A DualSense that will not work with an ASUS ROG Ally can be failing at several different steps: Bluetooth pairing, Windows input, Ally controller priority, or the game’s own controller support. Start with a direct USB connection, check whether Windows registers button presses, then turn off the Ally’s Embedded Controller in Command Center. If Windows sees the DualSense but one game does not, focus on that game’s Steam Input or controller settings—not Bluetooth.
Sony supports DualSense connections to Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 over USB and Bluetooth, but game and feature support varies. Basic buttons and sticks can work even when adaptive triggers, haptics, or PlayStation button prompts do not. Start with these fixes
- Connect by USB first. Use a USB-C cable that supports data, connect directly to the Ally, and avoid a dock or hub for this test. Try another cable if Windows does not react.
- Test Windows input. Press Win + R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the DualSense or Wireless Controller, choose Properties, and check whether buttons and sticks register on the test screen. - Disable the Ally’s built-in controller. Open Command Center with the Ally’s Command Center button and switch Embedded Controller off. Restart the game and test again. ASUS identifies this as a fix when games keep using the Ally’s built-in controls instead of an external controller. See ASUS’ ROG Ally FAQ.
- If using Bluetooth, remove and re-pair the controller. In Windows, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove the old Wireless Controller entry, restart the Ally, then pair again.
- If it is a Steam game, change that game’s Steam Input setting. Try the game’s default setting, then enable or disable Steam Input. Restart the game after each change; there is no single setting that works for every title.
Pair the DualSense with the Ally over Bluetooth
- Turn off the controller. If it is on, hold the PS button until it shuts down.
- On the Ally, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Hold the DualSense’s PS button and Create button together until the light bar flashes.
- Select Wireless Controller in Windows’ list of available Bluetooth devices and accept any pairing prompt.
- Test input in Windows or Steam before opening the game you are trying to play.
If pairing fails or the controller repeatedly disconnects, make sure it is charged and remove any stale Wireless Controller entry from Settings > Bluetooth & devices using its three-dot menu and Remove device. Restart the Ally and try pairing again. If the controller was recently connected to another device, disconnect it there while troubleshooting.

Use USB to separate connection problems from game problems
A direct USB connection is a useful baseline because it removes Bluetooth pairing, wireless interference, and reconnection from the test. Use a data-capable cable, not one that only charges. Connect the DualSense straight to the Ally; if it is not detected, try a second cable and, where available, another USB-C port. Test before launching the game.

If USB works but Bluetooth does not, troubleshoot pairing, Bluetooth drivers, or wireless stability. If Bluetooth works but USB does not, suspect the cable, port, hub, or USB connection. A dock can add another variable, so leave it out until the controller works directly.
Use Windows to identify where input stops
Microsoft documents the Game Controllers panel, opened with joy.cpl, as a way to check controller input. The interface can look different across Windows versions, but the test provides a useful dividing line between Windows-level and game-level problems. Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting guide describes the method.
- No controller listed: Focus on the USB cable or port, Bluetooth pairing, Windows drivers, or the controller itself.
- Listed, but presses do not register: Reconnect it, try the other connection method, and test the DualSense on another device.
- Buttons register in the test, but not in a game: Windows is receiving input. Check the game’s controller support, Steam Input, launcher settings, and the Ally’s Embedded Controller toggle.
- Only some controls register: Check game profiles and remapping utilities, then test the controller in another game or device.
If Windows detects the controller but a game does not
Turn off Embedded Controller for external play
Open Command Center and turn Embedded Controller off, then restart the game. Some games continue to select the Ally’s built-in gamepad even when another controller is connected. ASUS recommends disabling the embedded controller when an external gamepad is not working properly; it is a troubleshooting step, not a requirement for every setup.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
With the toggle off, the Ally’s built-in controls may no longer control games. Turn it back on when you want to use them. If you are playing docked and cannot navigate Windows easily, keep a keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or working external controller available.
Adjust Steam Input for the affected game
Close the game before changing its input configuration. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > Controller page and test the available options, which may include Use default settings, Enable Steam Input, or Disable Steam Input. Restart the game after each change.
- Try Steam Input enabled if the game lacks native DualSense support or expects an Xbox/XInput-style controller.
- Try Steam Input disabled if the game supports DualSense directly and you want native PlayStation prompts or features.
Steam Input can improve compatibility, but it may make the game display Xbox button prompts. That usually indicates the controller is being presented through an Xbox-style input layer; it does not mean the DualSense is broken. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting Steam, isolating other input devices, and checking for conflicting software. Steam’s controller troubleshooting steps offer more detail.

For Xbox app, Epic, and other launchers
First confirm that the game supports controllers at all. Launcher support does not guarantee that every game accepts a DualSense natively; some titles expect XInput. Connect the controller, start the launcher, and then restart the game. If needed, temporarily close overlays or controller-mapping tools, changing one thing at a time. ASUS lists common PC launchers supported on the Ally, but individual games still determine their own controller compatibility.

Avoid running multiple input layers at once. A mapper such as DS4Windows or DSX is best treated as a later option for an XInput-only game—not as the first fix for every DualSense issue.

- Turn Embedded Controller off in Command Center.
- Disconnect other gamepads, USB controller adapters, and unnecessary Bluetooth controllers.
- Temporarily close controller tools such as DS4Windows, DSX, Handheld Companion, or reWASD, along with macro or overlay utilities.
- Exit Steam fully using Steam > Exit, reopen it, and relaunch the game.
The Ally can support multiple controllers, so Windows or a game may see more than one device. A remapping tool can also create a virtual controller in addition to the physical DualSense. Isolate one controller and one input layer at a time to find the conflict. Avoid deleting devices from Device Manager as an early fix; start by removing the Bluetooth pairing, reconnecting, and restarting.

Update the Ally and DualSense
Updates are sensible elimination steps, not guaranteed cures. Install updates in the relevant layers and use packages intended for your exact Ally model:
- Windows: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
- Ally drivers and firmware: Check Armoury Crate SE’s update area or Update Center for available drivers and firmware. Check BIOS, chipset, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, and graphics updates as offered. Use the ASUS support page for the exact model—original ROG Ally, Ally X, or another model—rather than installing a package for a different device. - DualSense firmware: Use Sony’s PlayStation Accessories PC application with the controller connected by a USB data cable. Apply any available update, reconnect to the Ally, then test USB and Bluetooth separately. Sony provides the application and connection guidance on its DualSense support page.
Reset the DualSense if pairing still fails
If the controller will not pair after you remove the old Windows entry, reset it using the small reset button on the rear of the controller. Turn it off, disconnect USB, and follow Sony’s current instructions for locating and pressing the button; controller revisions and support guidance can vary. Then put it back into pairing mode and connect it again. Sony’s support page includes reset guidance.

Before seeking repair, test the DualSense on another device, try another data cable, and test a different controller on the Ally if available. If the DualSense fails across devices and connection types after a reset and firmware check, controller service is more plausible than an Ally-specific compatibility issue.
Why some DualSense features may still be missing
A working connection does not guarantee every PS5 feature on Windows. Sony notes that available DualSense functions depend on the device and game. Basic buttons, sticks, triggers, and D-pad input are a more realistic baseline than adaptive triggers, haptics, touchpad functions, motion controls, microphone, or headset audio. Some features may depend on the game or connection method, and USB can be a useful test when a supported feature is missing. A game showing Xbox prompts may simply be receiving XInput through Steam Input or another mapper.
