Start with this diagnostic checklist
pr_remote.dll is a Kaspersky application file, not a normal Windows component. If Windows reports that pr_remote.dll is missing, first establish:
- Which Kaspersky product or older application is showing the error
- Whether the error appears during startup, after an update, or after an uninstall or reinstall
- Whether the installed application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message names
pr_remote.dllexactly, or the similarly namedprremote.dll - Whether the file is present in the Kaspersky installation directory
- Whether Kaspersky placed it in Quarantine or Backup
The safest first repair is to restore or reinstall the Kaspersky product that originally supplied the component. Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website.
What pr_remote.dll belongs to
The supplied file description identifies pr_remote.dll as PR_REMOTE, a component of Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal developed by Kaspersky Labs. That product name refers to a historical Kaspersky release, not a current Windows component.
There is an important spelling issue. Kaspersky inventories and SDK documentation commonly list prremote.dll, without the underscore. Historical public records associate the underscored pr_remote.dll spelling with an older Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal release. These names should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.

#1 Best Overall
Kaspersky has used similarly named components across older consumer products, Endpoint Security, Security Center plug-ins, and SDK-based installations. File sizes, architecture, paths, and build details vary by product. There is no single universal version of this DLL that is safe to copy into every Kaspersky installation.
A legitimate copy should normally be under a Kaspersky program directory. It should not normally be copied into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A temporary download folder
- Another application’s installation directory
Fix 1: Check Kaspersky Quarantine or Backup
A damaged update, security detection, or cleanup operation may have removed the component. Check Kaspersky before reinstalling anything.
- Open the Kaspersky application from the Start menu or notification area.
- Open More tools, Security, or the section containing protection utilities. Menu names vary between releases.
- Open Quarantine or Backup.
- Look for
pr_remote.dlland also search forprremote.dll. - Select the entry and review its detection name, original path, and status.
- Do not restore it merely because an application needs the file.
- Restore it only if the entry clearly belongs to the installed Kaspersky product and its signature and location can be validated.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Kaspersky warns that restoring a quarantined file can reintroduce a threat. If the file was detected as malicious, has an unexpected original path, or cannot be verified, leave it quarantined and reinstall Kaspersky from its official installer instead.

