Pokémon Sword and Shield: Pokémon That Are Still Unavailable After the DLC

Sword and Shield still exclude Pokémon after the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra. Published totals disagree, and Pokémon HOME cannot transfer species unsupported by the games.

Even with the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra included, Pokémon Sword and Shield do not support every Pokémon species. Pokémon HOME cannot add an absent species to either game: Pokémon can only be moved into titles in which they appear. The total number still unavailable is disputed, so there is no reliable single count to give without first settling how the lists treat forms and scope.

What “unavailable” means in Sword and Shield

This article covers Sword and Shield with both Expansion Pass areas—the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra—included. The expansions brought additional returning Pokémon to the games, so lists made before their release do not describe the post-expansion roster. The official Sword and Shield Expansion Pass site describes the added areas and their Pokémon content.

Three claims that can sound alike are not interchangeable: a Pokémon may be absent from a regional Pokédex, unobtainable through normal gameplay, or unsupported by the game as a transfer destination. Check the specific species and the specific claim rather than treating every “not available” list as a definitive answer to all three questions.

How many Pokémon are unavailable after both expansions?

Two maintained reference lists disagree. Serebii reports that 234 Pokémon are unavailable in the games; Pokémon Database reports 241. Both figures were checked on October 8, 2026, and neither page states a publication year. The discrepancy is not resolved by the available information, so neither total should be presented as definitive.

Reference Reported total How the page describes its list
Serebii 234 unavailable Pokémon Labels the list as unavailable Pokémon.
Pokémon Database 241 unobtainable Pokémon Describes the list as Pokémon not in the Galar Pokédex and says they are not coded into the game.

The totals may reflect differences in scope or how forms are counted, but the sources do not establish the precise reason. For that reason, a single exhaustive numbered list would imply more certainty than the references support.

Does Pokémon HOME let you transfer missing Pokémon?

No. HOME supports Sword and Shield, but compatibility is destination-specific. The Pokémon Company International states, “Pokémon can only be moved to games that they appear in,” and gives Dolliv as an example of a Pokémon that cannot be moved into Sword or Shield. See the official Pokémon HOME compatibility announcement from June 1, 2023.

Pokemon Shield - Nintendo Switch (European Version)
  • New entries in the main series of Pokémon RPGs arrive on Nintendo Switch simultaneously in late 2019
  • The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games take place in the newly discovered Galar Region
  • Galar is an expansive region with diverse environments - an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest and craggy, snow-covered mountains
  • Fans will have the opportunity to visit Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion
  • Newly discovered partner Pokémon join in this new iteration of the games - Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble

HOME is a storage and transfer service, not a way to insert unsupported species into a game. A Pokémon being stored in HOME does not mean it can be transferred into Sword or Shield.

What did the expansions change?

The Expansion Pass added the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, along with returning Pokémon that were not available in the base games. The official Expansion Pass page describes both areas; the Crown Tundra page highlights returning Legendary Pokémon and Dynamax Adventures.

Nintendo Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass or Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass (Retail Version) - [Switch Digital Code]
  • Continue your Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield adventure in The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, two new areas to explore that will be added to the Galar region as part of the Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass or Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass
  • Redeem your download code in the Nintendo eShop for either the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass or the Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass. Upon redeeming the code, you will be prompted to select one Expansion Pass. Only redeemable for one Expansion Pass.
  • You'll also see some familiar Pokémon that didn't appear in the Galar region before, a total of over 200 Pokémon
  • Part 1: The Isle of Armor is available now; Part 2: The Crown Tundra is scheduled for release during the fall of 2020
  • If you purchase the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass or the Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, you'll receive two codes redeemable to get two special uniform sets of in-game apparel as a bonus

The expansions widened the roster; they did not restore every excluded species. Buying the Expansion Pass is relevant if you want its added areas and Pokémon, but it does not make unsupported species transferable into the games.

How to check a particular Pokémon

  1. Check the post-expansion lists. Compare the species against a maintained Sword and Shield unavailable-Pokémon reference, noting that Serebii and Pokémon Database publish different totals.
  2. Separate availability from transfer support. Confirm whether your question is about appearing in a regional Pokédex, being obtainable in-game, or being supported as a destination for a transfer.
  3. Check HOME compatibility for the destination. A Pokémon can be moved into Sword or Shield only if it appears in that game; having it in HOME alone is not sufficient.
