If your PS4 says a USB storage device is not connected, first note the exact error code and whether you want to use the drive for ordinary USB file access or as extended storage for games. For Sony’s CE-37857-0 recognition error, reconnect the device securely and check that it is formatted as FAT or exFAT. For game storage, connect the drive directly to the console and use the PS4’s separate extended-storage format option.
Start by identifying the error and how you use the drive
Sony describes error CE-37857-0 as the PS4 being unable to recognise USB storage. Other codes can indicate problems specific to extended storage, so do not assume that every connection message has the same cause. Note the full code displayed on screen before changing settings.
Also distinguish ordinary USB storage from extended storage. Sony’s FAT or exFAT advice applies to USB recognition. A drive intended for installing PS4 applications must instead be formatted as extended storage through the console.
Try the low-risk connection checks first
- Reconnect the drive. Disconnect it, then insert it securely into the PS4. This is Sony’s recommended first step for CE-37857-0.
- Connect extended storage directly. If you are setting up or using a game drive, connect it to the PS4 rather than through a USB hub. Sony does not support a hub for extended storage.
- Check the intended format. For a device being used as USB storage, Sony says to check that it is formatted as FAT or exFAT. For installing applications, use the console’s “Format as Extended Storage” option instead.
Check the requirements for PS4 extended storage
Sony’s current PS4 support page specifies these requirements for extended storage. They are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every drive model will work.

Sony cautions that proper operation is not guaranteed for every HDD model. These requirements apply to extended storage, not to every use of a USB device. See Sony’s PS4 external-storage support page.
Format as extended storage only if that is what you need
Formatting can affect files already on the drive. Sony’s instructions explain how to prepare a drive for extended storage, but do not provide a data-recovery procedure. Do not proceed until you are prepared for the possibility of losing existing contents.

- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices.
- Select the drive.
- Choose Format as Extended Storage and follow the on-screen prompts.
Extended storage is for applications and add-ons. It does not store application saved data, themes, or screenshot and video clips. Applications can be moved between system storage and extended storage. If a drive is disconnected, its applications remain listed in the content area, but launching one while the drive is unavailable produces an error.
Stop extended storage safely before unplugging
Use either of Sony’s stop options before disconnecting an extended-storage drive:

- Settings: Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices > Stop Using This Extended Storage.
Do not disconnect the drive while the PS4 is shutting down or entering rest mode. Incorrect removal may prompt the console to repair the drive’s file system.
Use the error code to choose the next step
If the basic checks do not resolve the issue, match the on-screen code to Sony’s documented guidance rather than repeating unrelated fixes. The codes below are covered on Sony’s PS4 external-storage support page.

- CE-41899-1: Connect the drive directly to the console.
- CE-41901-5: Check that the drive is within the 250 GB–8 TB extended-storage capacity range.
- CE-41902-6: Use USB 3.0 or later and insert the device firmly. Sony notes that connecting a USB 3.0 drive too slowly can cause this error.
- CE-30002-5: Try formatting again.
- CE-30022-7: Format again; if the error remains, restart the PS4 and retry.
- CE-30006-9: Reconnect the drive and repair its file system, then format again. Sony says another HDD may be needed if the error persists.

A replacement is not the first fix for a loose connection, a USB hub, the wrong storage mode, or an unsuitable format. Consider trying another compatible external HDD only after those checks and the code-specific steps fail. For extended storage, verify that the individual model meets Sony’s USB and capacity requirements; Sony does not guarantee every HDD model will operate properly.
