Galar’s three starter evolution lines are Grookey → Thwackey → Rillaboom, Scorbunny → Raboot → Cinderace, and Sobble → Drizzile → Inteleon. Ranked by how well each line develops its visual concept, personality, and battle identity, Rillaboom’s line takes first place, Cinderace’s comes second, and Inteleon’s third. That order is an editorial judgment—not an official Pokémon ranking.
All Galar starter evolutions at a glance
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield introduce Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble as Galar’s first partners. Each evolves through three stages. The official Galar first-partner roster shows the complete lines.
| Starter line | Final form | Final form’s type | Standard ability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grookey → Thwackey → Rillaboom | Rillaboom | Grass | Overgrow |
| Scorbunny → Raboot → Cinderace | Cinderace | Fire | Blaze |
| Sobble → Drizzile → Inteleon | Inteleon | Water | Torrent |
The types and standard abilities above are listed on the official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield species pages; the species’ Pokédex numbers are listed in the official Pokédex as Grookey 810, Thwackey 811, Rillaboom 812, Scorbunny 813, Raboot 814, Cinderace 815, Sobble 816, Drizzile 817, and Inteleon 818.
How the ranking works
This ranking weighs each line as a complete three-stage design rather than judging only its final form. The main considerations are whether the concept grows clearly from one stage to the next, how cohesive the visual theme and personality feel, and whether the final form has a distinct battle identity. Type matchups are not used as a measure of design quality, and preferences about art are subjective.

1. Grookey → Thwackey → Rillaboom
Why it ranks first
Grookey’s mischievous, curious character gives the line a lively starting point; its transformation into a drummer feels like a natural extension rather than a sudden change of theme. Thwackey develops the rhythm-making idea, and Rillaboom makes it the center of its identity with a stump drum, powerful sound waves, and roots it can control around the stump. The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield official species descriptions support that drumming-and-plants motif.
Rillaboom also has a strong silhouette and an immediately legible role: a powerful Grass-type performer whose instrument is part of its body and abilities. Of the three lines, this one makes the clearest progression from starter personality to final-form concept. Rillaboom’s Grass type and standard Overgrow ability give its battle identity a straightforward match to its plant-focused design.

What may not work for everyone
The line commits heavily to a single performance theme, so its appeal depends on enjoying the drummer concept. That specificity is a strength for coherence, but less appealing if you prefer a more unusual or reserved character.
2. Scorbunny → Raboot → Cinderace
Why it ranks second
Scorbunny begins as an energetic Rabbit Pokémon associated with running and jumping. Raboot’s athletic, focused look bridges that energy to Cinderace, whose kicking ability and flaming soccer ball complete a football-striker concept. The official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield descriptions establish those traits.

The line is easy to read and has a strong final-form identity: Cinderace looks and acts like a player who turns speed and ball control into attacks. Its Fire type and standard Blaze ability provide a familiar battle foundation. It sits behind Rillaboom because the football theme can feel more like a costume or sports role layered onto a Pokémon, while Grookey’s drumming is more deeply integrated with its final form.
What may not work for everyone
Raboot’s withdrawn, hoodie-like appearance is a noticeable mood shift from Scorbunny’s exuberance. It can read as a convincing adolescent phase, but it makes the line’s emotional progression less seamless than the top-ranked line’s development.

3. Sobble → Drizzile → Inteleon
Why it ranks third
Sobble’s anxious, easily startled personality contrasts sharply with the poised secret-agent persona of Inteleon. Drizzile’s withdrawn look helps make that evolution feel like a character arc, but the line’s final transformation is more abrupt than the other two. Inteleon is a Water-type Secret Agent Pokémon: its official description emphasizes compressed-water shots, concealed tools, and deliberate, strategic behavior on the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield species page.
That spy-film identity is distinctive, and its tactical approach gives Inteleon a clear battle character. It ranks third because the sleek, human-like agent design is a sharper departure from Sobble’s small, vulnerable look than the other lines’ changes from starter to final form. For players who like secret-agent styling or prefer Inteleon’s more controlled personality, that contrast may be exactly the point.

What may not work for everyone
Inteleon’s long, angular proportions and composed pose are a marked departure from Sobble’s rounded design. Whether that feels like satisfying character development or a disconnect is a matter of taste.
Which Galar starter evolution is best?
For the strongest concept carried through all three stages, Grookey’s line is the best overall pick here: its movement from curious starter to drummer Pokémon is cohesive, and Rillaboom’s instrument is central to its identity. Choose Scorbunny if the energetic football-striker idea appeals most, or Sobble if you prefer a secret-agent character and a more dramatic change in temperament. Pokémon does not designate an official winner; the ranking reflects these design and identity criteria.
