If Pokémon Showdown loads but remains on “Connecting…,” the page has opened but its separate game-server connection may not have completed. First check whether the page itself loads, then compare in another supported, up-to-date browser. If you use a proxy, disable it and reload only to address a possible proxy-related lock. These checks can narrow down the problem, but they do not confirm a specific cause or guarantee a fix.
First, identify what is failing
If the Pokémon Showdown page itself will not load, the failure occurs before the game-server connection. If the page opens but stays at “Connecting…,” the client is visible, but that alone does not show whether the later connection failed or why.
Pokémon Showdown has separate client, login-server, and game-server components. Your browser loads the client; login-related functions involve the login server, while chat rooms, matchmaking, and battle simulation connect to the game server through SockJS. So a working homepage does not by itself prove that rooms and battles can connect. The project’s architecture documentation describes these components.
Try these checks in order
-
Check whether the page loads
Open the Pokémon Showdown client. Note whether the page itself fails to load or opens and stays at “Connecting…”; those are different symptoms.

Compare with another supported browser
Try a current version of another browser family listed by the official client repository: Chrome or another Chromium-based browser, Firefox, or Safari. The repository also lists Edge and mobile versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. It says Showdown is mostly developed on Chrome, but that does not mean other listed browsers cannot connect. If one browser works and another does not, that comparison helps narrow the issue without establishing its cause.

Check proxy use, if applicable
If you connect through a proxy, the official FAQ says users affected by a proxy-related lock will be unlocked by disabling the proxy and reloading the page. This is guidance for proxy-related locks, not a general fix for every connection problem. If you do not use a proxy, this step does not apply.

Record the exact symptom
Note whether the indicator stays at “Connecting…” or whether Showdown displays a specific error. Also record your device, browser and version, and whether the problem occurs in more than one browser. That information can help distinguish a persistent connection indicator from a more specific failure.
Can you tell whether Pokémon Showdown is down?
No conclusion about a service-wide outage follows from a page showing “Connecting…” alone. That indicator does not reveal whether the problem is on the service side or limited to an individual browser or network. The available official material here does not establish a current incident or provide a live status report, so check for an official announcement before treating the symptom as a confirmed outage.

What not to change without more evidence
The official guidance cited here supports comparing browsers and addressing proxy-related locks. It does not establish DNS changes, router resets, antivirus changes, firewall-rule edits, switching to HTTP, or reinstalling software as remedies for this symptom. Avoid changing network or security settings on that basis alone.
