There is no evidence-based “best” starter for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves yet. The official announcement confirms each first partner’s type, ability, and concept, but does not establish comparative movesets, evolutions, stats, or battle roles. For now, choose the type and design you most enjoy; if strategy is your priority, wait for more official gameplay details.
What is confirmed about the three starters?
The Pokémon Company’s official game page identifies Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua as the first-partner Pokémon and publishes their types, abilities, categories, and short descriptions.

These descriptions offer character flavor, not evidence that one starter will be stronger or better suited to a particular playstyle. The official page also lists heights and weights—Browt at 0.3 m and 3.5 kg, Pombon at 0.4 m and 6.7 kg, and Gecqua at 0.3 m and 4.3 kg—but those character measurements do not establish gameplay advantages.
How should you choose a starter now?
- Pick the type you enjoy. Choose Grass, Fire, or Water according to your preference. The announcement confirms each type and ability, but does not provide a comparative matchup chart for these games.
- Choose the design and personality that appeal to you. Browt is energetic and clumsy, Pombon friendly and guileless, and Gecqua clever and self-assured. Treat those descriptions as a matter of taste, not a prediction about evolution or battle role.
- If strategy matters most, hold off on a strategic pick. Wait for official information about evolutions, moves, stats, and battle systems before trying to match a starter to a specific role.
Can any starter be called the best for a playstyle?
Not on the published information. The announcement does not establish final evolutions, move coverage, difficulty, competitive roles, exploration utility, or version-specific advantages. It therefore cannot support claims that one starter is easiest, strongest, best for beginners, or best for a particular strategy.

The games are planned as Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives, with a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, according to The Pokémon Company’s February 27, 2026 announcement. Their announced setting includes windswept islands, a vast ocean, distinct Pokémon ecosystems, and natural forces, but the official materials do not say how those elements affect the usefulness of any starter.
The game is still in development. The official Pokémon page cautions: “Screenshots and footage are from a product in development and not final. Actual gameplay experience may vary.”
