A digital game does not need a disc, but access depends on the purchasing account and its license; a PlayStation Plus game can also depend on an active subscription and the title remaining available. Neither format guarantees that a game’s online services will last indefinitely.
What losing the disc means
Installing a disc game copies its data to the PS5, but does not remove the disc requirement. Sony’s instruction is direct: “Keep the disc inserted every time you play the game.” The disc acts as the ordinary authorization for starting that installed copy. If it is lost or unusable, installation alone does not provide the missing check, so you generally cannot play that copy until you have a usable disc. Sony’s disc-play guide explains the requirement.
Disc play also requires a compatible PS5 with a disc drive installed. Check the exact console model before buying or recommending a separate drive; Sony’s CFI-71XX quick-start guide describes that model family, not every PS5 configuration.
If the disc is present but the game will not start
- Confirm the game disc is inserted correctly and the console has a working disc drive.
- If it still does not launch, follow Sony’s disc-game installation and troubleshooting guidance.
What losing access to a digital game means
A digital purchase is tied to the account and license associated with the transaction, rather than to a physical disc. A lock icon can signal a license or access problem, but it does not by itself prove that the purchase is permanently lost. Sony recommends checking the account that bought the game and its transaction history, along with other possible causes, before drawing that conclusion. See Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting steps.

Check a locked digital game
- Sign in with the PlayStation account that purchased the game.
- Check that account’s transaction history to confirm the purchase.
- If the game is from PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and the game remains available.
- If another account on the console owns the game, check that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting.
- Check PlayStation service status, then restore licenses using Sony’s troubleshooting instructions.
A digital purchase and a subscription entitlement are not the same thing. PlayStation Plus is a paid subscription service; access to a subscription game may depend on the membership remaining active and the game remaining available. Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page and locked-game guidance cover these checks.
Can you play offline?
For digital purchases, Sony says that turning on Console Sharing and Offline Play lets people using that PS5 play the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games while the console is offline. Sony’s wording is: “Play your games and media even when the console is offline.” The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. See Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play guide.

For an installed disc game, keep the disc inserted each time you play; having the disc does not guarantee that every feature works offline. Individual games may require an internet connection for particular modes or services. Digital access offline, meanwhile, depends on the sharing setting and the game being downloaded and available to play.
How the formats differ when access is the concern
| Access question | Disc game | Digital purchase or subscription |
|---|---|---|
| What authorizes starting the installed game? | The game disc must be inserted each time. | A purchase uses the license associated with the purchasing account. A subscription title may also require active membership and continued availability. |
| What happens if the usual access item is missing? | A lost or unusable disc removes the ordinary disc check for that copy. | Account, license, sharing, network, membership, or availability issues can block access; check the relevant cause before assuming a purchase is gone. |
| Can it work offline? | The disc requirement remains; a title’s features may have separate online requirements. | Purchased and downloaded games can be played offline by users of the PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. |
| Does the format preserve online services? | No. A disc does not guarantee that a game’s online services will continue. | No. Digital access also does not guarantee continued online services. |
| What does it depend on? | A compatible PS5 with a disc drive and the game disc. | The relevant account and license; digital purchase and download also involve internet access and account sign-in. Offline play is governed by console-sharing settings. |
Neither format guarantees permanent access to every feature
Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for CFI-71XX says, “Service availability is not guaranteed,” and notes that “Online features of specific games may be withdrawn on reasonable notice.” That caveat applies to the services and features, not as proof that a particular game will stop launching. A disc does not preserve a publisher’s servers, and a digital license does not ensure that online features will remain available. The guide is model-specific; its statements should not be read as a complete account of every title, publisher, region, or future store condition.
