1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can record your first podcast with a phone or computer you already own. If you decide to upgrade, an external microphone is a sensible first purchase; headphones can help you monitor a recording but are not a universal requirement. Choose equipment for the show you plan to make—not for a hypothetical studio.
Start with what you have
YouTube’s creator equipment guidance recommends matching equipment to your goals and notes that useful gear may already be on hand. For a first audio-only episode, try your phone or computer in a quiet space, make a short test recording, and listen back before you publish. This gives you a chance to identify a real limitation before spending money.
A simple solo recording does not require a complete studio. The right setup can change if you add in-person co-hosts, remote guests, or video, so make those decisions when they become part of your format.
What equipment should a beginner consider?

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
External microphone
If your built-in microphone does not give you the voice sound you want, consider an external microphone as your first upgrade. YouTube includes external microphones among common creator hardware, but its guidance is not a podcast microphone comparison and does not establish a best model. Choose based on your recording arrangement and budget rather than treating any particular microphone type or product as essential.
Headphones
Headphones can help you monitor a recording or notice problems during a conversation. YouTube includes headphones in general streaming equipment guidance; that does not make them mandatory for every podcast. Try your current setup first and add monitoring gear if it addresses a need in your workflow.

Choose the setup for your show
| Show format | Practical starting point | What may change as you grow |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, audio-only | Phone or computer; record a test and listen back. | An external microphone may be worth considering if the built-in mic is not meeting your needs. |
| Several people in one room | Plan around the number of speakers and how they will be recorded. | Additional microphones or other equipment may be relevant. YouTube’s guidance on professional live streams mentions multiple microphones and mixers, but it is not a beginner podcast shopping list: YouTube live-stream encoder guidance. |
| Remote conversation | Consider how you and your guest will record and monitor the conversation. | Headphones or additional recording equipment may help depending on the arrangement; the reviewed guidance does not specify a required setup. |
| Video podcast | Decide separately what you need for the audio and the picture. | A camera or lighting may become relevant, but YouTube’s general equipment guide does not prescribe a single setup. |
This is a planning framework, not a tested ranking of equipment. Room, portability, speaker count, and format affect what is useful; buy only when you can identify a limitation your current setup does not solve.
Publishing a podcast on YouTube
YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist of full episodes, with each episode represented by a video. An MP3 by itself cannot be made into a YouTube podcast. You can upload episodes in YouTube Studio or, where available, connect an RSS feed; some podcast hosting platforms provide distribution, and third-party tools may also be used. Check current feature availability and eligibility before choosing a publishing route.

- Prepare each episode as a video for YouTube; audio alone in MP3 format is not a YouTube podcast episode.
- Create or manage the podcast in YouTube Studio, or check whether RSS-feed connection is available for your account and region. See YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.
- If you use a podcast host or third-party tool to distribute episodes, confirm what it supports for YouTube. YouTube describes distribution options in its podcast distribution guidance.
- For the podcast thumbnail, YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026 recommends a square image at 1280 × 1280 pixels. This is a platform specification, not an audio-equipment requirement: YouTube podcast setup guidance.
When to spend money
- Start with the device you already own and make a short test recording.
- Listen for a specific problem before shopping; an external microphone is a reasonable first upgrade to consider if the built-in mic is not giving you the result you want.
- Add headphones if monitoring would help your recording process, not because every podcast requires them.
- Reassess equipment when your format changes—for example, when you add co-hosts, remote guests, or video.
The available official guidance does not compare microphone models, establish a single best setup, or provide a quantified performance ranking. Treat those choices as dependent on your show and workflow.

If your podcast workflow also includes looping uploaded video as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option for that job—not a podcast recording tool. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
