Primal Groudon and Mega Garchomp are strong Ground-counter examples; a well-prepared duo may be enough, but the outcome depends on the team and battle conditions. The raid dates confirmed by the cited official announcements are historical, so check the live in-game schedule before planning a raid.
Best Pokémon to counter Tapu Koko
Tapu Koko is weak to Ground and Poison attacks. Pokémon GO Hub recommends both types, while PokéBase names these Ground attackers as strong options:

- Primal Groudon: Mud Shot and Precipice Blades.
- Mega Garchomp: Mud Shot and Earth Power.
These are examples, not a universal best team: what works best depends on which Pokémon and moves you have, as well as whether you need more damage or staying power. Counter rankings can also shift with game balance and team conditions. See the Pokémon GO Hub Tapu Koko Raid Counters Guide and PokéBase’s Tapu Koko Raid Guide for the cited recommendations.
Use the boss’s moves to plan your team
PokéBase lists Volt Switch and Quick Attack as possible fast moves, and Thunderbolt, Dazzling Gleam, Brave Bird, and Thunder as possible charged moves. Consider the damage your team may take when choosing counters; the cited guides do not establish one roster that is best against every moveset.

Raid battle tactics
Niantic advises choosing attacks that are super effective against the raid boss and says dodging charged attacks can reduce the damage your Pokémon take. It also recommends using Mega-Evolved Pokémon for bonuses. If your team faints, you can rejoin without using another pass as long as the raid timer has not expired. Read Niantic’s raid boss help article.
How many players do you need?
Pokémon GO Hub’s guide, published April 21, 2026, estimates that two well-prepared trainers can defeat Tapu Koko and recommends bringing four to six counters otherwise. Treat the duo as a planning estimate, not a guarantee: preparation and battle conditions affect the result. The guide does not establish that any particular number of trainers will win regardless of their teams.

Can Tapu Koko be shiny?
Yes. Niantic announced Shiny Tapu Koko’s first Pokémon GO availability for the Crackling Voltage event. The announcement placed Tapu Koko in five-star raids from January 25 to February 1, 2023, in local time, within an event running January 27 to February 5. Those dates describe a past event, not current raid availability. The announcement does not give a shiny encounter rate. See Niantic’s Crackling Voltage announcement.

Does Tapu Koko know Nature’s Madness?
That move was specified for Tapu Koko caught during the Into the Wild event on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Niantic’s announcement says those catches would know the Charged Attack Nature’s Madness; it does not establish that Tapu Koko caught in every raid has the move. Check the event details when deciding whether a current appearance includes it: Niantic’s Into the Wild 2025 announcement.

The cited official announcements confirm past appearances, not Tapu Koko’s availability on October 8, 2026. Its five-star raid debut was scheduled for March 1–15, 2022, and the later announcements describe the 2023 and 2025 events. Raid lineups change, so check the live in-game raid listing or a current official Pokémon GO event announcement before making plans.
