The figures indicate the scale of the result: PS4 led decisively. They do not establish an exact sales ratio, because the totals have different cut-off dates and evidentiary bases, and Sony’s published figure is sell-in rather than a directly matched Xbox One consumer sell-through measure.
What the PS4 sales figures measure
Sony’s published hardware numbers are sell-in: units shipped into the retail channel. That is not identical to units bought by consumers by a particular date. Sony’s business-data page gives a cumulative worldwide PS4 total of more than 117 million as of June 30, 2022.
Microsoft’s investor-relations annual-report archive does not provide a comparable current Xbox One cumulative unit total on the page reviewed. PS4 sales trajectory
Sony’s annual figures show PS4 sell-in in millions of units by fiscal year. Sony fiscal years run from April through March.

The annual sell-in peak was 20.0 million in FY2016. The reported totals then declined as the console aged and the next generation approached; the figures describe that trajectory but do not, on their own, establish why it happened.

Earlier in the same trajectory, Sony announced on January 8, 2019 that PS4 sales had surpassed 91.6 million worldwide after the holiday season. That announcement is a dated milestone, not a substitute for the later cumulative sell-in total. Sony’s January 8, 2019 announcement
How to interpret the Xbox One lifetime-sales estimate
The 58.00 million Xbox One figure is a secondary analyst estimate dated December 31, 2022. The same tally lists PS4 at 117.2 million as of March 31, 2022 and identifies that PS4 number as official. The different dates and source statuses matter: the Xbox figure should not be described as Microsoft’s official lifetime sales figure, nor should dividing one total by the other be presented as a precise official ratio. What console sales do—and do not—show
Hardware-unit totals describe console scale, not software revenue, digital engagement, or overall business success. For example, Electronic Arts estimated that digital full-game purchases accounted for 62% of its measured full-game units in FY2021 across Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 combined. The defensible conclusion is that PS4 achieved a substantially larger disclosed worldwide hardware total than Xbox One. The exact size of the gap remains less certain than that broad result because the Xbox One number cited here is an estimate, while Sony’s figure is an official sell-in total with a different date and measurement basis.
