Short answer: a modified PS5 can run the Linux version of RPCS3 and emulate selected PS3 games. That does not add PS3 backward compatibility to the normal PS5, and the most demanding games can still perform worse than they did on original PS3 hardware.

The result is an important technical demonstration, not a consumer feature. Digital Foundry’s test used a PS5 capable of booting Linux through an exploit or other unsupported modification, then ran RPCS3 outside Sony’s standard operating system. Earlier public reports had already discussed PS3 software running on hacked PS5 hardware, so “for the first time” should be understood as referring to this particular public test or its broader documented game lineup—not the first PS3 game ever shown running on a PS5.

What was actually tested?

Digital Foundry tested the open-source RPCS3 emulator on a PS5 running Linux. The experiment included demanding games such as Killzone 2, Killzone 3, MotorStorm, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, MotorStorm: Apocalypse, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto IV and Ridge Racer 7.

The important qualification is the software path:

  1. The PS5 was modified or exploited so it could boot Linux.
  2. Linux was installed or booted using storage associated with the console, including an SSD-based setup described in coverage.
  3. The Linux build of RPCS3 was launched as a normal Linux application.

This was not RPCS3 running as a native application inside the ordinary PS5 operating system. It was also not a hidden Sony setting, a PlayStation Store download, or a supported way to insert a PS3 disc and play it.

The reported setup involved exploitable firmware, with some coverage citing firmware 6.02 or earlier. That number describes the reported test environment rather than a permanent universal rule: exploit and firmware compatibility can change, and updating a console may remove access to a particular method.

RPCS3 is a free, open-source PS3 emulator and debugger for Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD. Its official project information and compatibility database are available at GitHub and RPCS3’s compatibility site.

Which PS3 games worked well?

The results varied sharply from game to game. Some titles benefited from the PS5’s much stronger graphics hardware, while others were limited by the cost of reproducing the PS3’s unusual CPU architecture.

Game Reported result What it shows
Ridge Racer 7 One of the strongest performers in the test coverage. Some PS3 workloads translate effectively to modern hardware.
MotorStorm Reported around 1440p/30fps in the tested configuration. Higher resolution is possible, but results remain title-specific.
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Reportedly reached 4K/30fps. A strong result does not establish compatibility for the whole series.
MotorStorm: Apocalypse Improved after changes related to MLAA processing. Removing an expensive effect can make a major difference.
Killzone 3 Reported around 4K/30fps through much of testing after MLAA was disabled. This was a patched, configuration-dependent result rather than an untouched baseline.
Killzone 2 Reported below original-console performance. Some SPU-heavy workloads remain difficult despite the PS5’s GPU power.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Playable in testing, but with notable performance problems. Booting or reaching gameplay is not the same as accurate, stable emulation.
God of War: Ascension Reported below the original PS3 experience. CPU and synchronization costs can dominate in demanding games.
Grand Theft Auto IV Included in the test coverage. No universal frame-rate claim should be inferred without the exact test data and configuration.

Resolution and frame-rate figures above describe reported results from a particular emulator build, renderer, patch set and configuration. They are not guaranteed capabilities for every PS5, Linux setup or game version.

Why does the PS5 struggle with some AAA games?

The central problem is not simply whether the PS5 has enough graphics power. The PS3 used IBM’s Cell Broadband Engine, combining a Power Processing Element with specialized Synergistic Processing Elements, commonly called SPUs. Developers often used those SPUs for animation, physics, post-processing, decompression, anti-aliasing and other tightly coordinated tasks.

The PS5 instead uses an AMD Zen 2 CPU and an RDNA 2-class GPU. RPCS3 has to reproduce the PS3’s CPU, SPU, graphics, operating-system and I/O behavior on that very different hardware. The PS5 GPU makes resolution scaling comparatively straightforward, but CPU-side emulation, synchronization and SPU-heavy workloads can consume the available performance budget.

A useful simplification is this: the PS5 can often draw a PS3 game at a much higher resolution, but it cannot always reproduce the PS3’s specialized processor behavior quickly enough to maintain the original frame rate.

That is why a game can output 4K and still suffer stutter or slowdowns. The limiting factor may be emulation throughput rather than the number of pixels being rendered.

Why disabling MLAA can help

Some PS3 games assigned anti-aliasing work to the SPUs. In those cases, MLAA is not merely a lightweight visual toggle. Reproducing it accurately can add a substantial emulation workload.

Disabling MLAA can improve performance because the emulator no longer has to reproduce that expensive processing. Coverage reported a significant improvement for Killzone 3 after this type of change. The trade-off is reduced image quality or a presentation that differs from the original game.

This distinction matters when judging an emulation result:

  • Accurate emulation aims to reproduce the original behavior.
  • A patched result may disable effects or apply game-specific fixes.
  • Higher output resolution improves clarity but does not guarantee stable performance.
  • Playable might mean that a game reaches interactive gameplay, not that it completes without crashes, timing problems or visual defects.

