Yes, you can control a browser bubble game with EEG hardware—but “control with your mind” is a simplified description. The project measures a single EEG channel, estimates beta-band activity, and makes bubbles move or pop when the signal crosses a threshold. It does not read words, identify arbitrary thoughts, or prove that you are concentrating.

The beginner project, published on Hackster.io on May 22, 2025, uses Upside Down Labs’ Neuro PlayGround Lite, wireless BLE firmware, and the open-source Brain_Bubbles browser game. The tutorial estimates about 30 minutes for the basic setup, although electrode placement, firmware, and Bluetooth troubleshooting can take longer.

What the EEG bubble game actually does

Electrodes detect tiny voltage changes at the scalp. Neuro PlayGround Lite amplifies and transmits that biosignal wirelessly. The browser software then works with brainwave-band values, including the beta range identified by the project as 12–30 Hz. When the beta-related value rises above the selected threshold, the game animates the bubbles; when it falls below the threshold, the activity stops.

The tutorial uses a default beta threshold of 0.40. That number is a starting point, not a universal measure of focus. The project treats beta activity as a concentration-related trigger, but beta power can also change because of eye blinks, facial movement, jaw tension, posture, electrode contact, cable movement, or electrical interference.

Place the electrodes

The tutorial uses a simplified single-channel prefrontal arrangement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the positive cable to A0P.
  2. Connect the negative cable to A0N.
  3. Connect the reference cable to REF.
  4. Place the A0P electrode on the forehead between the approximate Fp1 and Fp2 positions.
  5. Place A0N on the bony area behind one earlobe.
  6. Place REF on the bony area behind the opposite earlobe.

Fp1 and Fp2 are locations from the international 10–20 EEG placement system. This arrangement is intended for an accessible maker demonstration, not a clinical EEG montage.

Prepare the skin

The project recommends applying Nuprep to the electrode areas, rubbing briefly, and then cleaning the areas with an alcohol swab or wet wipe. The goal is to reduce oils and dead skin that can weaken contact and increase noise.

  • Do not place electrodes on broken, infected, or irritated skin.
  • Do not abrade aggressively or use excessive pressure.
  • Follow the instructions for the electrode and preparation products you use.
  • Stop if the skin becomes painful or significantly irritated.

Flash BLE firmware to NPG Lite

The original tutorial uses Arduino IDE and the official NPG-LITE-BLE sketch. Firmware and software can change, so check the current official NPG Lite software ecosystem first. It also lists the NPG Lite Flasher and separate serial, BLE, and Wi-Fi firmware options.

Launch Brain_Bubbles

  1. Download or clone the Brain_Bubbles repository.
  2. Extract the archive if you downloaded a ZIP file.
  3. Open index.html in a compatible browser.
  4. Turn on Bluetooth on the laptop or PC.
  5. Click Connect in the game.
  6. Select the NPG Lite board from the Bluetooth device list.
  7. Set the beta threshold. Begin with the documented value of 0.40.
  8. Click Start Stream.
  9. Remain as still as possible and watch the band values and bubble animation.

The interface reportedly includes Connect, Disconnect, Start Stream, Stop Stream, a beta-threshold slider, and displays for different brainwave-band percentages. A successful connection should show incoming data and changing values. Bubbles should become active when the relevant value exceeds the threshold and stop when it drops below it.

How to tune the threshold

Do not treat 0.40 as a measurement that works identically for every user. Electrode impedance, skin preparation, placement, physiology, movement, and the surrounding electrical environment all affect the signal.

  • Bubbles trigger constantly: raise the threshold gradually, improve electrode contact, relax your face, and check for blinking, jaw clenching, forehead movement, cable movement, or charger-related interference.
  • Bubbles never trigger: confirm that streaming is active and the values are changing, then lower the threshold gradually. Recheck electrode polarity, reference placement, and the condition of the electrodes.
  • Response is unstable: sit still, keep the board and cables from moving, use fresh electrodes, and compare the display while deliberately blinking or clenching your jaw. If those actions cause large changes, you are probably seeing movement or muscle artifacts as well as brain-related signal.

Troubleshooting

No signal or a very weak signal

  1. Reapply skin preparation correctly.
  2. Confirm the three connections: A0P, A0N, and REF.
  3. Press the electrodes firmly onto clean skin.
  4. Confirm both reference electrodes are on the intended bony areas behind the ears.
  5. Keep cables still and avoid touching the electrodes.
  6. Inspect the snaps and cables for looseness or damage.
  7. Restart NPG Lite and reconnect.

The official signal-acquisition troubleshooting guide provides additional general checks.

Bluetooth connection fails

  1. Stop the web interface.
  2. Power-cycle NPG Lite.
  3. Toggle the computer’s Bluetooth off and on.
  4. Close other applications that may already be connected to the board.
  5. Reopen the game and click Connect again.
  6. If the board still cannot connect, confirm that BLE firmware is installed and reflash it if necessary.

The game responds to every movement

This is expected to be a possibility with a simple forehead channel. Blinks, eye movement, facial muscles, jaw tension, posture changes, and electrode shifts can all influence the measured signal. Improve contact, reduce movement, remove unnecessary nearby electronics, and compare readings during controlled movements before interpreting the result as concentration.

Is this really mind control?

Only in the broadest maker-project sense. The computer receives a biosignal and converts a measured range into a game event, so the user can create a feedback loop through mental effort and stillness. But the system does not determine what you are thinking. It does not distinguish “pop the bubbles” from a particular word, image, memory, or intention.

The most accurate description is: a single-channel EEG demo that threshold-checks a beta-related value and maps it to bubble animation. The result can be entertaining and educational while remaining highly sensitive to artifacts. It should not be used for diagnosis, therapy, cognitive assessment, or claims about a person’s mental state.

What else can you build?

NPG Lite is broader than this game. The same platform is documented for EEG, EMG, ECG, and EOG experiments. Its official ecosystem includes the NPG Lite Flasher, Chords-Web, and Chords-Python. Possible follow-up projects include blink-controlled interfaces using EOG, muscle-controlled games using EMG, heart-rate visualizations, neurofeedback experiments, and other browser or Python-based biosignal projects.

Verdict

Pop Bubbles With Your Mind is worth attempting if you want a short, open-source introduction to EEG, BLE hardware, and beginner BCI design. Buy or use NPG Lite as a development platform, with bubble popping as one approachable demonstration—not as a magic mind-reading gadget. The project is inexpensive compared with a full research setup, but success depends on careful electrode preparation, firmware compatibility, Bluetooth behavior, threshold tuning, and accepting that the signal may include plenty of non-brain artifacts.
