“The program can’t start because pqfeatur.dll is missing from your computer.” The pqfeatur.dll error usually points to an incomplete or damaged installation of an old PowerQuest application, not a broken Windows component.
The safest fix is to identify the program that called the DLL, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original CD, ISO, backup, or legitimate installation media. Do not download pqfeatur.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into a Windows system folder.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you were doing when the error appeared:
- The error appears while installing or launching PartitionMagic or BootMagic: repair or reinstall that original PowerQuest installation.
- The error appears during Symantec System Recovery setup: restart the installer from complete, trusted installation media and check whether antivirus removed a temporary setup file.
- The error appeared after antivirus detected or quarantined a file: inspect quarantine history before restoring anything.
- The error names another Microsoft runtime, such as
MSVCP,VCRUNTIME, orapi-ms-win-crt: repair the named runtime, notpqfeatur.dll. - The error appears after moving an old application to Windows 10 or Windows 11: the application may be incompatible with the operating system. Restoring the DLL will not make obsolete disk-management software safe to use.
- The error appears in several unrelated programs: check Windows for broader corruption with DISM and SFC, but treat that as a secondary check.
- You no longer use the old program: uninstall it rather than rebuilding its obsolete installation.
What is pqfeatur.dll
pqfeatur.dll is identified as PowerQuest Install Utility, an application DLL associated with PowerQuest Corporation. It is a private component of legacy third-party software, not a normal Windows file.

The strongest product association is with the setup files for PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0, particularly the BootMagic setup area. Some later Symantec installation material also shows PqFeatur.dll being extracted during setup, but that does not prove every copy came from the same Symantec product.
The known file is a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit application normally loads its private DLL from the application directory or the installer’s temporary working directory. That does not mean you should copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not provide pqfeatur.dll through Windows Update, DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a Visual C++ Redistributable. The file belongs to the program that installed it.
Why the error appears during setup
Many older installers unpack helper DLLs into a temporary directory before displaying the main installation interface. pqfeatur.dll may be needed by that setup process rather than by the finished application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That creates several common failure points:
- The CD, ISO, or archive is incomplete.
- A scratched disc prevents one file from being read.
- An antivirus product removes an old installer component.
- The temporary extraction process fails.
- The application is being run from a copied folder without its complete installer structure.
- The old installer expects Windows behavior that is no longer available.
- A different dependency is missing, even though the message names
pqfeatur.dll.
“Specified module could not be found” is especially ambiguous. It can mean that pqfeatur.dll is absent, or that Windows found it but could not load one of its dependencies. Record the full error and the executable that generated it before changing files.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent program
This is the most likely solution.
If the program is already installed
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for PartitionMagic, BootMagic, Drive Image, Symantec System Recovery, or the other legacy program that produced the message.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if that option exists.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the damaged application and restart the computer. Then reinstall it from the original installation CD, a complete ISO, or a verified backup that you are authorized to use.
Do not copy a single DLL into the application folder as a substitute for reinstalling. The installer may also need configuration files, registry entries, services, licensing components, and additional dependencies.
If the error appears while installing
- Close the error window.
- Remove any incomplete copy of the installer.
- If you are using a CD, inspect it for scratches and clean it carefully.
- If you are using an ISO or archive, make sure it completed downloading or copying.
- Copy the complete installer to a local folder such as
C:LegacySetup. - Right-click the setup executable and select Properties.
- If you see an Unblock checkbox, select it and choose Apply.
- Right-click the setup executable again and choose Run as administrator.
- If the installer requests the original disc, insert the disc or mount the ISO instead of browsing to a random extracted DLL.
- Run the setup again.
If restarting setup restores the missing file to its temporary directory, the problem was probably a failed extraction or incomplete installation media. If the same file disappears immediately, check antivirus history before trying again.

The fix worked when:
- Setup completes without naming
pqfeatur.dll. - The application opens without the missing-file message.
- The program’s own files are present in its normal installation directory.
- The error does not return after a restart.
If the application installs but fails immediately on Windows 11 or Windows 10, the DLL may be present and the remaining problem may be operating-system incompatibility.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Old installers often contain unsigned components and may be extracted into temporary folders. Security software can quarantine a file even when the original installer is legitimate. No specific pqfeatur.dll false-positive incident is established, so treat this as a possibility to investigate, not proof that antivirus made a mistake.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries created around the time of the error.
- Expand any entry that references
pqfeatur.dll, the legacy installer, or its temporary extraction folder. - Note the detection name and original file path.
- Restore the file only if you trust the original installation media and recognize the parent application.
- Rerun the complete repair or installation.
If another antivirus program is installed, open its quarantine or protection-history screen instead. Do not disable protection permanently just to force an old installer to run. If the detection seems incorrect, submit the original file to the security vendor for analysis and keep the installer isolated until you receive a result.
After restoring a quarantined file, reinstall or repair the parent program. A restored temporary DLL is not a complete installation.

