The reported feat was a boss victory—not proof that the fish played through or completed the entire expansion. Reports say custom software tracked Tortellini’s movement in its tank and mapped it to game actions, while PointCrow prepared the character for the fight.
What did Tortellini beat?
Tortellini’s reported victory was against Promised Consort Radahn, the final boss of Shadow of the Erdtree. GameSpot and NME covered the event, including GameSpot’s stream-title wording: “Can My Goldfish Beat The Hardest Elden Ring DLC Boss.” That headline-style question captures the stunt, but the documented result is narrower than “beat the DLC”: the reports describe a win over the final boss, not a verified playthrough of the full expansion.
Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion to Elden Ring, rather than a standalone game. Bandai Namco says the base game is required to play the DLC; its product page lists a Shadow of the Erdtree Edition that bundles the base game and expansion.
How did a goldfish control Elden Ring?
According to the reports, a camera and custom software tracked Tortellini’s position or movement in the tank and translated it into game inputs. GameSpot describes a machine-learning algorithm tracking the fish; NME describes a camera and computer overlay. The accounts establish the broad idea—movement mapped to controls—but do not identify a verified camera model, commercially available kit, or precise input mapping.

What preparation went into the boss fight?
NME reports that PointCrow prepared the character with a build and buffs before the encounter. So the stunt was not a case of Tortellini independently choosing equipment, setting up a character, or entering the fight without preparation. The reports do not establish every intervention during the run, whether the footage was edited, or how much of the expansion the fish played.

Bandai Namco announced Shadow of the Erdtree for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, with a release date of June 21, 2024. Its official announcement called it “the long-awaited ELDEN RING expansion.” The publisher describes new weapons, equipment, weapon skills and magic, alongside new enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines.
Bandai Namco and FromSoftware reported that the expansion sold over 5 million units worldwide within three days of its June 21, 2024 release. That is a historical launch-period figure, not a current sales total. The publisher’s game page also lists an August 27, 2026 update notice covering support for the Tarnished Pack DLC and gameplay balance adjustments.
