Niantic says some Pokémon do not have an available Shiny variant, and others can be encountered Shiny only during specific events. The most reliable way to check what is available is to read the current event announcement; your Shiny Pokédex shows registered forms, not a live schedule.
Why a complete current list can’t be confirmed
“Has a Shiny variant” and “can be caught right now” are different things. A Shiny form may have been released but only be obtainable during a limited event, through a particular encounter type, or at a specific location. Niantic’s Help Center does not provide one consolidated species-and-form list, and the available community-maintained reference is not enough to verify every entry or its availability on October 8, 2026.

Availability also depends on the form and encounter: a species’ standard form, regional form, costume, or other special form may not share the same Shiny status or access conditions. A different regional appearance is not itself proof that a Pokémon is Shiny. Look for the Shiny icon above the CP during an encounter.
2026 examples—and what they establish
These dated announcements illustrate why a single list can go stale. They are examples, not a complete inventory.

How to check your own Shiny collection
- Filter your Pokémon inventory: open the Pokémon inventory and search
shiny. Niantic’s help instructions say this filters to Pokémon you have caught that are Shiny. - Check the Shiny Pokédex: open the Pokédex and select its Shiny category to see which forms you have registered. A species can be unregistered in that category even if you have caught its standard form.
- Check current encounter availability: consult the official announcement for the active event and its dates, encounter methods, and any location conditions. The Shiny Pokédex records registration; it is not a live encounter schedule.
Some Pokémon are not Shiny-eligible all the time
Niantic says not every Pokémon in the game has a Shiny variant. It specifically notes that Smeargle, Unown, and Meltan cannot be encountered Shiny outside specific events. That is an event restriction, not a guarantee that any of them is available during a particular event; check the event announcement for the current conditions.
Niantic describes Shiny Pokémon as rare variants with different coloring from other Pokémon of the same species. Possible encounter sources include wild Pokémon, raids, Special Research, Field Research rewards, and other rewards. Community Days and Pokémon GO Fest are examples of events that may feature Shiny encounters, but an event’s announcement determines which Pokémon and methods are included.

What a reliable availability check should include
- Exact species and form: distinguish regional and special forms rather than treating every version as interchangeable.
- Shiny release status: confirm that the Shiny variant has been released; a species appearing in the game does not prove this.
- Encounter method: check whether the announcement names wild encounters, raids, eggs, research, or another reward.
- Restrictions and dates: note event start and end times, local-time wording, claim deadlines, and location limits.
No authoritative global Shiny rate or verified count of all forms catchable on October 8, 2026, is established here. Treat any purported complete list as a discovery aid unless it specifies the form, encounter method, restrictions, and date checked—and verify time-sensitive claims against Niantic’s current event notices.
