For a 30-day, 24-hour schedule, each 1 watt of average wall draw uses 0.72 kWh. Measure the complete setup, then multiply its monthly-equivalent kWh by the applicable per-unit rate.
Estimate the electricity cost
Use the power draw at the wall, not the wattage printed on the computer’s power supply. The formula estimates energy use; your bill may also include fixed charges, duties, adjustments or other amounts.
- Monthly kWh = average wall power in watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000.
- For continuous operation over 30 days: monthly kWh = average watts × 0.72.
- Approximate incremental energy charge = monthly kWh × your applicable marginal energy rate in ₹/kWh.
The table shows illustrative arithmetic only. The ₹3–₹8/kWh values are calculation scenarios, not a claim about a national tariff or a typical OBS computer. These totals include energy charges only.

These examples do not account for fixed charges, slab thresholds, subsidies, duties, fuel adjustments, landlord markups or interruptions. If the computer is not running for all 720 hours, use its actual operating hours instead.

Why your bill may differ
The computer and equipment
OBS does not have one fixed electricity draw. Hardware, encoding load, CPU or GPU use, and connected devices affect consumption. A power supply’s rated wattage is not the computer’s continuous draw. The available sources do not establish a representative wattage for an OBS playlist setup, and no specific equipment has been measured here.
Decide what you are estimating: the computer alone, or the full setup. A display, router, speakers, capture devices and lights add to the total if they run as part of the stream. A display that stays on all day can materially change the number.

Your tariff and room’s billing arrangement
Retail electricity tariffs are set by state commissions, and the applicable bill depends on the consumer category, slab, subsidy and charges. There is no dependable India-wide rate to use for a personal estimate. Check your latest bill or the relevant distribution company’s current tariff order.
Renting a room does not by itself establish that electricity is billed at a commercial rate. An Odisha FY 2025–26 order classifies a dwelling used solely for residential purposes as domestic whether it is rented or owned; temporary-stay hotels and guest houses are excluded. That is an Odisha example, not a rule for every state. Check the local order and your actual billing arrangement.

If the room is on a landlord’s meter or submeter, ask how the units are read, what per-unit rate is charged, and whether fixed charges or other bill components are shared. A plug-in meter can show energy use, but it cannot tell you what rate your landlord applies.
Time of use and interruptions
Some states may have time-of-day tariffs. Government policy describes state-specified solar-hour tariffs 10–20% below normal and peak-hour tariffs 10–20% above normal; for smart-meter users, the tariff takes effect after a smart meter is installed. Whether such rates apply to your room depends on the state order and meter arrangement. Outages or planned shutdowns reduce actual runtime and therefore energy use.

Measure the actual setup
A compatible plug-in energy meter can report connected equipment’s watts and accumulated kWh. For example, the Yantram PM10 product page describes those readings and an expense display: Yantram PM10 digital energy meter. Check that any meter suits the socket and load rating before use.
- Choose the equipment you want to include. Connect the meter so it measures that equipment, including the display or router if you want their consumption counted.
- Run the OBS playlist normally for several representative days. Record the meter’s accumulated kWh and the elapsed hours; a short snapshot may miss changes in load.
- Calculate average power if useful: accumulated kWh × 1,000 ÷ elapsed hours = average watts.
- Estimate a 30-day total from your measured daily energy: daily kWh × 30. For a different number of operating hours or days, use those values instead.
- Multiply the estimated kWh by the marginal rate that applies to your bill. Treat fixed charges, duties and any landlord-applied charges separately.

A local tariff example—not a current estimate for your room
The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff compilation lists Chandigarh rates effective 1 August 2024. It shows domestic energy rates of ₹2.75, ₹4.80 and ₹5.40/kWh across listed slabs, with a ₹30/kW/month fixed charge. The same table lists commercial rates of ₹4.50, ₹4.70 and ₹5.90/kWh, with fixed or demand charges as well. These are historical Chandigarh figures, not a substitute for your current local bill or tariff: CEA tariff compilation.
