Those changes give the series a distinct direction, though one reviewer’s account suggests the city’s repetition, modest challenge, and battle bugs can blunt the impact.
What makes Pokémon Legends: Z-A feel different?
Real-time battles put the Trainer in the action
Nintendo describes Pokémon Legends: Z-A as the first Pokémon RPG in which players command Pokémon in real-time battles. Instead of choosing moves in the series’ familiar turn-based format, players direct Pokémon during the fight. That shift changes the rhythm of combat and gives the Trainer’s commands a more immediate feel. Nintendo’s product description also highlights rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon as a central threat. Nintendo’s game page outlines these features.

Mega Evolution is central again
Mega Evolution is not just a returning battle feature: it is tied to the game’s conflict with rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon. That gives a familiar series mechanic a prominent role in both combat and the story’s stakes, rather than treating it as a peripheral callback.
One city becomes the whole adventure’s frame
The game takes place in Lumiose City during a redevelopment project intended to make the city a place where people and Pokémon can live together. Rather than journeying across a broad region, players explore an urban setting and its wild zones. This concentrated structure is a meaningful change in how a Pokémon adventure is organized, though it also places more pressure on one environment to stay interesting.

#1 Best Overall
- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Does that make it a big improvement?
It makes the game a strong change of direction, but “improvement” depends on what a player values. Real-time combat and the city-centered structure are concrete departures from the familiar formula; whether they feel better comes down to their execution and how much variety the player finds in Lumiose.
Cat Bussell’s October 2025 TechRadar review called the result fresh and engaging, writing, “The final concoction produces a game that lands perfectly between familiar and fresh.” Bussell also reported that Lumiose could feel repetitive, the game was not especially challenging, and some battles had bugs. The reviewer said they played for 25 hours on Switch 2; those are the reviewer’s impressions, not independently reproduced findings.

- Venture into Hyperspace Lumiose in this additional story content that can be accessed after completing the main game
- Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
The central trade-off is clear: the game experiments with how Pokémon battles work and how a Pokémon world is structured, but its single-city focus can make repetition more noticeable. The review’s counterpoints do not erase the mechanical shift; they help explain why a bold direction may not feel like an unqualified upgrade to every player.
Which version and add-on should you know about?
| Option | What it is | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch | The base game; Nintendo lists a physical Nintendo Switch Game Card format. | Released October 16, 2025. The base game is required to access Mega Dimension DLC. |
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | A distinct edition with improved resolution and frame rates, according to Nintendo. | It is not the same edition as the original Switch release. |
| Mega Dimension | Downloadable additional story and content. | The Pokémon Company announced December 10, 2025 as its release date; Nintendo says the base game is required. |
| Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension bundle | A bundle pairing the Switch 2 Edition with the DLC. | The Pokémon Company’s update dated September 30, 2026 lists it as due October 29, 2026; availability may change. |
Nintendo’s product listing distinguishes the editions and states the DLC requirement. The Pokémon Company’s updates page gives the bundle date, while its November 6, 2025 Mega Dimension announcement describes the extra story and content and announced its release date. Because Mega Dimension is DLC, do not assume it is included with every base-game edition.

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A worth it?
If you want a Pokémon game that meaningfully changes the pace of battles and experiments with a city-focused adventure, the core design gives a strong reason to consider it. If you prefer broad regional exploration, consistently demanding battles, or a setting that keeps changing, the reported repetition and low difficulty may matter more. The fairest verdict is that Legends: Z-A is a compelling step forward in format and focus, rather than proof that every part of the series has improved.
