Heatran is an optional postgame encounter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Complete Buck’s Magma Stone event at Stark Mountain, speak with Buck in the Survival Area to return the stone, then go back to Stark Mountain’s deepest room to encounter Heatran.
What you need to do first
Heatran becomes available as part of the games’ post-Hall-of-Fame content. The Pokémon Company’s Trainers Guide explains that additional areas, quests, and Pokémon open up after you enter the Hall of Fame. To get started with this post-story content, bring Professor Rowan a completed Sinnoh Pokédex: for his check, you need to have seen the 150 initially available Sinnoh Pokémon, not caught all of them. See the official Sinnoh Pokédex guide for that requirement.

Complete Buck’s Magma Stone event
- Travel to Stark Mountain. It is in the Battle Zone, reached through the Route 227 area.
- Explore the mountain with Buck. Follow the path through Stark Mountain to its deepest area. Buck takes the Magma Stone there as part of the event.
- Go to the Survival Area and speak with Buck. After the conversation with the older man there, Buck returns the Magma Stone. The quest walkthrough from Gamer Guides details this sequence.
Return to Heatran’s room
Once the Magma Stone has been returned, go back to the deepest part of Stark Mountain. Heatran will be waiting there for the encounter. Game8’s postgame guide also identifies Stark Mountain as Heatran’s encounter location.
Why Heatran is a postgame encounter
The Pokémon Company lists Heatran among the Legendary Pokémon encountered after entering the Hall of Fame in its Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl story guide. That guide describes Heatran as living in volcanic caves; the specific Magma Stone steps and return trip are covered by the walkthroughs above.
