Add downloadable content (DLC) only if you want its extra content, and do not assume a special accessory is essential.
Should you buy Pokémon Scarlet or Violet?
Scarlet and Violet are separate editions of the Paldea adventure. Nintendo associates Koraidon with Scarlet and Miraidon with Violet; its official Scarlet listing describes exploring a wide-open world and traveling by riding the version’s Legendary Pokémon. The Violet listing is the corresponding edition page.
Choose by version preference and who you play with
- Choose Scarlet if Koraidon is your preference.
- Choose Violet if Miraidon is your preference.
- Coordinate with friends if version differences, trading, or shared play are part of your decision. Check the game’s current details for the specific play mode you plan to use.
The official listings establish the edition distinction, but they do not establish a categorical gameplay-value winner. If you have no version preference and no friends’ choices to coordinate with, compare the live price and exact contents of each purchase option in your region.
Is a double pack or game-and-DLC bundle worth buying?
Nintendo lists the games individually, as a double pack, and in bundles with DLC. Those formats make it possible to buy one edition, both editions, or a game with its add-on, but a bundle is not automatically the best deal. Compare its current local price with the separate items and confirm exactly which game and add-on it includes.

The U.S. Nintendo store prices are regional, commercial listings that can change; they are not a reliable price comparison for every country. Check the live listing or retailer price where you intend to buy. Nintendo’s Scarlet and Violet double pack listing is one official format to compare.
Do you need The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC?
No—not simply to own the base game. The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is the named add-on for Scarlet and Violet. Nintendo’s listing describes the DLC and identifies a New Uniform Set bonus, but that bonus alone does not make it worthwhile for every player. Review the live price and included content for the edition you own, then buy it if those additions are appealing to you.

What accessories do you actually need?
The official store page does not identify a Pokémon-specific accessory every buyer needs. It gives a general notice that software compatibility and play experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be required and sold separately. Whether you need anything extra therefore depends on your console and how you intend to play; do not treat a controller, carrying case, or other product as a universal requirement.

Are Sword and Shield Expansion Passes interchangeable?
No. Each Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass works only with its matching base game. If you own Sword, choose the Sword Expansion Pass; if you own Shield, choose the Shield Expansion Pass. Check the game name carefully before purchasing.
Is Legends: Arceus a better fit for your play style?
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a distinct alternative, not another Scarlet/Violet edition. Nintendo describes it as blending action and exploration with the series’ RPG roots; its Hisui setting centers on exploration and survey missions. If those activities are the main draw, consider Legends: Arceus rather than choosing between Paldea editions by default.

Should you use Pokémon HOME to manage your collection?
Pokémon HOME can connect compatible games and help manage Pokémon across supported software. Nintendo Support lists Scarlet, Violet, Sword, Shield, Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl among the supported Switch games. Nintendo also says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use HOME.
Compatibility does not mean every Pokémon can move freely between every game. Check the current Nintendo Support Pokémon HOME FAQ for supported software and transfer limits before buying a game mainly to move Pokémon into or out of it.

- Pick Scarlet for Koraidon or Violet for Miraidon; ask friends which version they have if coordination matters.
- Compare individual-game, double-pack, and game-plus-DLC prices and contents in your region.
- Buy The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero only if its add-on content is something you want.
- Match a Sword or Shield Expansion Pass to the exact base game.
- Choose Legends: Arceus if exploration and survey missions suit you better.
- Check your console setup before buying accessories, and verify HOME compatibility and transfer restrictions before relying on a transfer plan.
