Yes—PPSSPP and RetroArch are available through Apple’s App Store. Both arrived on May 15, 2024, after Apple changed its App Review Guidelines. PPSSPP is a dedicated PlayStation Portable (PSP) emulator; RetroArch is a multi-system frontend that can load a PSP core. Neither app includes commercial games, and App Store builds have important technical limits, especially around just-in-time (JIT) compilation.
What Apple changed
Apple’s revised App Review Guidelines added Guideline 4.7, allowing retro game-console and PC emulator apps to offer downloadable games, subject to Apple’s privacy, moderation, age-rating, metadata and legal requirements. The policy makes developers responsible for software offered through their apps. It is an App Store rule—not a blanket authorization to download copyrighted ROMs or disc images. Copyright law and the legality of making or using a backup vary by jurisdiction.
The change made ordinary App Store installation possible, but it did not create a licensed archive of older games.

- April 5, 2024: Apple’s revised emulator language became public.
- May 15, 2024: PPSSPP was approved for the iOS App Store after years of unofficial iOS distribution. PPSSPP’s announcement records the approval and its initial feature limits.
- May 15, 2024: RetroArch became available worldwide on the App Store, according to Libretro’s iOS guide.
- June 4, 2024: PPSSPP said its free iOS version had returned after a temporary approval problem. PPSSPP’s update describes that return.
PPSSPP and RetroArch are different kinds of apps

PPSSPP: the straightforward PSP option
The U.S. App Store lists PPSSPP – PSP emulator as a free iPhone and iPad app from Henrik Rydgård/Millionth Line AB. The listing checked for this article shows version 1.20.4, requires iOS or iPadOS 13 or later, and offers an optional PPSSPP Gold in-app purchase listed at $3.99 in the U.S. (checked August 18, 2026). Gold supports development; it does not add a commercial game library.

PPSSPP supports user-provided PSP software and homebrew. Its documentation lists ISO, CSO and CHD files. The app does not supply commercial games. See the App Store listing and iOS support documentation for current compatibility details.
Installing and transferring PSP files
- Open the App Store and search for PPSSPP – PSP emulator. Verify the developer before installing.
- Open PPSSPP once, then obtain game files you are legally entitled to use, or homebrew.
- On a Mac, connect the device by USB and use Finder’s file-sharing view. On Windows, use Apple’s Apple Devices app.
- With PPSSPP 1.20 or later, you can also open the Upload Files control in the Games tab and transfer files over the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Open the Games tab, browse to the transferred file and launch it. A Bluetooth or wired controller is optional.
RetroArch: one app, many systems
RetroArch’s App Store listing describes a free, ad-free, open-source application for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. It loads individual libretro cores rather than emulating one console itself. The listed systems include PSP, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Sega systems, Atari platforms, arcade systems and DOS or PC-related cores. Availability and performance can differ by Apple platform and build.
RetroArch also provides save states, netplay, controller support, per-game remapping, cheats, shaders, fast-forward, rewind, RetroAchievements, artwork and custom overlays. Those options are powerful, but they make first-time setup less direct than PPSSPP.

Installing the App Store build
- Install RetroArch from the App Store and launch it once.
- In Apple’s Files app, open Browse → On My iPhone or On My iPad → RetroArch.
- Copy compatible game files into the RetroArch folder. Use files you are legally entitled to possess and use.
- In RetroArch, choose Load Content → Open…, select the file and choose an appropriate core when prompted.
- For a cleaner first run, open Online Updater and select Update Core Info Files, Update Assets, Update Databases, Update Overlays and Update GLSL Shaders as needed.
Libretro documents separate iOS and tvOS behavior. iPhone uses the GLUI touch interface; iPad versions after 1.19.1 default to Ozone. On Apple TV, an MFi-compatible controller is the practical choice; the Siri Remote is only a basic directional interface.
Games are not included
Installing either emulator does not install PSP games or other commercial software. PPSSPP explicitly says no games are included and directs users toward their own dumps or homebrew. Its documented formats—ISO, CSO and CHD—describe how compatible files are packaged, not where to obtain them.
Use files you are legally entitled to possess and use. Apple’s permission for emulator apps to offer downloads does not decide whether a particular copyrighted download, backup or distribution is lawful in your country. Avoid unofficial ROM sites: they can create copyright, malware and account-security risks.