If the file returns to Quarantine immediately after restoration, do not keep restoring it. Check the detection details, run a full or offline security scan, and contact Kaspersky support if the detection appears to be a false positive.
Fix 2: Verify the path and digital signature
A filename by itself does not prove that a DLL is genuine. Verify the copy before allowing an application to use it.
Check the installation path
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Search the Kaspersky installation directory, usually under Program Files or Program Files (x86).
- Search for both
pr_remote.dllandprremote.dll. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Confirm that the file is inside the Kaspersky product directory.
- Treat a copy found in Downloads, Temp, an unrelated application folder, or a random Windows directory as suspicious.
The exact folder depends on the Kaspersky product and architecture. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit Kaspersky component may still be installed below Program Files (x86).
Check the signature
- Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the available signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
- Review the signer and certificate details.
- On the General tab, compare the file location with the installed Kaspersky product.
A missing or invalid signature does not prove malware by itself, particularly with very old software, but it is a reason not to restore or copy the file manually.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Record a hash for support
If Kaspersky support or an administrator asks for a hash:
- Right-click the Start button and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run the command below, replacing the path with the actual file path:
Get-FileHash "C:PathTopr_remote.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
- Save the displayed hash and the complete file path.
- Compare it only with a value supplied for the same Kaspersky product and build.
Do not assume that a matching filename, file size, or hash found in an unrelated catalog is appropriate for your installation.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall Kaspersky
If the file is absent, corrupted, unsigned, or repeatedly fails to load, reinstall the exact Kaspersky product that needs it. This restores the component together with its manifest, dependencies, services, and registry configuration.
Before removing Kaspersky
- Save any activation or subscription information you are allowed to retain.
- Note the exact Kaspersky product name and edition.
- If this is an enterprise computer, check whether Kaspersky Security Center controls the installation.
- Do not delete the Kaspersky folder manually.
- Download the correct installer from Kaspersky’s official Windows downloads page or obtain it from your organization’s approved software distribution.
Remove the damaged installation
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the Kaspersky product.
- Select the three-dot menu or the product entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Kaspersky Setup and Removal Wizard.
- Choose removal of the application when prompted.
- Restart Windows, even if the wizard does not require it.
If the normal uninstall fails, use Kaspersky’s official Setup and Removal Wizard. Do not use a generic registry cleaner to force the removal.
Install the correct product
- Start Windows after the restart.
- Run the Kaspersky installer as an administrator.
- Confirm that the product name and edition match the application that originally produced the error.
- Accept the license and installation prompts.
- Allow the installer to complete without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Update Kaspersky through its normal update mechanism.
- Start the affected application and check whether the loader error has disappeared.
If the original program was a historical Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal release, a current Kaspersky installer may not be a compatible replacement for the old application that called it. In that situation, identify the original product and use an authentic installer or contact Kaspersky support rather than mixing files from different releases.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency or architecture mismatch
Windows can display “The specified module could not be found” even when the named DLL exists. The missing item may be a dependency required by that DLL, or Windows may be trying to load a DLL with the wrong architecture.
Check these points:
- A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit components.
- A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components.
- A 32-bit Kaspersky installation can exist on 64-bit Windows.
pr_remote.dllandprremote.dllmay belong to different product generations.- A DLL copied from another Kaspersky build may load incorrectly or fail because its supporting files differ.
Use the Kaspersky installer rather than replacing individual files. Review the application and Kaspersky installation logs for the first DLL named in the failure. If the message changes and identifies another Kaspersky DLL, repair the complete installation rather than downloading that second file.
If the installer reports a missing Microsoft runtime, use the runtime package named by the installer or application vendor. There is no verified Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX package specifically responsible for pr_remote.dll.
Fix 5: Run Windows component repair only when Windows is also damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not directly restore a private Kaspersky DLL, so use them when other Windows features are failing, system files are damaged, or Windows reports broader corruption.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Kaspersky again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, and repeat the sequence once. If the commands complete successfully but Kaspersky still reports the DLL error, reinstall Kaspersky rather than repeating SFC and DISM indefinitely.
When manually tracking corrupted Windows components means hunting through logs and guessing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling Kaspersky remains the definitive fix for a missing private Kaspersky DLL.
Fix 6: Update Windows and relevant software
Install updates when the failure began after a Windows update, application update, or interrupted restart.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Kaspersky and apply its own available updates.
- Test the application again.
Do not treat Windows Update as a replacement for repairing Kaspersky. It may correct a system dependency, but it will not normally supply a Kaspersky-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem
pr_remote.dll is not a device driver. Device Manager is therefore not a primary repair route for this error. Use it only if the failure appears alongside display, storage, network, or other hardware problems.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the wider failure.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device error.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Finding and installing the correct driver manually can involve checking hardware identifiers, architecture, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation is performed by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the Kaspersky product that owns this DLL.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; a private runtime or scanning-engine library normally does not need registration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 pr_remote.dll
It may produce an error saying that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That message does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It usually means the file is not a self-registering component.
Use regsvr32 only if Kaspersky’s documentation or support specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL.
Avoid isolated DLL downloads
Downloading pr_remote.dll or prremote.dll from an unknown DLL site creates several risks:
- The file may contain malware or tampering.
- It may belong to the wrong Kaspersky product.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may require dependencies that are still missing.
- Its filename may not match the DLL expected by the calling executable.
- Copying it into a system folder can create a different application failure.
The safe sources are the Kaspersky installer for the correct product, an approved enterprise software distribution, or Kaspersky support. Restore from Quarantine only after checking the detection, path, and signature.
If the file keeps disappearing
If reinstalling succeeds but the DLL disappears again:
- Open Kaspersky Quarantine or Backup and inspect the latest detection.
- Check whether another antivirus product or cleanup utility is removing it.
- Review the file’s path and digital signature.
- Run a full or offline security scan if the file is unsigned, repeatedly replaced, or located outside Kaspersky’s directory.
- Check the disk for errors if other files are also vanishing or becoming corrupted.
- On an enterprise computer, ask the Kaspersky Security Center administrator to review policy and quarantine events.
- Reinstall Kaspersky from a clean, approved installer after investigating the cause.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion for an unverified DLL.
Best Value
When to contact Kaspersky support
Contact Kaspersky support when:
- The official installer fails to restore the component.
- The product is managed by Kaspersky Security Center.
- Quarantine repeatedly removes a valid, signed file.
- The installer reports an undocumented dependency or architecture error.
- The exact product edition is historical and no compatible installer is available.
- A clean reinstall produces a different missing Kaspersky DLL.
Provide the product name, Windows edition, exact error text, file path, digital-signature result, installer logs, and SHA-256 hash when requested. Do not email or upload the DLL to an unapproved service.
FAQ
Is pr_remote.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence places the file with Kaspersky software. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs pr_remote.dll the same as prremote.dll?
Not automatically. Kaspersky documentation more commonly lists prremote.dll, while historical records use pr_remote.dll. Check the calling executable, product version, architecture, and installation manifest before treating them as equivalent.
Which Kaspersky product installed it?
The supplied file description identifies Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal. Kaspersky’s broader inventories also document the no-underscore prremote.dll in Endpoint Security, Security Center components, older products, and SDK-related software.
Can I copy the DLL from another computer?
No, not as a general repair. The other computer may have a different product, build, architecture, dependencies, or security status. Reinstall the correct Kaspersky product instead.
Should I run SFC and DISM first?
Only when there are signs of broader Windows corruption. They repair Windows components, not the missing Kaspersky DLL itself. For this error, Kaspersky repair or reinstallation is the primary fix.

A required dependency may be missing, or the DLL may be incompatible with the application’s architecture. Reinstall the complete Kaspersky product and inspect the first dependency named in the logs.
Does regsvr32 repair this file?
Usually no. It applies to self-registering DLLs with the required registration entry point, not every DLL that Windows loads.
What if the file was quarantined?
Review the detection and original path first. Restore only after validating the file. If the detection is credible or the file is unsigned, leave it quarantined and reinstall Kaspersky from an official source.
