The DualSense Edge works with Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 over USB or Bluetooth, but that does not guarantee a particular PC game will recognize it natively. Native support depends on the game: it may recognize a standard DualSense but not the Edge, or it may work only when Steam Input translates the controller into a format the game accepts. Sony’s PC controller guidance also notes that features vary by title.
Start by checking whether Windows sees the controller, then test USB, firmware, and the game’s input settings one at a time. If the controller works in Windows and with Steam Input but disappears in native mode, the likely problem is the game’s support—not a defective controller.
Identify what is failing
“Not working” can describe different problems, and each points to a different fix. Use the symptom that matches your case:
- Windows does not list or respond to the controller: check the USB cable or Bluetooth pairing, then test firmware and hardware.
- Windows responds, but the game does not: investigate native game support, Steam Input, the launcher, and remapping software.
- The game works only with Steam Input enabled: the title may lack usable native support for the Edge, while Steam’s translation supplies a compatible gamepad input.
- The game detects input but shows Xbox prompts: it may be receiving an XInput-style layout, or it may not provide PlayStation prompts for that configuration.
- Buttons work but paddles, haptics, triggers, touchpad, or gyro do not: basic controller detection and feature support are separate questions.
- USB works but Bluetooth does not: focus on pairing and wireless support; do not assume the controller is broken.
- Input is duplicated, jumps twice, or fights mouse navigation: more than one input layer or virtual controller may be active.
Test whether Windows sees the DualSense Edge
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a USB cable. For this first test, avoid a hub, dock, monitor passthrough, or wireless adapter.
- Press the PS button.
- Press Win + R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the DualSense Edge, open Properties, and test the available buttons, sticks, and triggers.
joy.cpl is a Windows diagnostic panel, not a repair tool. If the controller appears and responds, the basic connection is probably working, so continue with the game and its input layer. If it does not appear, try another cable and USB port, check Bluetooth pairing if testing wirelessly, and update the controller firmware. If only some controls appear, that alone does not prove the controller is faulty; games and Windows input interfaces do not necessarily expose every Edge function in the same way.

Update firmware and check the active Edge profile
Sony’s PlayStation Accessories for Windows can update DualSense Edge firmware and manage its control profiles. It is a firmware and profile utility, not a universal driver that adds native Edge support to every game.
- Open or install PlayStation Accessories and connect the Edge by USB.
- Apply any offered firmware update. Do not disconnect the controller or turn off the PC while the update is running.
- Confirm that the intended Edge profile is selected.
- Close PlayStation Accessories completely, disconnect and reconnect the controller, then launch the game again.
Sony recommends closing the app and reconnecting the controller if a game does not work properly after using it. If the game still fails, test its input settings rather than repeatedly changing the controller profile.
Use USB as the baseline before Bluetooth
A direct USB connection removes pairing and wireless behavior from the initial diagnosis. It is also important for some PC features: Sony says haptics may require USB on PC, and the controller’s headset jack requires a wired PC connection. Haptics, adaptive triggers, and other DualSense features remain dependent on the title and its implementation.

For a Bluetooth test, make sure the Edge is not connected to another device. Sony says a controller can be paired with only one device at a time; switching devices requires pairing it with the new one. To pair it with Windows:
- Ensure the player indicator is off and disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold Create while holding PS until the light bar blinks.
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows and select the controller from the Bluetooth device list.
Bluetooth button and stick input may work even when a game’s wireless DualSense support or its advanced features do not. For diagnosis, compare the same game and settings over USB before drawing conclusions about the controller.
Disable Steam Input for a game with native DualSense support
Native support means the game reads the PlayStation controller directly instead of relying on Steam Input or another tool to present a translated controller. If a game documents native DualSense support—or you want to test PlayStation prompts and features—try its per-game Steam Input override:

- Open the Controller tab.
- Set the game-specific override to Disable Steam Input.
- Restart the game and test the controller.
A PlayStation support article for God of War recommends disabling Steam Input for incorrect prompts when using native DualSense support; for that title, native support requires USB. That is a title-specific instruction, not a rule for every game. If disabling Steam Input makes the Edge stop working, the game may not have usable native support for it. Re-enable Steam Input for that title rather than treating the result as proof of hardware failure.

Steam Input is a translation layer, not a repair for native controller support. It is worth enabling when the game does not detect the Edge directly, expects generic or Xbox-style input, is an older PC port, or is playable only after Steam translates the controller.
In the same Properties → Controller screen, change the per-game override to use Steam Input, then restart the game. Basic buttons and sticks may become usable, but the translated layout can mean Xbox prompts or altered access to PlayStation-specific features. Choose between native mode and translation according to the game and the features you actually need.

