To stream vertical video on YouTube, go live from the YouTube mobile app in portrait orientation, or use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to send vertical and horizontal versions together. For a dual stream, YouTube uses a center crop for the vertical view by default; you can change it to fit-to-phone-width or a stacked layout. Set up the vertical format before you start: YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream has begun.
Choose the right way to stream
| Method | Setup | Vertical composition | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile app | Start a live stream in the app. | Choose portrait orientation and prevent the phone from rotating unexpectedly. | Quick updates, vlogging, or a phone-only broadcast. |
| YouTube Live Control Room | Set up a stream in YouTube Studio; YouTube creates horizontal and vertical formats together by default. | Choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked layout. | A creator who wants a landscape view for some viewers and a vertical view for mobile Shorts browsing. |
| Third-party encoder | Configure an encoder to send feeds through RTMP(S), using a second stream key for the vertical version. | Send the matching portrait and landscape feeds to their respective keys. | Encoder-based production or separately composed feeds. |
In YouTube’s dual-stream setup, the vertical version can appear as viewers browse Shorts in the YouTube mobile app, while other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats share one go-live notification, one stream URL, and the same live chat. The vertical preview is center-cropped by default unless you change its layout. YouTube’s dual-streaming guidance describes how the formats work.
Check eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. For live streaming from the mobile app, YouTube lists an additional requirement of at least 50 subscribers, along with channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Live streaming must be enabled; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Eligibility and interface requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current guidance before planning an event.
Go live in portrait from the YouTube mobile app
- Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements and that live streaming is enabled.
- Open the YouTube app, tap Create, then tap Live.
- Choose portrait orientation and lock screen rotation so the phone does not switch orientation during the broadcast.
- Frame the shot, check lighting and audio, and test the connection. YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream to check picture and sound before a public event.
- Start the stream when the preview and connection are ready.
Charge the phone before streaming, enable Do Not Disturb, and consider an external battery pack for a long session. YouTube estimates that streaming may use 1% of a phone’s battery per minute, but that is a rough planning estimate—not a guarantee for every device or setup. YouTube’s mobile streaming guidance also recommends considering the phone camera’s limitations when arranging lighting.

Stream horizontal and vertical video together in Live Control Room
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. Create a stream or select a scheduled one.
- In Manage, select the stream and open Edit layout in the vertical preview.
- Choose Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Adjust zoom and position to frame the vertical view.
- Check both the vertical preview and the intended horizontal framing before starting. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.
If you edit the layout in the canvas, YouTube says you can continue adjusting it while live. The selected layout matters: a center crop may cut off subjects or on-screen details near the sides of the landscape frame, while fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts arrange the content differently. Preview the result rather than assuming the horizontal composition will translate cleanly to portrait.
YouTube describes the dual-stream configuration and layout options in its Live Control Room guidance.

Use a third-party encoder for dual streaming
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab.
- Change the vertical preview setting from Auto to Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select the second stream key for the vertical version.
- Configure the encoder so each stream key receives the matching orientation. Check that the portrait and landscape feeds correspond to the same event and moment.
- Start the encoder, review the Live Control Room preview, and confirm the stream is accessible on a phone before the event begins.
A stream key is a credential that tells an encoder where to send a feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube rather than sharing it further. YouTube’s stream key guidance explains its role.
Run a preflight test
For an encoder-based event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, reviewing the preview, checking that any local recording is intact, and confirming that the event works on mobile. Leave 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate requirement, as YouTube recommends. That margin is for the total outgoing streams, not each feed considered in isolation.

- Check the network’s upload capacity against the combined bitrate and leave the recommended headroom.
- Confirm the stream opens on a phone and the encoder is sending to the correct stream keys.

Know the vertical-viewer tradeoffs
Vertical Live can give viewers a full-screen portrait experience while they browse Shorts in the YouTube mobile app. Some features available elsewhere on YouTube are not available to viewers in the vertical feed: clickable links in chat or the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, Premieres, and Live Redirect. Check YouTube’s current feature comparison before relying on any of these features, as availability can change. YouTube’s vertical and horizontal live feature comparison lists the differences.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The app does not offer Live: Check mobile eligibility, channel verification, restrictions, and whether live streaming has been enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The image looks cropped or important details disappear: In Live Control Room, change the vertical layout or adjust its zoom and position. Review both previews before going live.
- The phone switches orientation: Lock screen rotation after choosing portrait orientation and before starting.
- The encoder feed is missing or appears in the wrong format: Confirm the vertical preview is set to Encoder, the correct second stream key is selected, and the portrait feed is sent to that key.
- The picture or sound is unreliable: Test with an unlisted stream, check the connection, and review the preview before the public event.
- The stream struggles when sending both formats: Check the combined bitrate against available upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The phone battery is running down: Start with a charged phone, reduce avoidable battery use, and consider an external battery pack. YouTube’s 1%-per-minute figure is only an estimate.
