“The program can’t start because powermenuhook.dll is missing from your computer.” The powermenuhook.dll error usually means that the old PowerMenu utility is damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or still referenced by Windows after removal.

powermenuhook.dll is not a Windows system file. It is a 32-bit application DLL associated with PowerMenu, a utility developed by Thong Nguyen that adds commands such as Always on Top, transparency, Minimize to Tray, and process priority to window menus.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that best matches what you see:

  • PowerMenu should still be installed: Repair or reinstall the complete PowerMenu package in its original application folder.
  • The error appeared after an antivirus scan or restart: Check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
  • PowerMenu was already deleted: Remove its leftover startup entry or scheduled task.
  • The file exists but Windows reports a bad-image or loading error: Replace the complete application package rather than copying another DLL.
  • You downloaded the DLL separately: Do not place it in System32 or register it. Remove it and obtain the complete program package from a trustworthy source.
  • Other Windows programs also fail: Check Windows component health with DISM and SFC.
  • The file is in a temporary or unrelated folder: Treat it as suspicious and scan the complete file and its containing archive.

What powermenuhook.dll does

PowerMenu uses a hook DLL to integrate its commands with other application windows. Windows loads that DLL into the calling application when PowerMenu needs to add its window-management features.

That is why the file normally belongs beside the PowerMenu executable, inside PowerMenu’s own program directory. It is not a shared Windows library and should not normally be copied to:

C:WindowsSystem32

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application can still run through Windows compatibility support. That does not mean its private DLL belongs in C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is the folder used by the 32-bit PowerMenu installation that loads it.

Reported file databases associate the DLL with the internal name PowerMenuHook and identify it as a Win32 file. Those third-party metadata reports should not be treated as a current developer specification. The important identification is the application relationship: powermenuhook.dll belongs to PowerMenu, not to Windows, DirectX, .NET, a Visual C++ redistributable, or a hardware driver.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete PowerMenu package

This is the safest primary fix when PowerMenu is still wanted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download only powermenuhook.dll. A missing DLL may be one symptom of an incomplete archive, a damaged executable, missing companion files, or an old installation that was partly removed.

Check whether PowerMenu is still installed

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Search the drives where applications are normally stored for:
    text
    PowerMenu.exe
  3. Also search for:
    text
    powermenuhook.dll
  4. Right-click any result and select Open file location.
  5. Check whether the DLL and the PowerMenu executable are in the same application folder.
  6. Look for a shortcut in the Start menu, desktop, Startup folder, or Task Manager’s startup list that points to that folder.

If PowerMenu.exe is present but powermenuhook.dll is absent, the installation is incomplete. If both files are present but the error remains, the DLL may be damaged, blocked, or being loaded by a different stale path.

Reinstall PowerMenu

  1. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for PowerMenu.
  5. If it appears, select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the complete PowerMenu package from a source you can verify and trust.
  8. Install it into its own application folder rather than a Windows system directory.
  9. Start PowerMenu from its installed shortcut.
  10. Restart Windows again and check whether the error returns.

The original developer’s current official distribution could not be verified. Do not treat a random DLL archive or automated DLL-repair page as an authoritative source. If you retain a copy of the original PowerMenu archive, scan it before extraction and keep the complete package together.

What success looks like

The error should disappear when Windows starts PowerMenu. The application should launch without asking for a separate DLL, and its executable and hook DLL should remain together in the same application directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling produces the same error, continue with the antivirus and startup checks below rather than copying the DLL to another folder.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine a hook DLL because it interacts with other windows and processes. A historical antivirus report involving PowerMenu does not prove that every copy is malicious, and it does not prove that every detection is a false positive.

Check the security record before restoring anything.

Check Protection history

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections for powermenuhook.dll, PowerMenu.exe, or the PowerMenu installation folder.
  5. Open a detection to see its path, threat classification, and available actions.
  6. Confirm that the detected path belongs to the PowerMenu folder you expected.

Microsoft documents the process for reviewing and restoring quarantined files in its Defender quarantine guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:

  • The PowerMenu package came from a trustworthy source.
  • The detected path is the expected PowerMenu directory.
  • The complete archive has been scanned.
  • The antivirus detection has been reviewed rather than ignored.
  • No other reputable security product identifies the file as malware.

