Evolution Stones and other evolution items trigger specific Pokémon evolutions; Mega Stones instead let compatible Pokémon Mega Evolve temporarily in battle. Their sources differ, too: the Stone Emporium sells evolution items and some Mega Stones, Quasartico Inc. trades Mega Stones for Mega Shards, and Rogue Mega battles can reward Mega Stones. This guide separates the two systems and explains how to track down the items, including the postgame and Mega Dimension routes covered by current item references.
Evolution items and Mega Stones do different jobs
Using an evolution item can evolve a particular Pokémon, sometimes subject to a species-specific condition. Mega Evolution is a temporary battle transformation: the Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with a compatible Pokémon holding its matching Mega Stone. The Pokémon Company’s adventure guide and Nintendo’s game listing describe these distinct mechanics.

Do not assume every evolution is triggered by leveling or that every stone works on every Pokémon. Check the target species and use condition for the item you have. The official guide explains the broad mechanics but does not provide a complete species-by-species item list; the location reference below links to Serebii’s current item database for individual entries.
Where to find standard Evolution Stones and items
For base-game shopping, PowerPyx’s October 16, 2025 guide says Fire, Water, Thunder, and Leaf Stones can be bought during the story. It says other Evolution Stones become available at the Stone Emporium after the main story. It also notes that evolution items appear in Poké Ball pickups around the world. These are base-game directions, not a complete route list for the later DLC item pool. See the PowerPyx base-game item guide.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
For item-specific pickup locations and DLC-era entries, consult the relevant rows in Serebii’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A item database. The table gives representative routes; it is not a complete inventory. Item availability can depend on story progress, side missions, or access to Hyperspace Zones.
| Item | Known route or location | Scope and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Stone | Pickups in Jaune Sector 5, Magenta Sector 7, Vert Sector 2, North Boulevard, and Lysandre Labs B1F; side missions 26 and 57; shop on Vernal Avenue. | Serebii’s current location listing. Base-game guidance also identifies Fire Stone as one of four stones purchasable during the story. |
| Dusk Stone | Pickups in Jaune Sector 2, Magenta Sector 7, Rouge Sector 2, and several Vert District sectors; side mission 83; shop access on Vernal Avenue. | Serebii’s current location listing. Check its entry for the Pokémon and use condition. |
| Galarica Wreath | Relevant-item-power floating Poké Ball pickups in two- through five-star Hyperspace Zones; side mission 75, “Some Unusual Pokémon.” | DLC-era route in Serebii’s listing. The database associates it with Galarian Slowpoke; consult the current entry for the resulting evolution and trigger. |
| Other Evolution Stones and evolution-related items | Routes vary by item and may include pickups, the Stone Emporium, side missions, and Hyperspace content. | Serebii lists entries including Ice Stone, King’s Rock, Leaf Stone, Metal Coat, Moon Stone, and Prism Scale. Verify the specific item’s target and acquisition route in its entry. |
How to use the location list
- Identify the exact item name in your inventory or the Pokémon’s evolution entry.
- Open that item’s row in the linked database and check both its locations and any listed condition.
- Prioritize story or side-mission access where specified; do not treat a Hyperspace pickup as a base-game route.
- Confirm the item’s species association and trigger before using or trading it.
Published total counts are not consistent across base-game guides: PowerPyx labels its set 14 items, while Gamer Guides claims 16 Evolution Stones in its introduction but shows fewer rows in the opened table. Neither figure should be treated as the current total across versions and DLC. The Gamer Guides item page and Serebii reference cover different scopes.

Where to get Mega Stones
There are three broad acquisition routes, but a particular Mega Stone is not necessarily available through all of them:
- Stone Emporium: The Pokémon Company identifies it as a source of Mega Stones as well as Evolution Stones and related items.
- Quasartico Inc.: Exchange Mega Shards for Mega Stones. Pokémon earn shards by breaking Mega Crystal clusters scattered around Lumiose City.
- Rogue Mega battles: Nintendo says defeating Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon can reward valuable Mega Stones. This is a battle reward route, distinct from shard exchanges.
These acquisition categories are described in the official Pokémon gameplay guide and Nintendo listing. Check the specific stone’s current entry or in-game exchange before committing to a route, since availability varies by stone and can depend on unlocks.

Base-game examples and dated shard costs
Nintendo Life’s December 10, 2025 guide lists starter Mega Stones as available after the Rogue Absol encounter or from the Stone Emporium in the postgame. It describes other stones as Rogue Mega battle rewards or Quasartico Inc. exchanges, depending on the stone. Its examples include Pidgeotite for 180 Mega Shards and Gyaradosite for 240 Mega Shards at Rank F. Those are figures from that dated guide, not a guarantee of the current exchange requirement; verify the target stone and rank in-game. See Nintendo Life’s Mega Stone location guide.
Postgame and DLC availability
Item lists published for the base game are not comprehensive for Mega Dimension. Serebii’s broader reference includes DLC-era entries and Hyperspace acquisition routes, including Galarica Wreath, Prism Scale, and additional Mega Stones. If an item is absent from an older guide, check whether it belongs to the DLC pool rather than assuming it is unobtainable.
Availability can also involve ranked play or timed distributions. Such routes may change, and a current official notice is the best confirmation for limited-time rewards. The current Serebii database is a useful location reference, but it is a third-party database rather than an official publisher list.
