The confirmed starter choices in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. The Pokémon Company’s official game page names all three, but available official sources do not establish that earlier artwork deliberately hinted at them. The lineup is confirmed; the claim that it was teased beforehand remains speculation.
Who are the Pokémon Legends: Z-A starters?
Players can set out with one of three Pokémon: Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile, according to The Pokémon Company’s official game page. That is the clearest answer to the question of which Pokémon serve as the game’s starters.

The official page establishes the choices, not which one is strongest or best for a particular player. The sources cited here do not provide a comparative performance assessment, so choosing among them is a matter of preference rather than a substantiated gameplay ranking.
Were the starters teased before they were confirmed?
That has not been verified. Official materials confirm the eventual lineup and document a trailer announcement, but they do not establish that a specific earlier image or piece of artwork was intentionally designed to reveal Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
It is reasonable to describe an image as something fans interpreted as a possible hint if the image and its provenance are independently established. It is not accurate to present that interpretation as confirmed promotional intent without evidence from the creators or another reliable source.
What is officially known about the game?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in Lumiose City. The official gameplay description highlights wild zones in the city and real-time Pokémon battles; those features provide context for the game, but do not prove anything about whether its starters were teased early.

- Confirmed: Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile are the choices named on the official game page.
- Not established: that earlier artwork was intentionally made to preview those specific choices.
- Relevant context, not proof: the official trailer notice confirms trailer material was released, while the game’s Lumiose City setting and battle features say nothing about earlier promotional intent.
The Pokémon Company’s July 22, 2025 trailer notice confirms official trailer material. Nintendo Japan also published a July 22, 2025 announcement about the game and a special console set. Neither source, as described in the available official material, confirms that earlier artwork was intended as a starter reveal.
