Proton 9.0-1 was released on May 2, 2024, giving Steam’s Linux compatibility layer a Wine 9.0 base, updated graphics-translation components, broader game support, and fixes for several long-standing launch and rendering problems. It was a substantial compatibility release—but not a universal performance upgrade or a solution to every anti-cheat and launcher problem.

Because Proton 10 and later releases now exist, Proton 9.0 is best understood as a stable 2024 release that remains useful for particular games, especially when a newer branch introduces a regression.

What Proton 9.0 changed

Proton is Valve’s Steam compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. It combines Wine with Valve’s patches, Steam integration, and graphics and runtime components. A game running through Proton is still the Windows version; it is not a native Linux port.

Proton relies heavily on DXVK to translate Direct3D 9, 10, and 11 calls to Vulkan, and VKD3D-Proton to translate Direct3D 12. Proton 9.0 updated these components alongside its Wine 9.0 base and included numerous title-specific fixes.

The practical result was broader compatibility and better reliability for selected games. That does not automatically mean higher average frame rates. A release can be a major improvement because it makes a game launch, fixes missing video, restores controller input, prevents crashes, or corrects behavior on modern CPUs.

When Proton 9.0 launched

  • February 2024: Proton 9.0 entered beta testing.
  • April 26, 2024: Release Candidate 2 was reported during final testing.
  • May 2, 2024: Proton 9.0-1 became the first stable Proton 9 release.
  • Later in 2024: Proton 9.0-2, 9.0-3, and later point releases added further fixes.

When discussing a specific fix, the exact point release matters. Proton 9.0-1, 9.0-2, and 9.0-3 were not identical. The original release details are recorded in the official Proton changelog, while the broader release context was covered by GamingOnLinux and Phoronix.

The biggest technical improvements

Wine 9.0 as the foundation

Proton 9.0 was rebased on Wine 9.0, bringing a large set of upstream Windows-compatibility changes into Valve’s gaming-focused build. The benefit varies by game: an upstream Wine improvement can fix one title while having little visible effect on another.

Updated Vulkan translation

Updated DXVK and VKD3D-Proton components improved compatibility with selected Direct3D games. Depending on the title, users could see corrected rendering, fewer crashes, better shader behavior, or support for features that previously failed. These changes should not be interpreted as a blanket FPS increase.

NVAPI enabled by default

Proton 9.0 enabled NVAPI by default for most games. This helped selected NVIDIA-related game features and behavior, but it was not a universal promise of DLSS, frame generation, or better NVIDIA performance. Actual support still depends on the game, GPU, driver, Proton component, and configuration.

Fixes for high-core-count CPUs

Some older games behave incorrectly when they see more CPU cores than they were designed to handle. Proton 9.0 limited the visible CPU count for several affected titles, including Far Cry 2, Far Cry 4, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Dawn of War II and related editions, Prototype, and Outcast: Second Contact.

This is a playability improvement rather than a raw performance feature. The workaround can allow a legacy game to launch or behave correctly on a modern processor.

Games specifically helped by Proton 9.0

Valve’s Proton 9.0-1 changelog listed several games that had previously worked only with Proton Experimental. The list included:

  • The Finals
  • Sonic Colors: Ultimate
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri’s Revenge
  • Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Firestorm
  • Road to Vostok Demo
  • WITCH ON THE HOLY NIGHT
  • Dinogen Online
  • Photography Simulator Demo
  • True Reporter: Mystery of Mistwood

These are Valve’s release-note compatibility targets, not a guarantee of flawless operation on every system. Results can change with GPU drivers, SteamOS or desktop-Linux configuration, game updates, launchers, mods, and online-service changes.

During beta and release-candidate testing, Proton 9 also included fixes involving titles such as Sea of Thieves, Helldivers 2, and Tekken 8. Those examples should be distinguished from the exact contents of the original stable 9.0-1 release.

Did Proton 9.0 improve performance?

Not necessarily. Proton 9.0’s release notes strongly support improvements in compatibility, stability, video playback, rendering, input, and selected feature support. They do not establish a universal frame-rate uplift.

Improvement type What you may notice
Compatibility A game launches or gets past a crash.
Stability Fewer hangs, freezes, or crashes.
Rendering Videos, textures, or effects begin working.
Input Controllers, mouse, or keyboard behavior improves.
Performance Higher or more consistent frame rates.
Feature support Selected HDR, NVAPI, or other game functions become available.

A proper performance claim requires controlled testing with the same hardware, driver, game build, graphics settings, and Proton configuration. Proton 9.0 may feel dramatically faster when it changes a game from “does not launch” to “playable,” but that is not the same as increasing average FPS.

Why it mattered on Steam Deck—and why desktop results differ

Proton is central to Steam Deck gaming, but it also serves desktop Linux users through Steam. A fix that helps one platform may not produce the same result on the other.

Steam Deck uses different hardware, drivers, power limits, and SteamOS configuration from a desktop NVIDIA or AMD system. Game Mode and Desktop Mode can also differ. Deck LCD and OLED models may have different behavior in some cases. A title that works on a desktop should not automatically be described as working identically on Steam Deck, or vice versa.

