To collect Vivillon in Pokémon GO, save and pin postcards from different locations, then use the Vivillon Collector medal to earn Scatterbug encounters. Each encounter is tied to the postcard region that advanced its medal; evolve Scatterbug to get that region’s Vivillon pattern. The in-game Vivillon map in the Pokédex or medal page is the best guide to which pattern a postcard location represents.

How the Pokémon GO Vivillon map works

Vivillon has different wing patterns associated with the climates of its habitats. Pokémon GO recognizes 18 patterns. Pinning an eligible postcard advances the Vivillon Collector sub-medal for the postcard’s region; completing that medal progress gives an encounter with a Scatterbug associated with that region.

Niantic says players can check the Vivillon Map from either the Pokédex or the Vivillon Collector medal page to see where different Vivillon can be found. Use that in-game map to check a particular postcard location. Broad country names are useful examples, but they are not precise border definitions: a country or territory should not be assumed to correspond to one pattern everywhere.

  • Marine
  • Meadow

Examples from a Pokémon GO Hub guide dated August 27, 2026 include Japan for Elegant, the United Kingdom and Ireland for Garden, Hawaii for Ocean, Egypt for River, and the Middle East for Sandstorm. These are examples rather than official, exhaustive habitat boundaries. Check the location on the in-game map before relying on a postcard for a specific pattern. How to get Scatterbug from postcards

  1. Save the postcard before opening the gift. From a friend’s unopened gift, pin the postcard before opening it; once the gift is opened, you can no longer save its postcard from that gift. For a gift you collected at a PokéStop or Gym, save the postcard from the gift in your Item Bag before sending it.
  2. Pin postcards from the region you want. Eligible postcards advance that region’s Vivillon Collector medal progress. Some locations are not part of a Vivillon habitat and will not advance a medal.
  3. Complete the region’s medal progress and claim the encounter. The completed progress provides a Scatterbug encounter associated with that postcard region. If you run away, return to that region’s medal page to restart the encounter.
  4. Evolve the Scatterbug. It takes 25 Scatterbug Candy to evolve Scatterbug into Spewpa, then 100 Scatterbug Candy to evolve Spewpa into Vivillon. The resulting Vivillon pattern matches the region associated with the postcards that led to the encounter.
  5. Check your progress. Open the Vivillon Collector medal from your Trainer Profile, or view Vivillon in the Pokédex. The medal detail page includes the habitat map.

Postcard storage and limits

The Help Center lists the default Postcard Book capacity as 350 postcards. If it is full, remove saved postcards to make room. Official guidance differs on the daily limit for progress from pinning your own postcards, so do not rely on a fixed cap: check the current game for the limit that applies to your account.

Pokémon GO Hub also reports that additional pins from a region do not count toward the next encounter while an encounter from that region remains unclaimed. That detail is reported by the guide rather than confirmed in the reviewed Help Center guidance. Pokémon GO Hub’s Vivillon regional patterns guide

Is a Nintendo Switch required?

No. Pokémon GO’s postcard and medal system is enough to collect Vivillon patterns in Pokémon GO. The Help Center also describes an optional feature that sends a postcard copy to Nintendo Switch and mentions benefits in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as well as Pokémon GO; it is not a prerequisite for collecting the patterns in Pokémon GO.

Is shiny Vivillon boosted now?

Shiny Scatterbug, Spewpa, and Vivillon debuted during a Pokémon GO event in February 2025. The event coverage described an increased shiny chance during that event, which was time-limited; it does not establish that the boost is active now. Pokémon GO event announcement
