Play! is the only directly relevant native iOS PlayStation 2 emulator confirmed by the available evidence for the 2025-era iPhone and iPad landscape. It is open source and does not require a PS2 BIOS, but compatibility and speed vary sharply by game, device, iOS version and runtime setup. The often-repeated list of “six best PS2 emulators” mixes one native emulator with streaming clients, virtual machines, front ends and Android-only projects.
What the “six emulators” lists get wrong
The title “6 Best PS2 Emulators for iOS in 2025” is misleading because most entries commonly presented under it do not run PS2 software natively on iOS. The comparison that popularized the list includes alternatives that stream an emulator from another machine, virtualize another operating system or refer to software intended for Android. Play!: the native iOS choice
What is established
Play! has an iOS build, is open source and does not require a PlayStation 2 BIOS according to the cited comparison. That makes it fundamentally different from AetherSX2 or NetherSX2 listings that advertise an iPhone IPA without an official project channel. A video published on April 20, 2025 demonstrates a Play! build labeled “v0.68” on iPhone and iPad, but the available evidence does not establish that v0.68 is still the current release as of August 7, 2026: video demonstration.
Compatibility is game-by-game
Play! is not equivalent to PCSX2, AetherSX2 or NetherSX2 in compatibility. User reports describe titles that boot with severe slowdown, black screens or no playable output; even a game marked “Playable” can perform poorly on a particular iPhone or iPad. Why AetherSX2 and NetherSX2 are not iPhone downloads
AetherSX2’s project FAQ describes Google Play installation and Android APK distribution, including APK availability beginning December 28, 2021 for devices without Google Play. An APK cannot be installed natively on iOS; the official FAQ is here.
NetherSX2 is likewise associated with Android. The available documentation and user reports do not establish a successful official iOS port: Odin user guide and user discussion.

Pages offering an “AetherSX2 iOS IPA,” “NetherSX2 iOS” or “AetherSX2_iOS_v1.5_Mod.ipa” are not supported by the project sources. Their claims of being official, current, stable or unlocked do not establish authorship, code provenance, signing integrity or a trustworthy release channel. Examples include AppZennSystem and aethersx2.app; treat them as unverified third-party downloads.
What running Play! on iOS generally involves
Play! is not necessarily an App Store-style install-and-play experience. User reports repeatedly mention a sideloading workflow such as SideStore or a comparable method, a pairing file, JIT activation and periodic app refreshing. The exact controls and requirements can change with the iOS release and app build, and the available sources do not provide an authoritative current button-by-button procedure.

JIT and installation failure modes
- JIT dependency: users report needing JIT for practical performance. Without it, a title may fail to start or run unusably.
- Missing verification control: one report says the expected “Verify Integrity” control did not appear in the relevant VPN/settings area. That is anecdotal and not a universal diagnosis: reported case.
- Operating-system regression: one user says Play! worked on iOS 18 or earlier but not iOS 26. No official compatibility statement independently confirms that pattern: reported case.
Hardware expectations
There is no reliable official minimum iPhone or iPad model in the available evidence. Reports mention high-end hardware such as an A17 Pro iPhone 15 Pro or an M1 iPad for some demanding games, while lighter software may boot on less powerful devices. Consider those examples, not a guaranteed specification: hardware discussion.
Image size is not a performance test. A smaller PS2 image does not necessarily run better; the workload created by the game, graphics renderer, device and runtime constraints matters more: reported explanation.

Expect title-specific glitches
Black screens are a real reported edge case. Burnout 3, for example, was reported to boot to a black screen on an M5 iPad Pro, but the report does not identify whether the cause was the game, renderer, JIT state, build or iOS version. Do not treat one device’s result as a compatibility verdict.

RetroArch
RetroArch is a front end, not proof of a working native iOS PS2 emulator. The available material mentions RetroArch and PCSX2 generally but does not verify a current official iOS PCSX2 core, version, installation path or reliable PS2 support on iPhone and iPad: reference material.

UTM
UTM SE can be obtained from the App Store, with other builds following UTM’s own instructions, but it is a virtualization approach. It runs another operating system or emulation environment rather than providing a native iOS PS2 core. Its inclusion in a list of PS2 “emulators” should therefore be labeled as an indirect route.
Streaming and remote play
A client that streams video from a PC or cloud machine running PCSX2 is useful if you already have that host, but it is not emulation on the iPhone or iPad. Network latency, host availability and video quality become part of the experience.
How to choose without wasting time
- Want native iOS emulation: investigate Play! and verify that the build and sideloading method you use come from a trustworthy project channel.
- Want the broadest mature PS2 compatibility: run a proven emulator on a supported desktop or Android device, or stream it to iOS; do not expect AetherSX2 or NetherSX2 to install natively on iOS.
- Want the least setup: use a remote-play client with an existing emulator host, accepting that this is streaming rather than local emulation.
- See an IPA promising “official AetherSX2 iOS” or “60FPS unlock”: stop and verify provenance before installing. The project documentation does not support those claims.
Bottom line for iPhone and iPad owners
For a genuinely native PS2 emulator, Play! is the only option directly confirmed by the available 2025-era evidence. It can be worth experimenting with on capable hardware, but results are uneven and installation may depend on sideloading and JIT. AetherSX2 and NetherSX2 remain Android projects; RetroArch, UTM and streaming clients should not be presented as equivalent native iOS PS2 emulators.
