The company, founded by former Bungie CEO Harold Ryan, pitched a model built around supporting multiple game-development studios. Its portfolio and corporate context have since changed.
How much did ProbablyMonsters raise?
The figures reflect different reports and reporting dates. GeekWire’s June 30, 2021 article said an SEC filing indicated a $50 million tranche from a larger round; a company spokesperson declined to comment on that filing. On September 1, GeekWire reported a $200 million Series A, noting that much of the money came from earlier investors whose names were not disclosed. GamesBeat reported in 2022 that the Series A had closed at $250 million. The reviewed reports do not establish one regulator-confirmed total, so the figures should be attributed to the outlet and date rather than combined as independent rounds.
| Report | Figure | What it described |
|---|---|---|
| GeekWire, June 30, 2021 | $50 million | An SEC filing’s reported tranche from a larger round; the company declined to comment on the filing. |
| GeekWire, September 1, 2021 | $200 million | A reported Series A; GeekWire said much came from previous investors. |
| GamesBeat, 2022 | $250 million | Described the Series A as closed at this amount. |
Who founded ProbablyMonsters, and what was its studio model?
Harold Ryan, Bungie’s former CEO, founded ProbablyMonsters in 2016. The company’s October 2020 announcement described it as a “family of sustainable game studios”: development teams would make games, while a central company organization supported work such as funding, publishing negotiations, staffing, administration, and technology.
In that 2020 announcement, ProbablyMonsters said it had formed three studios—Firewalk, Cauldron, and an unnamed team working on a co-op role-playing game—and employed more than 150 people. Those are company-reported figures from that date, not a current studio roster or headcount. Ryan’s statement at the time was: “People-first game developers with a passion for their craft, who foster trust, respect, and approachability, belong at ProbablyMonsters.” The company announcement set out the approach as an organizational ambition, not a guarantee that every team or game would follow the same structure.

What changed after the funding announcement?
A significant change came in April 2023, when Sony Interactive Entertainment announced an agreement to acquire Firewalk Studios from ProbablyMonsters. That altered the early portfolio the company had presented in 2020. Current company pages foreground games and releases, but do not establish that the original three-studio lineup or its reported 2020 staffing level remains in place.
In an August 2025 interview, as reported by GamesRadar, Ryan reflected on the model: “I think that model is appropriate for some games, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for all games.” Sony’s acquisition announcement documents the Firewalk agreement; Ryan’s later comment is reported by GamesRadar.
