To make curry in Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, open Pokémon Camp, choose whether to add a main ingredient, select berries, then complete the flame-fanning, stirring, and finishing-input minigame. The main ingredient sets the curry variety, berries shape its flavor, and your cooking performance affects its rating. Cooking is optional for progressing through the main adventure, but it can restore Pokémon HP, increase friendliness, and fill entries in the Curry Dex.
How to make curry in Pokémon Sword and Shield
Set up camp and choose the cooking option. You can cook by yourself; multiplayer is not required. The official Pokémon Camp guide describes the core rhythm: “You’ll need to fan the flames until they’re strong enough and then stir the pot just right to make the best batch of curry!”
- Choose ingredients. Select a main ingredient if you want one, then choose berries. The main ingredient is optional, but it helps determine the curry variety.
- Fan the flames. Use the available button or Joy-Con motion input to build the fire. Aim for a strong, steady flame rather than assuming faster input is always better.
- Stir the pot. Follow the on-screen prompt and stir at a controlled pace. The aim is to mix the curry without spilling it.
- Time the finishing input. Press the button or use the motion input when the on-screen timing cue calls for it.
The game offers button and motion-control input options for the minigame; a particular controller motion or real-world recipe is not mandatory. Ingredient choice affects what kind of curry you make, while your minigame performance contributes to its taste rating.
How ingredients determine curry variety and flavor
Main ingredient: curry variety
The main ingredient identifies the curry variety. Changing it can produce a different Curry Dex entry even when you use the same berries. The official Pokémon Camp page confirms that curry changes according to the ingredients and berries you choose.

Berries: flavor
Berries contribute taste values. In the Serebii Curry Dex mechanics reference, the combined berry tastes determine the flavor: the strongest combined taste wins, while tied taste values produce the standard flavor for that curry type. The six documented outcomes are spicy, dry, sweet, bitter, sour, and standard (neutral).
Some berries have more than one taste, so a berry’s label alone may not predict the outcome. If you are targeting a particular flavor, consider the combined values of every berry you add; rare multi-taste berries may strengthen or offset another flavor. Treat recipe lists as starting points, not guarantees, unless they specify the full combination.

How to make good curry and what the rating does
The curry’s rating reflects your cooking performance and ingredients. For better results, complete each stage carefully: build the fire, stir without losing control, and hit the finishing cue. The game does not make a particular real-world recipe necessary; focus on the selected ingredients and the minigame prompts.
Pokémon’s beginner tips for Pokémon Camp say curry can restore Pokémon HP and increase friendliness. The detailed mechanics reference also describes experience and sociability effects, with some boosts varying according to a Pokémon’s nature. These are in-game effects, and better-rated curry can provide stronger or additional benefits.

Using the Curry Dex as a completion goal
The Curry Dex records curries you have cooked and the highest taste rating for each. Serebii’s Curry Dex reference lists 151 combinations. If you want to complete it, vary both the main ingredient and berry flavor rather than repeatedly making only one successful recipe. The reference says completing the Curry Dex earns golden cooking utensils from the Camping Guru in Hammerlocke Hills.
One version difference matters for completion: Bob’s Food Tin is exclusive to Pokémon Sword, while Bach’s Food Tin is exclusive to Pokémon Shield. According to the same reference, a player seeking every listed entry needs access to the other version’s ingredient through trade.

Cooking with other players

Visiting camps online requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; local communication does not require one. Neither online nor local multiplayer is needed to cook alone.
