For most people buying a PS3 to play PS3 games, a tested CECH-2000 or CECH-2100 Slim is the best practical choice. If you need physical PS2-disc playback, look for a specifically compatible early model—such as a North American CECHA01, CECHB01, or CECHE01—and accept the added age and maintenance risk. The exact CECH code matters more than whether a seller calls a console “fat,” “Slim,” or “backwards compatible.”
Find the PS3 model number first
Look for the CECH model code on the console’s rear or underside label. Common examples include CECHA01, CECHB01, CECHE01, CECH-2001A, CECH-2501B, and CECH-4001B. Ask a seller for a clear photo of the label rather than relying on a listing title.
- CECH identifies the PS3 model family; the following letters or numbers identify a hardware series.
- The two-digit suffix generally identifies a sales region. Region matters particularly for PS2 discs and video formats.
- On many Slim and Super Slim codes, the last letter indicates the original storage configuration. It does not prove the drive currently installed is original.
- Storage can be replaced without changing the console’s CECH model. A listing’s claimed capacity is therefore not a reliable way to identify the hardware.
Use the full code for compatibility decisions. “80GB PS3” is not specific enough: some 80GB models play most PS2 discs, while later 80GB families do not.
PS3 generations and what changes between them
Original “fat” models
The original body covers a long run of models, including CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHE, CECHG, CECHH, CECHK, CECHL, CECHM, CECHP, and CECHQ. Regional lineups differed. Some early models have four USB ports, card readers, or SACD playback; later fat revisions removed features and generally reduced power use. Most fat models do not play physical PS2 games.

The launch-era A/B families have the strongest PS2 support, while C/E families use a different compatibility approach and support fewer titles. These systems are also older, hotter, heavier, and more complex than later designs, so their legacy features come with greater maintenance risk.
Slim: CECH-2000, -2100, -2500, and -3000
Sony announced the CECH-2000 Slim on August 18, 2009, with a 120GB 2.5-inch Serial ATA drive, two USB ports, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. It did not support PS2 discs. The Slim redesign launched globally from September 2009. Sony’s launch specification is at Sony’s CECH-2000 announcement.

Super Slim: CECH-4000, -4200, and -4300
The Super Slim is the compact body with a sliding disc cover instead of a motorized slot-loading drive. Configurations include 12GB flash-storage models and 250GB or 500GB hard-drive models. A 12GB unit can run games, but its limited internal space makes it a poor fit for someone who wants to install a substantial local library without adding storage.
Super Slims are the newest PS3 family and can be appealing for compactness and a later production date. Check the cover, rails, gears, and disc-loading mechanism carefully. Sony’s CECH-43xx manual states that these models do not play PS2-format software or SACDs and have limited original PlayStation compatibility: CECH-43xx manual.
Which PS3 models play physical PS2 games?
PS2-disc compatibility is limited to particular early models and varies by region. Sony says compatible PS3s play most PS2-format discs, not every title, and warns that some games may behave differently or fail to work. Check the exact code and, if a particular game matters, test that game on the console.

The regional list and compatibility warning are in Sony’s playable-discs guide. Do not assume every fat PS3, every 80GB system, or every compatible-model listing guarantees full PS2 compatibility. PS2 discs are distinct from digital PS2 titles, and PS1-disc support is a separate compatibility question. Sony’s model comparison also identifies later Slim and Super Slim families as lacking PS2-disc support.
Features at a glance
This is a broad buying guide, not a complete specification sheet: features and bundles varied by region and SKU. “Early A/B” refers to the earliest PS2-compatible families; “C/E” to later compatible families.

PS3 games are generally less region-restricted than PS2 and DVD software, but do not assume every game, account, or downloadable-content package will work across regions. Blu-ray and DVD playback follows disc-region rules; PAL/NTSC and television compatibility can also affect SD video playback. Sony’s CECH-43xx manual describes those limits.

