PNY’s CS2342 is a 1TB or 2TB M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD designed for compact gaming PCs. It fits the original 2023 ASUS ROG Ally and the MSI Claw A1M, and it is physically suited to Steam Deck SSD replacements when the correct shield and clearance are retained. Its rated speeds reach 7,300 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write, but those are manufacturer maximums—not guaranteed handheld results. The dependable upgrade is capacity; loading-time gains are workload-dependent, and the SSD will not raise game FPS by itself.
What the PNY CS2342 is
The CS2342 is a single-board M.2 2230 NVMe drive measuring approximately 22 × 30 × 4 mm. It uses a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface, NVMe 1.4, 3D flash memory, and features including Host Memory Buffer (HMB), LDPC error correction, SMART monitoring, APST/ASPM power management, and TCG Pyrite support. PNY rates it for 0°C–70°C operation and claims a 1.5-million-hour MTBF. Capacity options are 1TB and 2TB.
PNY specifies sequential performance of up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write. These are laboratory-style maximum ratings; PNY says actual performance varies with the host device, firmware, operating system, settings, and applications. PNY lists the Steam Deck, original ROG Ally, and MSI Claw among compatible systems on its product page. iFixit identifies the Deck replacement drive as a single-sided M.2 2230; ASUS identifies the 2023 Ally’s drive as PCIe 4.0 NVMe 2230 and states that its slot does not support SATA SSDs. MSI’s A1M specification lists a 2230 NVMe Gen4 x4 drive.
What “boosts gaming” means in practice
Capacity is the clearest gain
A 1TB or 2TB internal drive leaves room for more large PC games, emulators, shader caches, and—when supported—both SteamOS and Windows 11. It also reduces the need to delete and redownload games.
Loading and file operations may improve
Compared with a slower SSD, the CS2342 may shorten installs, updates, file copies, booting, application launches, and some storage-bound game loads. Game loading often involves many small files and decompression, so peak sequential numbers do not predict a fixed percentage improvement. If the original SSD is already a capable NVMe drive, the difference may be modest.

FPS does not automatically increase
Average frame rate and image quality are governed mainly by the handheld’s CPU, GPU, power mode, thermals, and memory. Replacing the SSD does not turn a Steam Deck or Ally into a faster graphics platform. There is also no verified CS2342-specific independent benchmark establishing a particular FPS, frame-time, battery-life, or loading-time improvement in these handhelds.
Battery life and downloads
Do not buy the drive expecting longer battery life or faster internet downloads. Storage can be the bottleneck during an installation or update, but network speed remains the limit when it is slower than the drive.

Installing it in a Steam Deck
Opening the Deck is a hardware repair, not just a software upgrade. iFixit recommends discharging the battery below 25%, enabling battery storage mode in BIOS, and removing the microSD card before opening the back cover. A card left inserted can be damaged.
- Back up saves, personal files, emulator data, and any Windows partitions.
- Shut down fully, remove the microSD card, discharge the battery below 25%, and enable battery storage mode.
- Remove the rear cover with the correct driver; stop if screws begin to strip.
- Disconnect the battery as directed by the repair guide, remove the original SSD, and transfer its ESD shield to the CS2342.
- Confirm the replacement is single-sided or otherwise within the Deck’s clearance. Do not force the connector, screw, shield, or back cover.
- Choose either cloning or a fresh SteamOS recovery installation.

Fresh SteamOS recovery or cloning?
Fresh recovery
This is the cleaner route when you do not need the old installation. Back up data, install the SSD, download Valve’s current Steam Deck recovery image, create bootable USB media on another computer, boot the Deck from it, and select the appropriate recovery or re-image option. Reinstall games and restore your files afterward.

After re-imaging, the buttons, sticks, or touchpads may be unavailable temporarily. iFixit notes that the touchscreen can be used during setup; install updates, connect to Wi-Fi, and restart to restore normal input.
Cloning
Cloning preserves installed games, desktop tools, emulators, boot settings, and dual-boot partitions. You need an NVMe enclosure or adapter and cloning software that can copy the complete partition layout. Verify the EFI, recovery, SteamOS, and Windows partitions individually. A larger destination may initially show unallocated space that must be expanded after cloning.

Windows 11 considerations
The CS2342 is an NVMe drive and should be detectable by a compatible handheld BIOS. A fresh Windows installation still requires the device’s chipset, graphics, audio, Wi-Fi, controller, firmware, and vendor utility packages. Create a Windows recovery USB before opening the handheld.

For a clone, preserve the EFI system and recovery partitions. Windows activation may rely on the handheld’s embedded digital license. Dual-boot users should back up both operating systems and keep recovery media available; a SteamOS-only backup will not repair a damaged Windows bootloader.
Installation risks and failure recovery
- Drive not detected: power down, reseat the SSD, check the screw and connector, and confirm the drive is NVMe rather than SATA.
- SteamOS will not boot: use Valve recovery media or reinstall the original drive while diagnosing the clone.
- Windows fails after cloning: verify that EFI and recovery partitions were copied, then repair the EFI bootloader from Windows recovery tools.
- Input is missing after re-imaging: use the touchscreen, install updates, and restart.
- Shield or back cover will not fit: stop; verify drive thickness, single-sided clearance, and shield placement rather than forcing the enclosure.
- Damaged screw, battery, or cable: stop and consider professional repair.
M.2 2230 describes physical dimensions, not universal electrical or firmware compatibility. Opening a handheld can also affect warranty treatment depending on the region and manufacturer.

Before-you-buy checklist
- Identify the exact handheld model, not merely the product family.
- Confirm it accepts a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe drive and not SATA or 2280 only.
- Choose 1TB for a moderate single-OS library or 2TB for large libraries and dual booting.
- Check live price, stock, regional warranty, and TBW terms.
- Prepare backups, recovery media, the correct screwdriver, and an NVMe enclosure if cloning.
- Expect capacity benefits first; treat performance gains as workload-dependent.
Verdict
The PNY CS2342 is a credible high-capacity upgrade for the original ROG Ally, MSI Claw A1M, and compatible Steam Deck replacements. It is worth considering when you need 1TB or 2TB of internal NVMe storage and its price, warranty, and physical clearance make sense. It is not a justified purchase solely for higher FPS, and its 7,300/6,000 MB/s ratings should not be mistaken for guaranteed handheld game performance. Confirm the exact model—especially ROG Ally X and newer Claw variants—before ordering.
