Podcast Interview Questions: Ideas for Your Next Episode

Build a flexible interview outline with guest-specific questions that invite stories, decisions, and useful reflection—not stock answers.

Good podcast interview questions give a guest room to tell a specific story, explain a decision, or rethink an assumption—not just confirm what the host already believes. Start with what listeners should take away, research what the guest has said before, then prepare a flexible set of concise prompts and follow-ups. The questions below can be adapted to interviews about games, game development, esports, or any other subject.

How to prepare questions for your next podcast interview

1. Decide what the episode should deliver

Write one sentence describing what a listener should understand, feel, or be able to do after the episode. A clear promise gives the conversation direction and helps you distinguish useful questions from interesting-but-unrelated ones. Illinois’s SIIP and Share guide recommends deciding on the specific story or insight you want to uncover before drafting questions.

For example, an episode about a game’s difficult launch could aim to explain how the team responded to player feedback. That is more focused than a broad promise to “talk about the game.”

2. Research the guest before drafting

Review the guest’s biography, public work, and previous interviews. Spotify for Creators advises hosts to demonstrate familiarity with the guest’s work and use prior interviews to prepare rather than repeat questions they have answered many times.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Note a specific claim or idea you want the guest to explain.
  • Find a decision, turning point, or underexplored part of their story.
  • Identify what your listeners are likely to want clarified.
  • Separate details you can verify from questions that invite the guest’s perspective.

For a game developer, that might mean reviewing a postmortem or past launch interview and asking what changed after a particular choice—not asking for a general account of how the game was made.

3. Arrange questions into a story arc

A useful outline moves from accessible context to the episode’s central issue, then into tension, choices, consequences, and reflection. Illinois’s guide suggests considering the issue, where the heat or conflict lies, and what may happen next. The order should help a listener follow the story, not force the guest through a rigid script.

4. Write concise anchor prompts

Give each question one main idea. Ask for an example, a process, a decision, or a turning point. Avoid wording that contains the answer or assumes what the guest felt. Instead of “You must have been frustrated when the launch went badly, right?”, try “What was most difficult about the launch, and how did you respond?”

5. Prepare follow-up cues, not a second questionnaire

Keep a few short prompts nearby: “What happened next?”, “Can you give me an example?”, “What made that difficult?”, and “What changed your mind?” Use them when a detail deserves more attention; you do not need to ask every follow-up on every episode.

6. Let the conversation change the outline

Listen to the answer, let the guest finish, and follow a revealing thread when it serves the listener. Return to the outline if the discussion drifts away from the episode’s purpose. Spotify for Creators quotes interviewer Greg Bresnitz describing himself as an audience stand-in: if an answer piques his interest, he follows up to get the full thought. That is a useful cue to stay curious rather than race to the next prepared question.

7. Close with reflection and a useful next step

Leave room for the guest to say what they hope listeners remember, raise something important you missed, and point listeners toward their work. These closing prompts work best after the main story has had space to develop.

How many questions should you prepare for a 30-minute interview?

There is no universal count. For a 30-minute interview, Descript’s 2026 guide suggests preparing five to eight main questions, while Riverside’s 2026 guide suggests six to ten open-ended questions. These are vendor recommendations, not research-backed thresholds or a rule about how many questions you must ask.

Prepare enough anchor questions to cover the episode’s promised arc, then leave time for follow-ups and answers that take longer than expected. A guest who tells detailed stories may need fewer prompts; a concise guest or a tightly scoped episode may allow more. Treat the list as a pacing aid, not a target to complete.

Podcast interview questions to adapt for your guest

Use these as starting points, then add the guest’s specific project, work, or experience. They are editorial prompts, not a substitute for guest research.

Opening and context

  • What were you focused on just before this story began?
  • What is the first moment that helps explain how you got here?
  • What do people often misunderstand about your work or experience?
  • How would you explain the central problem to someone encountering it for the first time?

Decisions and turning points

  • What happened that changed the direction of your work?
  • What options did you consider at the time?
  • What made you choose that path, and what did you give up by choosing it?
  • Was there a moment when you realized your original plan was not working?

Process and evidence

  • Can you walk us through a specific example?
  • What did you try first, and what did you learn from the result?
  • What evidence changed your mind?
  • What part of the process is less visible from the outside?

Obstacles, conflict, and lessons

  • What was the hardest part that people may not have seen?
  • What did you misunderstand at the beginning?
  • What advice sounds good in theory but fails in practice?
  • What would you do differently if you faced the same situation again?

Reflection and closing

  • What belief have you changed your mind about, and what led to that change?
  • What do you hope people take away from this conversation?
  • What question do you wish more interviewers asked you?
  • Is there anything important I did not ask about?
  • Where can listeners learn more about your work?

How to make a question more open and specific

A closed question can be useful for confirming a simple fact, but a run of yes-or-no prompts rarely gives a guest much room to explain. A guest-specific, open-ended prompt asks about a choice or moment while leaving the answer genuinely open.

Less useful starting point Stronger direction Why it helps
“Did the team expect the game to become popular?” “When did you first notice players responding in a way you had not expected?” Invites a moment and an explanation rather than a yes or no.
“Was the schedule stressful?” “What part of the schedule put the most pressure on the team?” Does not supply the guest’s feeling or conclusion.
“You changed the design because players hated it, right?” “What feedback influenced the design, and how did you decide what to change?” Avoids assuming the reason and asks about the decision process.
“Tell us about your career.” “Which early decision most changed the work you do now?” Narrows a broad biography into a story listeners can follow.

Spotify for Creators highlights the risk of questions that answer themselves or presume a guest’s feelings. An open prompt should create room for an answer you did not predict; it should not be a leading question with a question mark at the end.

Common question-planning mistakes

  • Using generic prompts without doing guest research. “How did you get started?” may be fine as an opening, but it becomes more useful when tailored to a specific, relevant moment in the guest’s work.
  • Stacking several questions together. Ask one thing at a time so the guest can answer clearly and you can follow the most useful part.
  • Putting an assumption into the question. Avoid telling guests what they felt, what caused a decision, or what lesson they learned. Ask what happened and let them describe it.
  • Reading every prompt in order. A prepared sequence can support the conversation, but it should not prevent a timely follow-up or a worthwhile change of direction.
  • Confusing question count with episode quality. The number of prompts is a planning aid; the listener’s need and the guest’s answers should determine the pace.

Optional tools for preparing questions

Podcastools describes a free, profession-aware question generator and advises users to review its suggestions. Treat generated questions as raw material: check for assumptions, remove generic prompts, and tailor the remaining ideas to the guest and episode promise. Riverside’s planning template and Descript’s recording, editing, and transcription guidance relate to adjacent production tasks; neither is necessary to develop a strong question list.

After the interview: keep a recorded episode playing on YouTube

If you also want to use a finished, uploaded podcast recording as part of a continuous YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate option for that distribution task. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not conduct interviews or stream a live camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across your active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The same plan supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