Change one input layer at a time. Steam Input, DS4Windows, DSX, reWASD, or another virtual-controller tool running together can create duplicated devices or cause one tool to hide or ignore another. DS4Windows’ Steam-related troubleshooting guidance describes cases where Steam may ignore DualSense or DS4 devices depending on configuration.
Troubleshoot games outside Steam
Steam Input does not automatically manage a game launched directly through Epic Games Store, Game Pass, Battle.net, or a standalone executable. If the game has documented native DualSense support, test that first. Otherwise, you can add the game or its launcher to Steam as a non-Steam game and try Steam Input, or use one remapper to present an Xbox/XInput-style virtual controller.
Adding a game to Steam is not guaranteed to solve detection. Some launchers, elevated processes, anti-cheat systems, and Microsoft Store sandboxing can interfere with virtual-controller tools. Avoid remapping in anti-cheat-sensitive competitive games unless the game’s rules and support guidance permit it. If a workaround fails, close the tool and return to a clean native test rather than stacking another mapper on top.

Fix duplicate input and conflicts
Common signs of conflicting input layers include a menu moving two items for one press, the game listing two controllers, one button triggering two actions, or mouse and controller navigation fighting each other.
- Close DS4Windows, DSX, reWASD, HidHide-related tools, and any other controller mappers.
- Exit Steam completely, including its background process.
- Reconnect the Edge and check Windows again with
joy.cpl. - Test the game in native mode with only the physical controller connected.
- If translation is needed, reopen Steam or one remapper and test with only that layer active.
Do not run multiple remappers as a first-line fix. A clean test makes it possible to tell which layer is providing input.
Separate controller detection from advanced features
A title can accept the Edge’s ordinary buttons and sticks without supporting its other capabilities. Sony says PC-game controller features vary by title, and the PlayStation Studios PC-games FAQ also qualifies wireless connectivity and DualSense features by game. Check the game’s own support information for the feature you want; “controller supported” is not the same as “every Edge feature supported.”
- PlayStation prompts: may depend on native PlayStation input and can change when Steam Input translates the controller.
- Haptics: require title support and may require USB on PC.
- Adaptive triggers: are title-dependent; their presence on the controller does not guarantee PC-game support.
- Touchpad and gyro: may be handled differently by each game or translation layer.
- Headset audio: Sony specifies a wired PC connection for use of the controller’s headset jack.
- Paddles and Fn buttons: are not necessarily presented to a game as independent, ordinary gamepad buttons.
PlayStation Accessories can manage Edge profiles, but it is not a universal per-game remapper. Steam Input may map controls it exposes, while third-party tools add their own virtual devices and configuration. reWASD’s supported-device documentation describes limitations in handling Edge additional buttons because the paddles are not reported to Windows as separate controls in the same way as some Xbox Elite paddles. Do not assume any one mapping approach will expose every Edge control in every game.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Symptom | Best first test | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Windows does not detect the Edge | Direct USB, another cable or port, then firmware utility | Connection, firmware, Windows detection, or hardware issue |
| A game detects a regular DualSense but not the Edge | USB, then test native mode and Steam Input separately | Possible Edge-specific native compatibility gap |
| The game works only with Steam Input | Use the per-game Steam Input override | Translation provides compatibility the native path lacks |
| Native play shows Xbox prompts | Test USB with Steam Input disabled and restart the game | PlayStation prompts may not be supported in that configuration |
| Haptics are missing | Use USB and check the title’s feature support | Feature-specific limitation rather than total controller failure |
| Adaptive triggers are missing | Check title support and test USB | The game may not implement the feature on PC |
| Paddles are missing | Check the Edge profile, then test one suitable remapper | The game may not receive paddles as independent controls |
| A non-Steam game fails | Test documented native support, then one translation method | Launcher or input-layer limitation |
| Input is duplicated | Close every mapper and test with one input layer | Conflicting physical or virtual devices |
When to suspect a hardware fault
Consider repair or hardware support if the Edge fails to respond in Windows’ controller test over USB, especially after trying another cable and port. A stronger hardware case exists if buttons or sticks fail outside games, firmware will not update, or the controller disconnects independently of a particular game or software layer. If possible, test it on another PC before replacing it. A game-specific native-support failure, by itself, is not enough to diagnose a defective controller.
When another controller may be simpler
If your priority is broad plug-and-play compatibility across PC games and launchers, and you do not want to manage Steam Input or remapping, a controller designed around XInput may be a better fit. That is an alternative for convenience, not a prerequisite: first test the Edge in Windows, over USB, with current firmware and conflicting utilities closed.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnostic path
- Does the Edge appear and respond in Windows using
joy.cpl? - Is its firmware current, and is the intended Edge profile selected?
- Does it work over a direct USB connection?
- Are all remappers and virtual-controller tools closed for a clean test?
- Does the game work with Steam Input disabled for native support?
- If not, does it work with Steam Input enabled?
- For a non-Steam title, does native support work, or is one translation method permitted and effective?
- If Windows itself still cannot read the controller across suitable cables or PCs, seek hardware support.
