To catch an Alpha Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, try a concealed back strike first: crouch through tall grass, use a Stealth Spray or Smoke Bomb if needed, circle behind it, and throw a Poké Ball at its back. A back strike improves the chance of capture, but does not guarantee it. If you cannot approach safely or the throw fails, battle the Alpha and weaken it before trying again.
Recognize an Alpha and its threat
Alphas are larger than ordinary Pokémon and have glowing red eyes. They are tough opponents, and an Alpha that notices you may pursue and attack. Watch its behavior and the nearby terrain before approaching; different wild Pokémon respond differently to the player. Nintendo’s gameplay guide describes these identifying traits and the risk of being spotted.
Try a stealth catch
- Find cover and watch the Alpha. Tall grass gives you a place to crouch and approach while concealed. Check for obstacles and a route that lets you get behind the target.
- Improve your concealment if needed. Stealth Sprays and Smoke Bombs can help you approach unseen. A Smoke Bomb creates a cloud that reduces visibility, which is especially useful when there are few rocks or other obstacles for cover. Nintendo outlines these tools in its guide to catching Pokémon.
- Circle behind the Alpha and throw. A Poké Ball that hits a Pokémon in the back is a back strike. Nintendo says this gives you a higher chance of a successful catch, not a certain one.
- Choose a ball suited to your distance. Heavy Balls are powerful but have short range, so you need to get close to use one effectively. The official guide does not give comparative catch odds for different ball types.
If stealth fails, weaken the Alpha in battle
If the Alpha spots you, you cannot get behind it, or a concealed throw does not work, switch to a battle. Wild Pokémon are easier to catch after being weakened in battle, according to Nintendo’s gameplay guide. The guidance does not specify a particular HP threshold or status effect for catching an Alpha, so there is no official fixed weakening target to follow.
Choose between stealth and battle
| Approach | What it offers | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth and back strike | Lets you attempt a catch without starting a battle; a back strike improves the chance of success. | You must approach and get behind the Alpha without being noticed, and capture is not guaranteed. |
| Battle first | Weakening the Pokémon makes it easier to catch. | You must confront the Alpha, which can pursue and attack if it notices you. |
Nintendo’s official guidance does not quantify Alpha catch odds for either approach. Treat stealth as a useful first attempt when you have cover and a safe route; battle is the practical alternative when you cannot set up that throw.