Choose by what you want to do

For a PS2-focused purchase, ask for proof of the full model code and test the specific discs you care about. For a general PS3 purchase, a clean, tested Slim is usually more useful than an untested launch fat system. Avoid treating custom firmware or other modifications as a normal buying requirement; those bring technical, account, security, and legal considerations beyond ordinary play.

Early fat systems
Early fat consoles are attractive for legacy features, but have more age-related risk, higher heat and power consumption, and more complex internal hardware than later designs. Possible problems include fan wear, optical-drive failure, dried thermal compound, overheating, or other hardware faults. A yellow-light failure is a warning symptom, not a diagnosis of one specific failed component. Specialist repair documentation discusses hardware revisions and buying risks, but it is not Sony-certified failure-rate data: ConsoleMods PS3 buying guide.

Slim models are generally the safer practical choice for regular PS3 gaming than an early fat console, but used units can still have failing Blu-ray drives, fans, capacitors, or power supplies. A later series name does not substitute for testing the actual machine.

Super Slim systems
Check that the sliding cover moves and stays in place, the mechanism loads and ejects discs reliably, and the disc is recognized. On a 12GB configuration, verify whether a drive is installed before treating the console as ready for a game library.
Used PS3 inspection checklist
Before meeting the seller
- Request clear photos of the full CECH code, serial/storage label, and console from multiple sides.
- Ask for a video of a cold boot and a physical PS3 game starting, not just the home menu.
- Confirm HDMI output, controller pairing, disc loading/ejection, Wi-Fi, and whether the console has ever shut down or shown warning lights.
- Ask whether the hard drive has been replaced and whether the console has been opened, repaired, delidded, or modified.
- Confirm which power cable and controller are included, and whether the controller is genuine or third-party.
At the inspection
- Cold-boot the console; test HDMI picture and sound, then use the front power and eject controls.
- Insert and eject a physical PS3 game, then play long enough to check for read errors. Test a Blu-ray movie, DVD, or audio CD if those uses matter to you.
- Test Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB ports, and controller pairing and charging.
- Check that system storage is recognized and that shutdown is normal. Listen for unusually loud or grinding fans and disc-drive noises.
- Let the console run for 20–30 minutes and watch for artifacts, warning lights, or unexpected shutdowns.
- For a PS2-compatible model, test an actual PS2 disc. A seller’s claim or the CECH code alone does not establish that the console’s drive and the particular game work.
Walk away or price in substantial risk if
- The model label is missing or unreadable, or the seller refuses to show the console operating.
- There are graphical artifacts, repeated shutdowns, a flashing red light, or grinding/clicking drive sounds.
- A Super Slim’s cover fails to close or load a disc.
- You find corrosion, liquid damage, or a strong smoke smell.
- The hard drive is missing and the asking price does not account for storage replacement.
- The listing promises “backwards compatibility” without naming the exact model.
Storage: replacement drives and 12GB models
Many standard PS3 configurations use a replaceable internal 2.5-inch SATA drive. Replacing it does not change the CECH identity. A new drive may require system software to be reinstalled, and the space shown to the user is lower than the advertised capacity because the system reserves space and reports capacity differently. Sony explained the capacity distinction in its CECH-2000 launch announcement.
- Choose a 2.5-inch SATA drive that fits the console’s drive bay; check height and compatibility before purchase.
- Allow for less usable capacity than the drive’s label indicates. Disc games can still require substantial installation data.
- A basic reliable HDD is often a more rational replacement than an expensive SSD. An SSD can work, but the PS3 cannot make full use of modern SSD speeds; quieter operation or availability may matter more than a dramatic loading-time gain.
- A 12GB Super Slim needs particular attention: confirm whether a suitable hard drive has already been installed or budget for one.
PS3 Store status in 2026
Sony announced market-by-market PS3 Store closures beginning in selected Latin American markets in August 2026, with additional closures in Latin American and Middle Eastern markets later in 2026 and closures in other countries in July 2027. After a market closes, new purchases there will no longer be possible. Sony says previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. The dates and scope are in Sony’s July 1, 2026 Store update. The console remains useful for physical PS3 games, Blu-ray playback, local media, and eligible previously purchased downloads.
