printconfig.dll is a genuine Windows printer-driver component, not a game DLL or a Visual C++ runtime. If printconfig.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or triggers error 0x8007007e, repair the affected printer driver instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which printer is selected when the error appears
- Which program triggers it, such as Edge, Photos, Mail, OneNote, or a desktop application
- The exact error text and code
- Whether every program fails to print or only one application
- Whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit
- The paths where Windows finds
PrintConfig.dll, if any
Open Settings > System > About and check System type. Most current PCs use 64-bit Windows, but the driver itself may include a 32-bit component for compatibility.
If only a Microsoft Store-style application fails while desktop applications print normally, the printer configuration component is a strong suspect. If every application fails, also investigate the print spooler, printer connection, port, and the complete driver package.
What printconfig.dll does
Microsoft describes PrintConfig.dll as the common configuration module for Windows v4 printer drivers. It replaced configuration functionality previously supplied by components such as UnidrvUI and PS5UI. All v4 print drivers use the same configuration binary. The file is installed as part of a printer-driver package. It is associated with Windows printing components, including the Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver and the prnms003.inf package. It is not supplied by DirectX, .NET, Visual C++ Redistributables, or a particular game.
A normal 64-bit installation may contain a copy in one of these driver locations:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversx643PrintConfig.dll
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositoryprnms003.inf_amd64_<hash>amd64PrintConfig.dll
A 32-bit driver environment may use:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversW32X863PrintConfig.dll
Some systems also retain an older spool-driver directory:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversx64old3PrintConfig.dll
The exact location varies with the Windows build, printer-driver model, architecture, and whether the package is staged in the Driver Store. Do not assume that C:WindowsSystem32PrintConfig.dll or C:WindowsSysWOW64PrintConfig.dll is the correct location.
Fix 1: Update Windows and the printer driver
This is the safest first repair because Windows reinstalls the complete driver package instead of replacing one loose file.
Install Windows updates
- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if that section appears.
- Install the relevant printer driver update.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft distributes the applicable Windows component through servicing and printer-driver packages. There is no universally correct current version of PrintConfig.dll to download separately.
Update through Device Manager
If Windows Update does not offer a driver update:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the computer after the installation completes.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, continue with a full removal and reinstallation rather than copying a DLL manually.
When several printer packages are installed, identifying the right model and architecture by hand can mean checking multiple driver folders and repeating Windows Update. A missing PrintConfig.dll is often a symptom of an incomplete or damaged printer-driver installation. Removing the printer and adding it again restores the associated INF, catalog, GPD, XML, registry, and spool-driver state.

- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- Select Add device and complete the setup.
- Run Windows Update again.
Microsoft’s printer-driver installation guidance recommends Windows Update for current drivers. If Windows cannot find a suitable package, obtain the exact model’s driver from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid a generic package when the manufacturer provides a model-specific Windows 11 or Windows 10 driver.
Test by printing a Windows test page:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
If the test page prints, try the application that originally failed. If the test page fails too, the problem is broader than one Store application and may involve the spooler, port, connection, or driver package.
Fix 3: Check the active driver folders
Use File Explorer to inspect the locations rather than searching the entire disk and replacing every duplicate.
Check these folders on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
%windir%System32spooldriversx64old3
%windir%System32DriverStoreFileRepository
For a 32-bit driver environment, also check:
%windir%System32spooldriversW32X863
A file in the Driver Store is not automatically the file that belongs in the active spool directory. The Driver Store contains staged packages, while the spool directory contains files used by an installed printer environment.
If the file is absent from both the active spool directory and the relevant Driver Store package, reinstall the printer driver. Do not download a standalone copy.
Targeted x64old workaround
Brother documents 0x8007007e cases where a matching file remains in x64old3 after the active folder has changed. This is a targeted workaround, not the normal repair.
First open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
net stop spooler
copy "%windir%System32spooldriversx64old3PrintConfig.dll" "%windir%System32spooldriversx643PrintConfig.dll"
net start spooler
Use the corresponding W32X86 paths if the affected driver is 32-bit. For example, the source and destination must both refer to the same 32-bit driver environment.
Only copy a file from the same computer or from a precisely matching Windows build and architecture. If the source file is missing, the copy command reports an error, or printing still fails, remove and reinstall the printer instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows components may be corrupted, updates failed, or several system files behave unexpectedly. Microsoft recommends DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete. Microsoft explains the process in its guide to using DISM and System File Checker.
A message that SFC repaired files is evidence of a successful system repair, but it does not prove that the printer-driver package is complete. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations and the printer still fails, return to the driver removal and reinstallation steps.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a printer component or one of its dependencies. Check before reinstalling the same package repeatedly.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
PrintConfig.dll, the printer driver, or its package. - Expand an entry to inspect its path and details.
Restore a quarantined file only when its path, digital signature, and printer-driver provenance are trustworthy. Otherwise remove the damaged package and reinstall it from Windows Update or the printer manufacturer. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again; see its Protection History guidance.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If printing worked until a driver or Windows update, System Restore may reverse the change.

- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and follow the prompts.
- Restart and test the printer.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.
What not to do
Do not use a DLL download site
Random DLL sites can provide malware, a wrong Windows build, a wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the printer package. Even an apparently valid copy may not restore the INF, catalog, registry entries, or related driver files.

Use Windows Update, the complete printer-driver package, or a matching copy from the same machine only.
Do not copy the file into an application folder
PrintConfig.dll is a printer-driver component. Copying it beside an executable, into a game directory, or blindly into System32 does not repair the print subsystem and can make diagnosis harder.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that register themselves through DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents that purpose in its regsvr32 command reference. Printer drivers are installed through printer INF packages and the Windows print subsystem, as described in Microsoft’s printer INF documentation.
A registration-related export on a particular build does not make this a supported general repair. regsvr32 PrintConfig.dll may fail because the file or a dependency is missing, and it does not reconstruct the printer package.
Do not replace every duplicate copy
Multiple copies can belong to different driver environments, architectures, or staged packages. Do not overwrite them all, and do not place an x86 file in an x64 folder.

The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the target file is missing or that a dependency cannot be loaded. It does not prove that PrintConfig.dll alone is responsible.

On supported Windows 11 systems, use current Windows Update and driver packages. Windows 10 reached the end of support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 instructions are mainly for existing installations and should use the latest package available for that system.

pnputil /enum-drivers /files
PnPUtil operates on INF-based driver packages, not loose DLL files. Do not use it to install or manipulate PrintConfig.dll by itself. Microsoft documents the syntax in its PnPUtil command reference.
What to collect if printing still fails
When contacting Microsoft or the printer manufacturer, provide:
- Windows edition and build
- Windows architecture
- Printer make and exact model
- Connection type, such as USB, network, or shared printer
- The application that fails
- Whether desktop applications can print
- The complete error message and code
- The paths where
PrintConfig.dllwas found or missing - Whether Windows Update, driver removal, DISM, SFC, quarantine review, and System Restore changed the result
That information distinguishes a missing driver component from a general spooler, port, connectivity, or application problem.
FAQ
Is printconfig.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows printing component used by v4 printer drivers. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime file.
Should I download the newest version of printconfig.dll?
No. There is no universal latest version that fits every Windows build and printer package. Let Windows servicing or the complete printer-driver package provide the matching file.
Why does printing fail only in Edge or Photos?
Microsoft Store-style applications can use printer configuration paths that expose a damaged or incomplete driver component while some desktop applications continue to print. This pattern is a useful clue, not proof that every case has the same cause.
