The “launching later this month” announcement refers to October 2023, not a future 2026 release. Sony began PS5 cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members in Japan on October 17, 2023, Europe on October 23, and North America on October 30. PlayStation Portal support arrived later, on November 5, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, the service remains selective: it streams eligible games to PS5 and PlayStation Portal, not every PS5 title or every game in a digital library.
Sony’s original announcement is archived at PlayStation Blog.
What Sony announced in October 2023
PS5 cloud streaming was added to the top PlayStation Plus tier, then called PlayStation Plus Premium. Instead of downloading an eligible game, a subscriber could launch it from Sony’s servers.
The launch covered three categories:
- Supported PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
- Eligible PS5 Game Trials during the trial period.
- Select digitally purchased PS5 games in the subscriber’s library.
It was never an entitlement to stream every purchased game. Sony said hundreds of PS5 titles would eventually be supported, but availability depends on the game, edition, country, publisher rights and catalog status.

Which devices support PS5 cloud streaming?
| Device | Original October 2023 launch | Current position |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Yes | Supported |
| PlayStation Portal | No | Supported since November 5, 2025 |
| PS4 | No | No PS5 cloud-streaming support stated by Sony |
| PC or phone | No | No general PS5 cloud-streaming support stated by Sony |
Portal cloud streaming is separate from Remote Play. Cloud Streaming connects to Sony’s servers and does not require a home PS5. Remote Play transmits games from the user’s own PS5 and still requires that console to be paired, available and configured. Sony added a dedicated Cloud Streaming tab to Portal’s home screen with the 2025 update. Details are in the Portal launch announcement.
Do you need to own the game?
Not necessarily. A game can be streamable because it is included in the Game Catalog, because an eligible trial is active, or because you own a supported digital PS5 license. Physical-disc ownership should not be treated as a cloud-streaming entitlement: inserting a disc does not automatically add that title to the streamable library.

“Select” is important. Sony says owned-game availability changes by country and over time. The current PlayStation cloud-streaming page and the PS5 cloud-streaming Store category are better checks than an old launch list.
Games Sony highlighted
Examples from the 2023 announcement
Sony cited Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys and Fortnite. These were examples, not a permanent guarantee that every title remains available in every region.
Examples from the 2025 Portal launch
The Portal announcement listed Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, Resident Evil 4, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Eligibility remains subject to regional and time-based changes.

Internet requirements and picture quality
Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum connection requirement. Its current recommendations are:
| Target output | Recommended bandwidth |
|---|---|
| 720p | 13 Mbps |
| 1080p | 23 Mbps |
| 1440p | 38 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K | 52 Mbps |
The 2023 announcement also promoted up to 60 frames per second, SDR and HDR where supported, 5.1 and 7.1 audio, Tempest 3D AudioTech on compatible equipment, and local screenshots and short video clips on PS5. A bandwidth figure is not a guarantee of good play: latency, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, ISP routing, server load and other household traffic can still cause delay or image breakup.

- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account with an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
- Open a supported game on PS5 or PlayStation Portal.
- Look for the PlayStation Plus Stream button.
- Choose Stream instead of downloading, then wait for the cloud session to initialize.
Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder or the live Store listing to verify a title. Menu presentation can vary with PS5 and Portal software versions, so the visible Stream button is a more reliable guide than a fixed menu path.

Cloud Streaming versus Remote Play
| Cloud Streaming | Remote Play | |

| Game source | Sony’s servers | Your own PS5 |

| Premium required | Yes | No for ordinary PS5-to-device Remote Play |

When streaming is useful—and when downloading is better
Cloud streaming makes sense when you want to:
- Avoid downloading large games and preserve SSD space.
- Start a supported catalog title quickly.
- Try a game before committing to a long download.
- Play on Portal while the television or PS5 is being used by someone else.
- Use a supported digital purchase without installing it.
Downloading remains preferable when you need to:
- Play without continuous broadband dependence.
- Minimize latency and image variability.
- Use games that are not supported for streaming.
- Avoid data-cap concerns or service outages.
- Play competitive or rhythm-sensitive games where input delay is especially noticeable.
Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it?
Cloud streaming alone is not the whole value calculation. Premium also includes the relevant Game Catalog, online multiplayer, cloud storage, discounts and Game Trials. It is a stronger fit if you regularly use several of those benefits, own a Portal, have reliable broadband and want to avoid frequent downloads.
It is a weaker fit if you only want one or two games, primarily buy physical discs, have unstable internet or expect every digital purchase to be streamable. Sony charges a recurring subscription at the current PlayStation Store price until cancellation; check the live PlayStation Plus page rather than relying on an obsolete 2023 price.

“The Stream button is missing or the game will not launch.”
- Confirm that the account has an active Premium subscription.
- Check the Game Finder or Store listing for your country.
- Verify that the supported PS5 version—not only a PS4 version—is selected.
- Confirm that the entitlement is digital; a physical disc alone is not enough.
- Test the connection on the same device and network, preferably using Ethernet on PS5.
- Reduce other household traffic, restart the app and device, and check Sony’s service and requirements page.
“Can I stream every PS5 game I own?”
No. Sony’s wording is “select” digital PS5 games, with availability varying by country, publisher rights, edition and time.

What changed after the original launch?
The key change was device support. In October 2023, PS5 cloud streaming was explicitly PS5-only. On November 5, 2025, Sony brought the feature to PlayStation Portal and added select owned digital PS5 games to the Portal experience. That evolution explains why older reports say Portal is unsupported while current Sony documentation lists it as a streaming device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a physical PS5 game be streamed?
Not automatically. Cloud streaming applies to select supported digital PS5 licenses, catalog games and eligible trials; owning a disc does not by itself create a streaming entitlement.
Does Portal cloud streaming require a PS5?
No, supported Portal cloud sessions use Sony’s servers. Remote Play on Portal is different and does require access to your own PS5.
Is 5 Mbps enough for reliable streaming?
It is Sony’s listed minimum upload and download speed, not a performance guarantee. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference and congestion also affect play.

PS5 cloud streaming is an established PlayStation Plus Premium feature, not a pending October 2026 launch. It began on PS5 in October 2023 and expanded to PlayStation Portal in November 2025. It can save storage and make supported games convenient to access, but selective eligibility, regional catalogs and network quality mean local downloads remain the more dependable option for many players.