Is this official PS5 backward compatibility?

No. It belongs to a different category from Sony’s supported features:

  • Official backward compatibility: PS5 system software, menus, licenses, saves and support are integrated by Sony.
  • Cloud streaming: selected PS3 games can be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium where the catalog and service support them.
  • Ports and remasters: a game is adapted or rebuilt for newer PlayStation hardware.
  • Homebrew and emulation: unofficial software runs through a modified environment.
  • This experiment: Linux runs on a modified PS5, and RPCS3 runs inside Linux.

The standard retail PS5 does not gain a PS3 emulator because this demonstration exists. There is no normal PS5 menu option, generally installable RPCS3 package, guaranteed controller integration or Sony support.

What would a person need to reproduce it?

A reported setup requires substantially more than owning a PS5:

  • A PS5 compatible with a Linux-enabling exploit or unsupported hack.
  • Firmware that remains vulnerable to the relevant method.
  • A Linux installation or boot process, potentially involving internal or external SSD storage.
  • A compatible Linux build of RPCS3.
  • Legally obtained PS3 firmware and game data.
  • Game-specific configuration, patches and troubleshooting.

Firmware exploits, Linux boot methods and compatibility change quickly, so the reported setup should not be treated as a timeless tutorial. Users should consult RPCS3’s official documentation, use legitimately dumped firmware and game data, and consider the laws applicable in their location.

Potential problems include losing exploit compatibility after a system update, game-specific crashes, shader-compilation stutter, incorrect audio or cutscenes, input issues, online-service failures, save incompatibility and long-session instability. A short video clip or successful boot does not prove that a game is reliable from start to finish.

Does this prove Sony could add PS3 emulation?

It proves something narrower: a technically optimized emulator can run selected PS3 software on PS5 hardware under Linux. It does not prove that Sony could ship a universal, polished PS3 emulator with little additional work.

An official product would also need:

  • A secure and supported implementation inside PS5 system software.
  • Disc, digital-license and regional-version handling.
  • Save-data, trophy, account and user-interface integration.
  • Correct audio, video, peripherals, networking and suspend/resume behavior.
  • Game-specific fixes and extensive quality assurance.
  • Legal and commercial clearance for each supported title.
  • A support policy for customers when a game fails during a later level or cutscene.

Sony could potentially benefit from internal documentation, controlled hardware APIs, first-party patches and source-code access for some games. That might produce better results than a public emulator in particular cases. But it would not remove the underlying difficulty of reproducing Cell and SPU behavior, and it would not guarantee that every PS3 game could meet an official quality bar.

The same caution applies to the PS5 Pro. The results discussed here focus on base PS5 hardware, and a faster GPU would not necessarily solve a CPU-emulation bottleneck. They should not be generalized to PS5 Pro without direct testing.

What about a future PS6?

Digital Foundry’s analysis reportedly suggested that a future console with substantially more CPU headroom could be a better fit for full-speed PS3 emulation. Coverage has discussed a possible future Zen 6-based generation, but that is technical speculation—not confirmation of PlayStation 6 specifications, timing or capabilities.

The defensible conclusion is that a stronger future CPU may help. It is not that a PS6 is confirmed to solve PS3 emulation, or that every PS3 game would automatically work.

What should PS5 owners do?

Choose the route that matches the goal:

  • For convenience: check whether the game is currently available through PlayStation Plus Premium in your region, accepting streaming latency, compression and catalog limits.
  • For one specific game: check the exact title, region and release ID in the RPCS3 compatibility database. Separate disc and digital entries may behave differently.
  • For broad emulation: a suitable gaming PC with a strong modern CPU is generally the more practical RPCS3 platform because it offers mature controls, updates and configuration flexibility.
  • For an official local experience: look for a PS4/PS5 port or remaster when one exists.
  • For hardware research: the PS5/Linux experiment is technically interesting if you accept unsupported software, firmware restrictions and game-by-game troubleshooting.

Do not buy a PS5 specifically for PS3 emulation based on this demonstration. It is a compelling experiment for people who already own the hardware and want to investigate it, but it is not a reliable living-room replacement for a PS3.

Verdict

The PS5 can emulate PS3 games through Linux and RPCS3, and selected titles can look remarkably good at higher resolutions. But the experiment also shows why PS3 backward compatibility remains difficult: the PS5’s GPU is powerful, while CPU emulation and SPU synchronization still limit the most demanding games.

That makes the PS5 a promising experimental PS3-emulation platform, not a finished alternative to the original console. It weakens the claim that PS3 emulation is impossible on modern hardware, while strengthening the case that a dependable official solution would require substantial CPU headroom, game-specific engineering and platform-level support.
