A PS4 sign-in failure can come from a PlayStation Network outage, your home network, outdated system software, account credentials, 2-step verification, a suspension, or damaged local data. Work through the checks below in order: they begin with reversible tests and leave data-erasing options until last.
Quick checklist
- Check the live PlayStation Status page.
- Restart the PS4, modem, and router, then run the connection test.
- Install any available PS4 system-software update.
- Try signing in on the web or PlayStation App and verify the account email, password, and 2-step verification.
- Record the exact PS4 error code and check for an account or console suspension.
- Use Safe Mode only after network and account checks fail.
- Back up your data before considering Initialize PS4 or reinstalling system software.
1. Check whether PlayStation Network is down
Open the official PlayStation Status page. Check Account Management first; also check Gaming and Social if multiplayer or trophies fail, and PlayStation Store if downloads or purchases are affected.
If Sony reports an incident, wait and try again later instead of changing console settings repeatedly. A green status page only makes a broad outage less likely; it does not prove that your router, account, or PS4 is healthy.
2. Test the PS4 connection and restart the network
On the console, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Record the results for:

Sony documents this diagnostic path on its PS4 support page. “Obtain IP Address” failing points to Wi-Fi credentials, DHCP, signal, cable, or router problems. If the internet test fails, investigate the local network or ISP. If internet works but PSN sign-in fails, move to software and account checks. NAT Type 3 can restrict some multiplayer or peer-to-peer features, but it is not proof that your account cannot authenticate.
Perform a complete restart
- Turn off the PS4 completely.
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Turn on the modem and wait for it to reconnect.
- Turn on the router and wait for Wi-Fi or Ethernet service.
- Start the PS4 and run Test Internet Connection again.
This follows Sony’s router guidance in its primary-PS4 troubleshooting advice. For isolation, connect the PS4 by Ethernet using Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection, or briefly test a phone hotspot if your mobile plan allows it. A hotspot that works while home internet fails implicates the router, ISP, NAT, DNS, or home network—not necessarily your PSN account. Hotspots can consume mobile data and add latency, so use them as a test.
3. Update PS4 system software
Online PS4 features require current system software. Use the console’s system-software update option in Settings and install any update offered. Do not rely on an old firmware number; Sony’s current release changes over time.
Manual USB update when normal updating fails
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS4, then anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Download the official update file from Sony and save it as
PS4UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the PS4.
- Hold the power button until the second beep (about seven seconds after the first) to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Folder and file names must be spelled correctly and use uppercase as shown. Use only Sony’s file from the official PS4 support page.

4. Verify the account email and password
Your PSN sign-in ID is the account’s email address. If the password is rejected, use Sony’s password-reset process. Check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders, and make sure the message is going to the current sign-in ID. Test the account on the web or in the PlayStation App before trying the PS4 again.
Sony also documents a reset route on the console: Settings > Account Management > Sign In, then follow the recovery prompts. If you cannot remember the email, have lost access to it, cannot open verification mail, or see an unfamiliar email, online ID, or password change, use account recovery. Creating a replacement account will not restore purchases, subscriptions, trophies, or saves linked to the original account.
5. Fix 2-step verification (2SV)
A correct password can still fail if the 2SV code is delayed, expired, or sent to an unavailable method. On PS4, the settings path is Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification, as described in Sony’s 2SV guide.

- Request a fresh SMS or authenticator code and enter it before it expires.
- If your phone or authenticator app was replaced, use one of the backup codes saved when 2SV was enabled.
- If you have no phone access and no backup codes, use PlayStation Support to restore access; identity verification may be required.
- Unexpected verification messages or account changes warrant immediate account-recovery and security checks.
Do not disable 2SV as a casual troubleshooting step. After recovery, secure the account again and consider a passkey where your devices and setup support it.

6. Check for an account or console suspension
DNS changes, database rebuilding, and reinstalling software cannot remove a suspension. Sony distinguishes account, communication, and console suspensions; a console suspension can prevent accounts and some purchased-content functions from accessing online services.
- Record the exact error code.
- Check account status in Sony’s suspension guidance and My Support.
- Review email from PlayStation for the reason and duration.
- Use Sony’s official appeal or support route if one is offered.
Do not attempt to evade a suspension with another account or network.
7. Use the exact error code
Write down the complete code before changing settings. Sony’s PS4 error-code hub has the authoritative, current descriptions. These examples identify the immediate failure, not always its underlying cause:

8. If you can sign in but games are locked, restore licenses
Padlocks, missing add-ons, or license errors are different from a failed PSN login. After signing in, open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. Sony says this does not affect console data and can help with padlock icons, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes. See the license-restoration instructions. It cannot recover a suspended account or authenticate an account that will not sign in.

9. Use Safe Mode without erasing data
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS4.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
These steps are in Sony’s Safe Mode guide. Escalate in this order:
- Restart System — non-destructive.
- Update System Software — for failed or incomplete updates.
- Rebuild Database — scans the drive and creates a new content database; back up first.
- Restore Default Settings — resets settings without deleting games, applications, captures, or saved data.
- Initialize PS4 — deletes all user data.
- Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) — deletes user data and removes the PS4 firmware.
Safe Mode is unlikely to fix a wrong password, missing 2SV code, outage, or suspension. It is appropriate when local software, storage indexing, or settings appear damaged.
10. Back up before destructive troubleshooting
Use an FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with at least twice the space required by the backup. Sony’s procedure is:

- Sync trophies from the function screen.
- Insert the USB drive.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up, choose the data, confirm, and wait for completion.
See Sony’s PS4 backup guidance. Sony notes that someone who has never signed in to PlayStation may only be able to restore saved data to the original PS4 that created the backup. Never initialize until the backup is verified.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Use the contact guide when account recovery fails; you lack the email, phone, or backup codes; you suspect unauthorized changes; you believe the account or console was suspended; or the PS4 fails across multiple networks after updating and completing non-destructive checks. Contact Sony as well if the console cannot enter Safe Mode or repeatedly fails system-software operations.