If multiple reputable scanners classify the file as malicious, do not restore it. Remove PowerMenu and scan Windows instead.

After a legitimate restore, reinstall the complete application package if possible. Restoring one DLL may leave the program with other missing or damaged files.

Fix 3: Remove a leftover startup entry

A deleted application can continue to produce a DLL error if Windows still tries to launch it at sign-in. PowerMenu may be referenced by startup mechanisms or scheduled tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for PowerMenu or an entry whose location points to an old PowerMenu folder.
  4. Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Disabling the entry stops the launch attempt, but it does not necessarily remove the obsolete reference. If PowerMenu is no longer needed, continue with the scheduled-task check.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open the application.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library in the left pane.
  4. Review tasks whose names or actions refer to PowerMenu.
  5. Double-click a suspicious task.
  6. Open the Actions tab.
  7. Confirm that the action points to the old PowerMenu executable or folder.
  8. If you no longer use PowerMenu, right-click the task and choose Delete.

Do not delete a task merely because its name contains the word “Power.” Confirm its full executable path first.

Check the Startup folders

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
    text
    shell:startup
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Remove a PowerMenu shortcut only if you have confirmed that PowerMenu is no longer required.
  5. Repeat with:
    text
    shell:common startup

Restart Windows after cleanup. If the message disappears and PowerMenu is no longer needed, the problem was a stale startup reference rather than a Windows DLL failure.

Fix 4: Check whether the DLL is genuine

A file named powermenuhook.dll is not automatically safe merely because its name matches the expected file.

Be cautious when the file is located in:

  • A temporary directory
  • The Downloads folder
  • A random folder under your user profile
  • An unrelated game or application directory
  • A directory with an unusual executable that you do not recognize

Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect:

  1. The General tab for its location and size.
  2. The Details tab for product and file information.
  3. The Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. The file’s antivirus verdict.

A missing digital signature does not by itself prove malware, especially for old software. However, an unexpected path, unexplained executable, or repeated security detection should be treated seriously.

Do not use DLL download websites as a repair source. Random copies can contain malware, the wrong architecture, incompatible dependencies, or a modified binary. Even a clean copy may not fix the damaged PowerMenu installation that originally caused the error.

Fix 5: Do not copy the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64

Copying an application-private DLL into a Windows directory is usually the wrong repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It can:

  • Leave the original PowerMenu installation incomplete
  • Cause Windows to load the wrong copy
  • Create DLL search-path conflicts
  • Make future cleanup more difficult
  • Hide the real cause, such as quarantine or a stale startup task

Keep powermenuhook.dll beside the PowerMenu executable that uses it. Do not place it in System32, SysWOW64, or another application’s folder.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing every missing DLL.

A PowerMenu hook DLL should not be registered unless original product documentation specifically requires registration. Running a command such as this is not a valid default repair:

regsvr32 powermenuhook.dll

If you already tried it and received an error, reinstall the complete PowerMenu package instead. Microsoft explains the DLL registration model and DllRegisterServer in its DLL registration documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not normally recreate a third-party powermenuhook.dll.

Use these commands when multiple Windows applications are failing, Windows updates are damaged, or you have other signs of system corruption.

PC Power Button, Desktop Power Button PC External Power Switch ON Off LED PC Power Supply Button SW Extension for Computer Motherboard
  • External Desktop PC Power Switch: It is recommended for home users, computer rooms, bare board machines, water-cooled chassis DIY, etc. If the case is placed in a hard-to-reach place, use this switch to lead to a place where it is convenient to operate.
  • Easy to install by Sticker: Please check the installation instructions on product description. Just connect the POWER LED+, POWER LED-,POWER SW connectors with motherboard and stick the adhesive
  • If the button on the chassis panel is damaged, this repair is a very good choice. The switch wiring can be inserted from the optical drive position on the front panel, the fan window on the back panel, the expansion slot on the back panel, etc.
  • Comes with 1 to 2 Splitter: the small 1 to 2 splitter board makes the power button works with your original power supply works together
  • Package included: 1x Computer Power Switch ON/OFF with 1.7M cable; 1x 1 to 2 splitters; 1x adhesive stickers; 1x installation manua.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run:
    cmd
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  7. Wait for the operation to finish.