How to select Proton 9.0 in Steam

For one game

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the game, or open its properties menu.
  3. Select Properties, then Compatibility.
  4. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Select Proton 9.0 or the desired installed Proton 9 point release.
  6. Close the dialog and launch the game.

Per-game selection is the safer option. It lets you test Proton 9.0 without changing games that already work with another branch.

As the global default

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Compatibility.
  4. Choose the default Steam Play compatibility tool if the client exposes that option.
  5. Select Proton 9.0, allow Steam to install it if necessary, and restart Steam if prompted.

Steam’s labels and menu placement can change between client versions. Valve’s Proton versions documentation explains the stable and testing branches distributed through Steam.

If Proton 9.0 is missing

  • Update Steam fully.
  • Search the Steam Library for Proton compatibility tools and install the required version.
  • Restart Steam after installation.
  • Try another stable Proton branch or Proton Experimental if the title needs a newer fix.
  • Check the game’s ProtonDB reports for title-specific information.

Most users should use Proton supplied by Steam rather than manually building or installing Proton.

When to use Proton 9.0, Experimental, or an older branch

Choose Proton 9.0 when:

  • The game appears in Proton 9.0’s changelog or has a fix associated with that release.
  • A legacy title fails on a high-core-count processor.
  • Video playback, input, launcher behavior, or rendering is broken on another stable branch.
  • A newer Proton release introduces a regression.
  • You prefer a tested stable branch over an experimental build.

Choose Proton Experimental or a newer release when:

  • The game was released after Proton 9.0 and needs newer Wine, DXVK, or VKD3D-Proton changes.
  • A known fix exists in Experimental but not Proton 9.
  • A recent game update broke compatibility with Proton 9.
  • You accept a higher risk of regressions in exchange for newer fixes.

As of 2026, Proton 9.0 is not the newest Proton generation. Valve’s release list includes later Proton releases and development branches. Newer is often useful, but it is not automatically best for every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Proton 8 or another older version when:

  • The game regressed after moving to Proton 9.
  • A mod or launcher is known to depend on older Wine behavior.
  • An anti-cheat or prefix setup worked only with the previous branch.

Pin the older version for that game instead of downgrading the global default.

What Proton 9.0 did not solve

Anti-cheat

Proton does not automatically make every anti-cheat-protected multiplayer game work. Some anti-cheat systems support Linux or Steam Deck only after the developer or publisher enables and configures that support. A game may launch while still blocking online play, work on desktop Linux but not Deck, or stop working after a server-side or game update. See Valve’s Steamworks Proton guidance for the developer-side requirements.

Launchers, DRM, and unsupported games

Third-party launchers, DRM, video codecs, and custom Windows services can remain failure points. A release that fixes one launcher does not establish compatibility with every launcher. “More playable games” does not mean all Steam games now work on Linux.

Native Linux versions

A game with a native Linux build may behave differently from its Windows version under Proton. Forcing Proton can switch Steam to the Windows build, so this is an advanced choice rather than a default recommendation. Native does not automatically mean better, but Proton does not automatically mean better either.

Prefixes and saves

Changing Proton versions can update a game’s prefix. Back up important saves before experimenting, particularly when mods or third-party launchers are involved. Steam Cloud is useful but is not a complete substitute for a local backup.

Troubleshooting a Proton 9.0 problem

  1. Verify the game files in Steam.
  2. Test the current stable Proton version.
  3. Test Proton Experimental only when a newer fix may be relevant.
  4. Remove custom launch options.
  5. Test without third-party overlays or mods.
  6. Check GPU drivers and Vulkan support.
  7. Compare current reports on ProtonDB.
  8. Report reproducible problems to the Proton issue tracker with hardware, driver, game, Proton version, and logs.

One documented fallback is:

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

This replaces the usual Vulkan-based DXVK path with WineD3D’s OpenGL renderer. It can help diagnose Vulkan-related failures, but it is generally a troubleshooting fallback, not the recommended performance setting. Launch options are title-specific and can create new problems.

ProtonDB reports are useful user evidence, not controlled certification. They may become outdated after game, driver, or Proton updates.

Proton 9.0 versus Proton-GE

Advanced users may also encounter Proton-GE, a community-maintained build containing patches that may not yet be in Valve’s stable branch. It can be useful for a specific game, but it is not Valve’s QA-tested stable Proton branch and can complicate troubleshooting. Test the official Steam branches first unless a known Proton-GE fix directly addresses your problem.

Verdict

Proton 9.0-1 was a meaningful Linux gaming milestone. Its Wine 9.0 base, updated graphics components, NVAPI change, high-core-count CPU work, and title-specific fixes broadened the number of Windows games that could launch and behave correctly on Linux and Steam Deck.

Its importance was compatibility, not a guaranteed FPS boost. Proton 9.0 did not remove the need to test individual games, did not make anti-cheat universal, and is no longer the newest Proton branch in 2026. Start with the version that works for the specific game, test Proton 9.0 per game when its changelog matches your problem, and roll back if a newer branch regresses.
