The right gear depended on whether the priority was surviving incoming damage, keeping threat, or assembling practical pieces with the least competition. The options below are historical Phase 2 recommendations, not current-endgame BIS: Blizzard’s phase announcement set the level cap at 40 and introduced Gnomeregan as a 10-player raid with six bosses and level-40 rewards.
What “BIS” means for a Phase 2 Protection Warrior
The Phase 2 guides make different assumptions about what a tank needs. Wowhead’s tank list favors many pieces also sought by DPS Warriors, reasoning that Gnomeregan’s incoming damage was manageable in pre-raid gear and that a dedicated mitigation set was generally unnecessary for its assumed content. Icy Veins, by contrast, separates defensive gear from damage-and-threat gear and argues that Phase 2 damage intake and easier threat management through group abilities make defensive gearing more viable.
That is a choice between encounter survival and healer comfort on one side, and damage and threat contribution on the other—not a dispute with one correct answer for every group. Item competition, your group’s damage output, your healers’ comfort, and your own gear availability also matter. Wowhead notes that Ring Runes can reduce the value of hit compared with the original Phase 2 weighting, so older rankings should not be read as timeless stat priorities.
Representative Phase 2 gear by slot
These are useful options from the guides, not a mandatory single set. “Raid” below means Gnomeregan; alternatives may come from dungeons, professions, world drops, quests, or PvP rewards. Pick pieces that fit your defensive or threat goal and that you can realistically obtain.

Choose defensive gear or threat gear
Favor defense when survival is the constraint
If incoming damage is stressing healers or causing deaths, use the defensive approach rather than chasing a damage-oriented list by default. Icy Veins explicitly presents defensive gear for Protection Warriors and names options such as Wirdal’s Hardened Core, Rune of Duty, and the Engineering shield. Avoid sacrificing survivability for damage where the encounter or your group makes survival the limiting factor.
Favor threat and damage when the group can support it
When survival is comfortable and threat is the bottleneck, the more damage-oriented pieces in Wowhead’s list may make sense. Gyromatic Experiment 420b is its general threat/damage trinket recommendation, while Hyperconductive Goldwrap is a damage option with an armor trade-off. Treat these as choices for a specific gearing goal, not automatic upgrades for every tank.

Plan around acquisition and competition
- Separate raid upgrades from pre-raid gearing. Gnomeregan supplies several listed pieces, while Scarlet Monastery and Razorfen Downs offer cited pre-raid options.
- Account for requirements. The helmet requires Blacksmithing, Goldwrap requires Engineering, Berserker Bracers require exalted Warsong Outriders or Silverwing Sentinels reputation, and PvP wrist options require the stated rank.
- Expect competition for raid loot. Drape of Dismantling and Hypercharged Gear of Devastation are specifically noted as contested; a less contested alternative may be more practical for your raid.
- Do not over-prioritize marginal upgrades. The listed necklace improvement is small, so devote early effort to larger gains or pieces that solve a real problem.
- Check the phase and tuning before relying on an old ranking. Wowhead identifies its list as patch 1.15.8, updated June 27, 2026; rune and balance changes can alter how its recommendations compare.
