After stopping Cyrus at Spear Pillar, you can visit the three lakes to encounter the Lake Guardians: Uxie at Lake Acuity, Mesprit at Lake Verity, and Azelf at Lake Valor. Uxie and Azelf wait in their caverns for a battle; Mesprit flees from Verity Cavern and begins roaming Sinnoh. All three encounters are level 50.
When the Lake Guardians become available
First complete the Spear Pillar story confrontation and stop Cyrus’s plan involving Dialga or Palkia. After that event, return to the lakes to find the three Pokémon.

Prepare before you approach
Bring a party ready for level-50 battles, Poké Balls, and healing items. For a safer capture attempt, weaken the target without knocking it out, then use sleep or paralysis if you can. The official Pokémon battling guide recommends False Swipe to reduce the risk of accidentally fainting a weakened Pokémon. Low HP or a status condition improves your opportunity, but neither guarantees that a Poké Ball will work; bring enough for repeated attempts.
How to catch Uxie
- Go to Lake Acuity and use Surf to reach the central Acuity Cavern.
- Save your game before approaching Uxie so you can retry if the encounter goes badly.
- Approach Uxie to begin the level-50 battle, weaken it carefully, and throw Poké Balls.
How to encounter and catch Mesprit
- Go to Lake Verity and enter the central Verity Cavern.
- Approach Mesprit. The initial interaction records it in your Pokédex, but it then flees rather than staying for a conventional cavern battle.
- Look for Mesprit as it roams Sinnoh. The game guide describes it changing routes as you do; flying sends it to a different location, so account for that when trying to meet it again.
- When you encounter it, use a plan to prevent escape if your party has an appropriate move, then weaken it and attempt capture. Mean Look is one example mentioned by the guide, not a guaranteed way to catch Mesprit.
How to catch Azelf
- Go to Lake Valor and use Surf to reach the central Valor Cavern.
- Save before approaching Azelf.
- Start the level-50 battle, weaken Azelf without fainting it, and throw Poké Balls.
What the first Mesprit encounter means for your Pokédex
You do not have to catch Mesprit during its first interaction to record its Pokédex entry. The official Trainers Guide says that seeing all 150 Pokémon initially findable in Sinnoh is enough to unlock end-game content and the National Pokédex; catching every one is not required for that seeing milestone.