JIT is the main App Store limitation
Just-in-time compilation generates machine code while an emulator runs. iOS does not permit the normal JIT approach in these App Store builds.

The original App Store announcement listed the JIT recompiler as unsupported and avoided an absolute promise about every game or device.
RetroArch’s documentation is more cautious: JIT improves some cores, including its PPSSPP core, and other cores may not work as intended without it. The App Store version does not enable JIT. Therefore, a missing or poorly performing core is not proof that the game file is bad; it may reflect the platform build or JIT requirement.

Other limitations to expect
PPSSPP
- No JIT, camera input or microphone support in the documented iOS build.
- Device rotation was fixed in version 1.20; the iOS documentation also notes restored UI keyboard input and RetroAchievements support.
- Performance remains device- and game-dependent, even though modern devices generally handle PSP software well.
RetroArch
- The App Store build can contain fewer cores than sideloaded builds.
- Core-specific compatibility, graphics settings and file requirements vary.
- Touch interfaces and playlist management can take more adjustment than PPSSPP.
- On tvOS, storage is treated as cache-like. Libretro warns that the operating system may reclaim it, potentially deleting saves and state files.
Sideloaded builds may add JIT or cores, but they require signing and refresh steps, can expire, and are more complicated. Libretro also notes that RetroArch is not affiliated with AltStore or iOS App Signer.
Common problems and fixes
No games appear
- Confirm that files are stored locally, not merely cloud placeholders.
- Check the extension and format; compressed archives or unsupported files may not load.
- For PPSSPP, use the Games tab or its Wi‑Fi Upload Files function.
- For RetroArch, use Load Content → Open… and select the actual file location.
- Remember that neither app bundles commercial games.
A RetroArch core is missing
The core may not be distributed in the App Store build, may be unavailable for that platform or may need JIT. Check Libretro’s official iOS/tvOS documentation before considering a more complex sideloading route.
A game is slow or crashes
Possible causes include JIT restrictions, a core-specific bug, a damaged dump, unsuitable video synchronization or renderer settings, thermal throttling and device age. Try the same PSP file in PPSSPP if it was first tested in RetroArch, and prefer a stable release over a nightly build.

Touch controls are uncomfortable
Use landscape orientation, customize the on-screen layout and consider an MFi, Bluetooth or wired controller. RetroArch advertises controller support and configurable remapping; PPSSPP provides PSP-focused control settings.
Which app should you choose?
- Choose PPSSPP if PSP is your main interest, you want minimal setup or you prefer console-specific documentation and controls.
- Choose RetroArch if you want multiple systems, shaders, playlists, netplay, cheats and extensive remapping, and you are comfortable selecting cores.
- Use both if you want PPSSPP’s focused PSP experience alongside RetroArch for other consoles.
- For Apple TV, RetroArch is the app in this comparison with an explicit Apple TV listing. Check controller and core support for the specific tvOS version.
What to buy, if anything
The emulators themselves do not require paid game subscriptions. An accessory may matter more than an upgrade: an iPhone-mounted controller suits mobile play, while a Bluetooth controller is more practical for iPad, Mac or Apple TV. A USB-C hub or flash drive can simplify moving a large library on compatible devices. PPSSPP Gold, listed at $3.99 in the U.S. when checked, is an optional way to support development—not a purchase of games.
The bottom line
Apple’s 2024 policy change made legal, ordinary App Store distribution possible for PPSSPP and RetroArch. In 2026, the practical choice is clear: PPSSPP is the simpler PSP specialist, while RetroArch is the broader but more technical multi-system platform. Install either from the App Store, supply your own lawful game files, and expect JIT and platform-specific limits rather than assuming every core or game behaves like it does on a PC.