A genuine application DLL should normally appear beside the executable or within the installer’s own directory structure. A file with the same name in an unexpected location deserves extra scrutiny.
- Right-click the program shortcut and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Check the Target field to identify the executable.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Look for the application’s own
pqfeatur.dll, rather than searching every Windows folder. - Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Review the Details tab for its description and company information.
- Select the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Scan the file with current security software.
The known file is 32-bit. That is normal for an old PowerQuest program, including when the program is running on 64-bit Windows.
Do not place it in both system directories:
C:WindowsSystem32is the standard system directory on 64-bit Windows, despite its historical name.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows components on 64-bit Windows.- Neither directory is the correct general-purpose home for a private application DLL.
Putting the file in a system directory can create version conflicts and can make it harder to determine which application actually loaded it.
Fix 4: Run the installer with compatibility settings
Compatibility settings may help an old setup program start, but they cannot turn obsolete partition software into modern, supported software.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click the original setup executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the installer documentation or your original environment requires it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Run setup from complete original media.
If the program manages partitions or boot records, back up important data before using it. A compatibility mode setting does not remove the risk of using an old disk utility on a modern system disk.
PartitionMagic is discontinued legacy software and is not a reliable choice for managing a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. If the application is no longer required, uninstall it. If it is required for an old project, use it inside an appropriately isolated legacy Windows virtual machine with a verified backup of the virtual disk or test data.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Because pqfeatur.dll is not a Windows component, DISM and SFC usually will not restore it. Use these commands when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or several unrelated system errors.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the original application repair or installation again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a replacement for recovering the complete PowerQuest installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepeatedly running SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is a damaged application package. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds and performs repairs through the full version, but reinstalling the PowerQuest application remains the definitive fix when that application is the source of the error.
Fix 6: Install only a dependency that the error actually names
Do not install random runtimes because a DLL error appeared. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the complete message identifies it.
Examples include:
MSVCP*.dllorMSVCR*.dll: a Visual C++ runtime may be involved.VCRUNTIME*.dll: a Visual C++ runtime may be involved.api-ms-win-crt-*.dll: the Universal CRT or related Windows components may be involved.- A DirectX file: investigate the specific DirectX dependency.
- A .NET assembly: repair or enable the named .NET component.
There is no verified Microsoft package called a pqfeatur.dll runtime. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because pqfeatur.dll is missing is not a reliable repair.
If you install a runtime, use Microsoft’s official distribution and match the application’s requirements. A 32-bit legacy application may require the 32-bit runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Fix 7: Do not register pqfeatur.dll routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly used for ActiveX controls and certain COM components, not for every DLL.
There is no reliable evidence that pqfeatur.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running this command as a routine fix is therefore inappropriate:
regsvr32 pqfeatur.dll
If a trusted application’s documentation specifically tells you to register this file, use the exact path and architecture requested by that application. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the parent program.
A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing. It may simply mean the file was never designed to be registered.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the error points to a driver
A graphics, chipset, storage, or controller driver is not a first-line fix for a missing PowerQuest installer DLL. Update drivers when Device Manager shows a warning, the application reports a driver problem, or the complete error names a hardware component.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Retry the parent application.
Do not remove storage drivers while using an old partition tool unless you know exactly which controller is affected. Make a backup first.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows support, and several device revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater can show outdated drivers in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the legacy application that owns pqfeatur.dll.
Fix 9: Use a safer environment for incompatible software
If reinstalling from complete media succeeds but the application still fails on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the problem may be compatibility rather than the DLL.
Use this approach:
- Stop using the legacy disk utility on your active system disk.
- Confirm that important files have a verified backup.
- If the old program is essential, run it in an isolated virtual machine using a compatible legacy Windows installation.
- Keep the virtual machine disconnected from unnecessary networks.
- Work only on a test disk or virtual disk when possible.
- If the program is not essential, uninstall it and use a current partition-management application instead.
A virtual machine can preserve access to an old workflow, but it does not make unsupported software secure or suitable for direct manipulation of a modern physical disk.
Should you download pqfeatur.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a different historical build. Even a clean replacement may not fix the missing dependency, installer registration, permissions, or compatibility problem that caused the error.
Use these sources instead:
- The original PowerQuest, Symantec, or other parent-program installation media you legally possess.
- A verified backup of that media.
- The application’s repair option.
- A current installer supplied by the application’s legitimate publisher, when one exists.
No current Microsoft package is known to provide this private PowerQuest DLL.

This information distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency and prevents unnecessary system-folder changes.
FAQ
Is pqfeatur.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a private application DLL identified as PowerQuest Install Utility.
Which program normally uses it?
The strongest association is with PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0 and BootMagic setup files. Some Symantec installation material also references the file, but the exact parent program must be confirmed from the executable and installation path.
Is pqfeatur.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The known file is a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That is normal for a legacy 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Put the complete application back through repair or reinstallation. Copying a private DLL into Windows system directories can cause conflicts and does not repair the parent program.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Normally, no. They repair protected Windows components, not private PowerQuest files.
Should I use regsvr32?
Not routinely. Use it only when trusted documentation confirms that the DLL is a self-registering component and provides the correct command.
Why does the error appear only during installation?
The installer may extract pqfeatur.dll to a temporary directory and use it as a setup helper. Incomplete media, antivirus quarantine, or failed extraction can interrupt that process.
Can antivirus quarantine cause this error?
Yes, it is a plausible cause, especially for an old installer component. Check protection history and restore a file only when the original media and parent application are trusted.
Does restoring the DLL make PartitionMagic compatible with Windows 11?
No. It only restores one file. Legacy partition software can still fail because of unsupported operating-system behavior, storage hardware, boot configuration, or security restrictions.
What is the safest final fix?
Identify the calling PowerQuest or Symantec program, repair or reinstall it from complete legitimate media, and avoid downloading an isolated DLL. If the application is obsolete, uninstall it or run it only in an isolated compatible environment.
