender
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pnrpauto.dll. - Expand the event and review its path, detection details, and action.
- If the file was from the normal Windows directory and the Windows installation is trustworthy, follow Defender’s Allow on device or restore option only when you are confident the detection was incorrect.
- Run a full scan afterward.
If the file was found in an application folder, a temporary folder, or another unexpected location, do not restore it automatically. Scan the computer and repair the application from its official installer.
A legitimate Windows DLL should also have a valid Microsoft digital signature. In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab when it is available. A signature check supports the identification, but it does not replace a malware scan.
3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
On a Windows version that should contain PNRP, this is the safest primary repair. DISM repairs the Windows component source first; SFC then checks protected system files and restores damaged copies.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. Persistent source errors may require Windows installation media or a repair reinstall.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, use the same elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application again.
The useful SFC results are:
- Did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact, so investigate the application, dependency, or Windows version.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and rerun SFC. If it still fails, review
%WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.logand move to the repair-install options below.
Repeating SFC without repairing the component source usually does not add useful information. If you want a guided scan that reduces the need to compare DISM and SFC results manually, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair.

4. Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update or incomplete servicing operation can leave the component store inconsistent.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run the DISM and SFC commands again.
- Start the application that produced the error.
If the computer is already on Windows 11 version 24H2, updates will not restore PNRP. In that case, the useful update is an update to the application that is requesting the removed component.
5. Repair or update the application that reports the error
The error does not necessarily mean the entire application is damaged. Windows displays a loader error when the application requests a DLL or dependency that cannot be loaded. An old application may simply be incompatible with the current Windows release.
Identify the caller:
- Note the program name in the error dialog.
- Check the shortcut’s Properties and read the Target path.
- Open Task Manager, select Details, and look for the program while it starts.
- Check the application’s own log or support information for the module name.
- Visit the application developer’s official support page and look for a current build or compatibility notice.
If the program has its own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, when available.
- Select Repair. If that does not work, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
For a traditional desktop program, uninstall it from Installed apps, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s current installer. Reinstalling is useful when the application’s own files are damaged. It cannot restore APIs that Windows 11 24H2 intentionally removed.
A launcher’s Verify files or Repair installation feature is relevant only when the game or application bundles its own files. It does not repair the Windows copy of pnrpauto.dll.

6. Do not copy the DLL or run regsvr32
Do not copy pnrpauto.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The application’s installation folder
System32 and SysWOW64 are architecture-sensitive locations. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains native 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility. Choosing a folder by guesswork can create a worse loader mismatch.
Do not run:
regsvr32 pnrpauto.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command, and it will not recreate removed PNRP APIs or services.
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable for this file. It is not something users should obtain through a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET installer. Safe recovery sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, Windows installation media, and Windows recovery features.

7. Repair Windows without deleting personal files
If DISM and SFC cannot restore a damaged older installation, Windows 11 provides a repair reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every configuration. If it is unavailable, use official Windows installation media or the recovery options described by Microsoft.
If the problem began immediately after a driver, update, or system change and a restore point exists:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings, not personal documents.

PNRP depends on networking support, including IPv6, but a pnrpauto.dll warning is not automatically a network-driver problem. Use Device Manager only if the application also reports network failures or Windows shows a device error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and check the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a guided way to identify stale network drivers instead of checking several adapter entries manually, Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing what it finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required if the adapter is working normally.
Frequently asked questions
Is pnrpauto.dll malware?
No. The name refers to a genuine Microsoft Windows component. However, a file with that name outside normal Windows locations is not automatically legitimate. Check its signature, location, and security scan results.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Older Windows installations historically included the file and the PNRPAutoReg service. Do not assume every Windows release has the same components. Microsoft removed the related PNRP APIs from Windows 11 version 24H2.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the error appear after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2?
An older application may still call PNRP APIs that no longer exist in that release. Restoring only pnrpauto.dll does not restore the removed API surface or services.
Is there an official download for pnrpauto.dll?
There is no standalone Microsoft download or PNRP redistributable that should be used for this file. Use Windows Update, DISM, installation media, or Windows recovery features.
What if the message says “specified module could not be found”?
That wording can mean the named DLL is present but one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Repair Windows, check the application’s architecture and update status, and do not assume that copying the named file will fix it.
Should I install a Visual C++ package?
Not for this Windows component unless the application’s own documentation specifically identifies a separate runtime dependency. pnrpauto.dll is not a Visual C++ redistributable file.
