Both cited model families share an eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. The standard PS4 is smaller and has a lower maximum rated power figure. Which matters more depends on your display, the games you play, storage needs and the specific console listing.
PS4 vs PS4 Pro: the hardware differences
Sony’s specifications show the clearest performance gap in graphics processing. The values below apply to the cited CUH-2000/CUH-22xx standard PS4 and CUH-7000/CUH-71xx Pro families; exact physical specifications can vary by model and region.

The specifications are from PlayStation’s PS4 and PS4 Pro technical specifications and Sony’s model-specific CUH-7116 Pro safety guide and CUH-2216AB PS4 safety guide. Dimensions exclude projecting parts. The guides give model-specific figures, so treat the size and weight ranges as approximate rather than universal specifications. Sony notes that some drive capacity is reserved for system use, meaning available space is less than the advertised capacity and can vary.
Does PS4 Pro play games in 4K?
It can, but the result depends on the game. PlayStation says the Pro allows native 2160p in certain games. Its product description also covers enhanced scaling techniques that can bring some games closer to 4K without rendering every image at native 2160p. On an HD television, PlayStation describes Pro game resolutions between 1080p and 1440p.

- PlayStation 4 Pro - the super charged PS4 - take play to the next level with PS4 Pro: See every detail explode into life with 4K gaming and entertainment, experience faster, smoother frame rates and more powerful gaming performance and enjoy richer, more vibrant colours with HDR technology
- 4K gaming and entertainment - games and movies shine with amazing 4K clarity
- graphics become sharper and more realistic, skin tones become warmer and more lifelike, while textures and environments burst into life like never before
- High dynamic range - With an HDR enabled TV, compatible PS4 games display an intensely vibrant range of colours, closer to the full spectrum that the human eye can see
- Enhanced games - PS4 Pro games burst into life with intensely sharp graphics, stunningly vibrant colours, textures and environments and smoother, more stable performance
Supported games may also use the Pro’s graphics headroom for sharper distant detail, anti-aliasing, visual effects, textures or shadows, or offer frame-rate options. These are possible game-specific enhancements, not features that every title necessarily uses. A 4.20-TFLOPS rating does not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate. Sony’s product page summarizes the distinction: “PS4 Pro allows native 2160p resolution in certain games.”
What do both consoles support?
HDR
Both systems support HDR output in the cited specifications: Sony lists HDR for the standard PS4 and 4K/HDR for the Pro. HDR support alone does not mean a game or television will use HDR; the relevant content and display also need to support it.

Choose the PS4 Pro if graphics and 4K matter to you
The Pro is the more capable choice if you have a 4K display or want the possibility of enhanced resolution, image quality or frame-rate options in games that support them. Check the specific games you play: the Pro badge is not a promise of native 4K or identical improvements across titles.

Choose the standard PS4 if size and simplicity matter more
The standard model is the smaller, lighter console in the cited specifications. It also has a lower maximum rated power figure. If you play on an HD display and do not need Pro-specific game enhancements, those physical differences may be more relevant than the Pro’s extra graphics capability.
Compare the actual storage and listing
Standard PS4 configurations in the cited specifications include 500 GB and 1 TB, while the cited Pro specification is 1 TB. Compare the capacity of the exact unit for sale, not just its name. Used-console price, condition and availability depend on the individual listing and are not established by Sony’s hardware specifications.
