Spoilers: Preceptor Seluvis is a servant of Ranni in Elden Ring. His quest gives you a potion intended for Nepheli Loux, but you can instead give it to the Dung Eater or have Gideon Ofnir dispose of it. Giving the potion to either character turns that character into a puppet and sacrifices their normal quest outcome; Gideon’s option avoids converting either target.

Who is Preceptor Seluvis?

Seluvis is one of Ranni’s associated servants. After meeting Ranni and speaking with the figures connected to her in the Three Sisters area of Liurnia, visit Seluvis at his rise. He asks you to deliver Seluvis’s Potion to Nepheli Loux. The potion’s description likewise instructs you to find Nepheli and make sure she drinks it.

That instruction is not the only possible solution. The potion is an optional decision point, and the recipient determines which quest content you preserve or sacrifice.

What should you do with Seluvis’s Potion?

Recipient Immediate result Effect on the recipient’s quest Puppet Spirit Ash access Reversible?
Nepheli Loux Nepheli becomes one of Seluvis’s puppets. Her own quest route ends. Yes, this route provides a puppet. Do not assume a cure is available; the cited guides do not establish one.
Dung Eater The Dung Eater becomes a puppet. His normal quest resolution is sacrificed. Yes, this route provides a puppet. Do not assume a cure is available; the cited guides do not establish one.
Gideon Ofnir Gideon disposes of the potion. Neither Nepheli nor the Dung Eater is converted by this choice. No puppet is created from the potion. This is the preservation route, because it avoids converting either target.

If you want Nepheli’s best outcome

Do not give the potion to Nepheli. Take it to Gideon at Roundtable Hold and let him dispose of it. Giving it to Nepheli turns her into a puppet and ends her quest path.

If you want the Dung Eater Puppet

Progress the Dung Eater’s circumstances far enough to access him in his cell, then administer Seluvis’s Potion there. This converts him into a puppet instead of allowing his normal quest outcome. The choice trades his quest resolution for access to his puppet Spirit Ash.

If you want neither character converted

Show the potion to Gideon at Roundtable Hold. His disposal route is the safest choice for preserving both characters’ quest possibilities, although it does not grant a potion-based puppet.

How Seluvis’s puppet shop works

Seluvis’s wider quest reveals a hidden collection of puppets. He can offer puppet Spirit Ashes in exchange for Starlight Shards. These purchases are separate from the potion’s three recipient choices, so inspect his dialogue and shop before advancing Ranni’s story.

The practical trade-off is straightforward: a puppet purchase gives you a summon, while converting Nepheli or the Dung Eater gives you that character’s puppet at the cost of the character’s ordinary quest route.

The Amber Starlight and Amber Draught branch

Later, Seluvis asks you to obtain Amber Starlight and prepares an Amber Draught for Ranni. This is an attempted betrayal: giving Ranni the draught can make her turn against you and disrupt her quest. It is an optional Seluvis branch, not a required step for completing Ranni’s story.

Do not give Ranni the Amber Draught if you intend to continue her quest normally. Treat the request as a deliberate trap rather than as a routine delivery.

When to complete Seluvis’s quest

Seluvis’s availability and rewards are tied to Ranni’s progression. His quest rewards can be permanently lost as Ranni’s story advances, and the Amber Draught branch can fail Ranni’s quest. Complete the Seluvis dialogue, desired puppet purchases, and other rewards before advancing past the Fingerslayer Blade milestone.

Because the exact conditions for every reward branch are not fully documented in primary game material, do not rely on a blanket guarantee that every item remains obtainable after a particular sequence. If a Seluvis reward matters to your build, collect it before pushing Ranni’s quest onward.

A safe decision path

  1. Meet Ranni and her associated servants in the Three Sisters, then speak with Seluvis at his rise.
  2. Accept Seluvis’s Potion and decide whether your priority is Nepheli’s quest, the Dung Eater Puppet, or preserving both quest routes.
  3. For preservation, take the potion to Gideon at Roundtable Hold and let him dispose of it.
  4. For the Dung Eater Puppet, progress access to the Dung Eater’s cell and administer the potion there instead.
  5. Before advancing Ranni’s story beyond the Fingerslayer Blade milestone, return to Seluvis for dialogue, Starlight Shard puppet purchases, and any rewards you want.
  6. Reject the Amber Draught delivery to Ranni if you want to avoid disrupting her quest.

What each choice costs

  • Nepheli route: you gain her puppet but lose her own quest path.
  • Dung Eater route: you gain his puppet but lose his normal quest resolution.
  • Gideon route: you gain no potion-created puppet, but avoid converting either character.
  • Amber Draught: you pursue Seluvis’s betrayal at the risk of Ranni’s quest and do not need this branch to complete her story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give Seluvis’s Potion to Nepheli?

Yes, but Nepheli becomes a puppet and her own quest path ends. Give the potion to Gideon instead if you want to preserve her route.

Can I give Seluvis’s Potion to the Dung Eater?

Yes. After progressing the Dung Eater’s circumstances and reaching him in his cell, administer the potion to obtain his puppet, but this sacrifices his normal quest outcome.

How do I get the Dung Eater Puppet?

Progress the Dung Eater’s quest until you can access him in his cell, then use Seluvis’s Potion on him. The conversion replaces his ordinary quest resolution.

Does Seluvis’s quest affect Ranni?

Yes. Giving Ranni the Amber Draught exposes Seluvis’s betrayal and can disrupt Ranni’s quest. The draught is optional; do not use it if you want her story to continue normally.

The Bottom Line

For the least damaging outcome, give Seluvis’s Potion to Gideon. Use it on Nepheli or the Dung Eater only if you specifically want that character’s puppet and accept losing the character’s normal quest route. Finish Seluvis’s desired dialogue and rewards before passing the Fingerslayer Blade milestone, and do not give Ranni the Amber Draught if you are pursuing her quest.
