PS3 Error 8002A537 Explained: Sony’s Sign-In Steps and What the Old Outage Reports Show

Sony's guidance for PS3 error 8002A537: check PlayStation Status, sign out and back in, test sign-in on another device, and power-cycle your router and modem. Plus what the 2019 and 2021 outage reports do and do not establish.

PS3 error 8002A537 is a server-connection error on PlayStation Network. Sony’s own guidance says the cause may be a server failure or a problem with the network connection, so the code alone does not tell you whether the fault is on Sony’s side or in your home. Start with Sony’s checks below. The “fix being worked on” wording in older coverage refers to dated notices from 2019 and 2021, not to a repair Sony is confirmed to be carrying out today.

What error 8002A537 means

Sony describes 8002A537 as an error connecting to the server. The code points to a connection between your PS3 and PSN that failed during sign-in. Sony lists two possible sources: a failure on the server side, or the network connection your console uses. It does not name a specific faulty part, and it does not by itself mean the console is damaged.

Players usually see the code when they try to sign in. In one public PS3 support forum thread, a user wrote “Can’t connect to psn” after receiving 8002A537 at sign-in. That is one person’s account, not evidence of how many people are affected.

Sony’s steps, in order

  1. Check PlayStation Status. Look for reported server failures or maintenance affecting sign-in. If an incident is listed, the cause is likely on Sony’s side, and waiting for it to clear is the sensible response.
  2. Sign out and sign back in. On the PS3, sign out of PlayStation from the XMB, then sign in again.
  3. Test the same account on another device. Try signing in from a different device, such as a computer or phone. If sign-in fails everywhere, the problem is more likely on the account or service side. If it works elsewhere but not on the PS3, the console or its connection is the more likely suspect.
  4. Power-cycle the router and modem. Turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then restart them and try again.
  5. Try again later. Sony notes the issue may be temporary, so if nothing changes, retry after a while.

Sony’s published steps use equipment you already own and waiting. None of them requires buying a console, router, modem, cable, or repair tool.

Reading the checks together

The table below shows what each check tends to indicate. Sony’s page offers these checks but does not say that any single result proves the cause, so read them together rather than treating one result as a verdict.

Check Result that points to a service problem Result that points to the console or home network
PlayStation Status Lists a sign-in or PSN incident No sign-in incident listed
Same account on another device Sign-in also fails on other devices Sign-in works on other devices but fails on the PS3
Router and modem power cycle Error unchanged after the restart and retries Sign-in succeeds after the restart

What the 2019 and 2021 reports show

Older coverage of 8002A537 describes two separate incidents. Neither is a current status update.

  • 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
  • Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
  • Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
  • April 11, 2019: PlayStation Universe reported that a Sony service notice listed PS3 users who might have difficulty signing in or creating a PSN account, and said engineers were working to resolve the issue. The report is secondhand. It is not Sony’s current support guidance, and it gives no count of affected users.
  • May 28, 2021: Push Square reported that PlayStation Japan was investigating another broad PS3 sign-in problem linked to 8002A537. As with the 2019 report, no number of affected users was given.

Those reports describe past incidents. They do not establish that a fix is in progress for a current problem. If you want to know whether an outage is live today, PlayStation Status is the place to check first. The reports name no individual spokesperson, so any statement you quote from them should be attributed to Sony or PlayStation Japan and dated to the report.

Technical context: the SSL receive mapping

A community-maintained PS3 Developer Wiki maps the code 0x8002A537 to SCE_NP_CORE_ERROR_SSL_RECV and pairs it with the on-screen message “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PSN.” That mapping suggests a failure while receiving data over the encrypted (SSL) connection to PSN. It is a technical reference maintained by the community, not Sony’s explanation, and it does not diagnose any individual console.

For practical purposes, the mapping supports the same split Sony describes: the problem sits in the connection between the console and PSN, and the fastest tests are the outage check, the second-device check, and the router restart.