Run SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations means SFC did not find damaged protected system files. It does not confirm that PowerMenu is repaired. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and run the commands again from an elevated Command Prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating these commands will not replace a third-party PowerMenu DLL. When the error is limited to PowerMenu, reinstalling or removing PowerMenu remains the correct fix.

If manually comparing component health, finding the damaged Windows component, and repeating DISM and SFC is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling PowerMenu remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when other applications also fail

powermenuhook.dll is not a device driver. Device Manager and driver updates will not normally restore it.

Check drivers only if the same period also brought display problems, crashes, missing devices, or failures in several unrelated applications.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the symptom, such as Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider and current status.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not uninstall a working driver merely because PowerMenu reports a missing DLL. Driver maintenance cannot substitute for restoring the PowerMenu package.

When several device drivers are outdated and manually identifying the correct versions is the real problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, while reinstalling PowerMenu remains the definitive repair for powermenuhook.dll.

What not to reinstall

There is no reliable evidence that this file is supplied by:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET
  • Windows Features
  • A graphics driver
  • A sound driver

Reinstalling those components should not be the first response to this error. Enabling optional Windows features also will not normally recreate an application-private PowerMenu DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message says “specified module could not be found”

This wording can be misleading. It may mean that the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean that Windows found the DLL and could not load one of its dependencies.

The safer response is to:

  1. Confirm the executable that generated the message.
  2. Check the PowerMenu folder.
  3. Inspect antivirus quarantine.
  4. Reinstall the complete PowerMenu package.
  5. Remove the stale startup reference if PowerMenu is no longer used.

Do not search for individual dependency DLLs and copy them into Windows folders.

If the message says the file is corrupted or not designed to run on Windows

A bad-image message can indicate:

  • A damaged PowerMenu DLL
  • An incomplete archive extraction
  • An incompatible binary
  • A file replaced by a different program
  • A malicious file using the expected name

Check whether the calling program is 32-bit and whether the DLL came from the same PowerMenu package. A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application, but its DLL must match the application that loads it.

Replace the entire PowerMenu installation rather than mixing DLLs from different sources.

Prevention after the repair

After PowerMenu works or has been removed:

  • Keep the executable and its private DLLs in one application folder.
  • Do not download replacement DLLs individually.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before restoring legacy software.
  • Remove obsolete startup entries when uninstalling old utilities.
  • Keep a scan of any archived installer before opening it.
  • Record the full path shown in future error messages.
  • Do not delete unrelated tasks or registry entries based only on the word “Power.”

FAQ

Is powermenuhook.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with PowerMenu, an older Windows utility by Thong Nguyen. It is not a standard Windows component.

Where should powermenuhook.dll be located?

Normally, it should be in the PowerMenu application directory beside the PowerMenu executable. It should not normally be copied to System32 or SysWOW64.

Should I download the DLL by itself?

No. A standalone DLL can be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete. Repair or reinstall the complete PowerMenu package from a source whose origin you can verify.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Usually no. Registration is for DLLs that support the COM registration mechanism. A missing PowerMenu hook DLL should be repaired through the application installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did the error appear after a reboot?

The file may have been quarantined, deleted during cleanup, or left behind as a missing component while a startup entry continued trying to launch PowerMenu.

Can SFC restore it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not third-party PowerMenu files. Use SFC and DISM only when there are broader signs of Windows corruption.

What if I no longer use PowerMenu?

Uninstall it if it appears in Installed apps. Then disable or remove its obsolete startup entry or scheduled task, restart Windows, and confirm that the message no longer appears.

What evidence should I collect if the error continues?

Record the complete error text, the program named in the dialog, the full path of PowerMenu.exe, the location of powermenuhook.dll, the Protection History result, and any startup task or shortcut that references PowerMenu. That information distinguishes a damaged installation from a quarantined file, stale startup entry, or suspicious impersonation.
