A PS5 game can send a 2160p (4K) signal to your TV without rendering every frame at native 4K. The game may render at a lower or changing internal resolution, reconstruct detail with an upscaler, and then output a 2160p signal. Those are separate stages—and the distinction matters when comparing image quality or graphics modes.
What do native resolution, upscaling and output resolution mean?
Think of a game’s image as passing through a pipeline. The game first renders a frame, may reconstruct or enlarge it, and the console sends a video signal to the display. Each stage has its own resolution and settings.
- Native or internal render resolution: The resolution at which the game initially draws its image. “Native 4K” means the game renders at the target 4K resolution, rather than merely sending a 4K signal.
- Game-level upscaling: A reconstruction or enlargement step inside the game’s rendering pipeline. Developers choose and integrate the technique, sometimes using platform-provided tools.
- Dynamic resolution scaling (DRS): The game varies its internal resolution as performance demands change. An upscaler can then reconstruct the image toward a consistent output size.
- Console output resolution: The resolution of the video signal sent to the TV. Sony lists PS5 output up to 2160p (4K UHD); selecting 2160p does not reveal the game’s internal resolution. Sony’s PS5 FAQ
Upscaling does not make the original render native 4K. It uses information from a lower-resolution image to produce a higher-resolution output, with the result depending on the technique and the game’s implementation.
Does PS5 upscale games to 4K?
Sometimes, but there is no single answer for every game. A title may render natively at 2160p, render below 2160p and upscale, or use DRS so its internal resolution changes during play. The console can still send a 2160p signal to the TV in each case.

Ubisoft’s technical explanation for Assassin’s Creed Shadows gives one concrete example: it discusses a 1080p-to-2160p PSSR upscale as an illustration, not as a resolution used by every game. Ubisoft also describes how DRS can lower the pre-upscale resolution in demanding scenes to help balance frame rate and image quality. Ubisoft’s technical article
To find out how a specific title works, look for a developer’s technical explanation or testing that names the game, console model, patch and graphics mode. A console output setting or a TV’s “4K” label cannot tell you the internal render resolution.
Is 2160p the same as native 4K?
No. 2160p describes the output signal in this context; native 4K describes the resolution at which the game rendered its image. Sony says PS5 can output up to 2160p, but that capability does not mean every game renders internally at 2160p. Sony’s PS5 FAQ

For 4K output, Sony’s support guidance calls for a compatible 4K display and the console set to 2160p. The display and HDMI connection determine whether you can view that signal; neither performs a game’s rendering or game-level upscaling. Sony recommends the included HDMI cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable generally, and notes that 4K/120Hz output depends on display and connection support. Sony’s PS5 4K resolution guide
What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It is used within a game’s rendering pipeline, so its presence does not mean every PS5 Pro title uses it or that the game renders natively at its output resolution.
Sony’s support page documents an Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting for PS5 Pro CFI-7000 model-group consoles in certain compatible games. The setting is therefore not a universal switch for all games or all PS5 consoles. Check the console’s support instructions and the specific title’s compatibility before expecting to use it. Ubisoft’s account of its Assassin’s Creed Shadows implementation says PSSR worked alongside system software changes. Ubisoft reports that, in its testing of that game, PSSR was more stable than TAA overall and produced notably less shimmering. That is a game-specific assessment from Ubisoft, not a guarantee about other games or scenes. Ubisoft’s technical article
What is QSSR on standard PS5?
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a streamlined AI-upscaling tier for the standard PS5. Sony described it as a way to improve image detail and stability compared with conventional approaches, but did not publish an independently measured or universal performance gain. Sony’s QSSR announcement
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR, as an additional graphics option in patches announced with the October 1 announcement. Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that does not mean every game supports it now. Availability and results depend on the title’s implementation and graphics mode.

QSSR and PSSR are related by purpose, not interchangeable labels: Sony announced QSSR for standard PS5 and identifies PSSR as the technology for PS5 Pro. The announcement characterizes QSSR as a streamlined neural-network architecture with a hand-tuned PS5 implementation; it does not establish a universal comparison of image quality or frame rate between the two technologies. Rendering fewer pixels internally can leave more performance headroom for a game’s frame-rate target, but reconstruction quality affects the image you see. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows explanation notes that lower pre-upscale resolution can mean reduced clarity and artifacts. It also describes how pairing DRS with an upscaler avoids having to budget rendering for the game’s most demanding moment at all times. Ubisoft’s technical article

- The base render resolution, and whether it changes dynamically.
- Fine-detail handling and image stability during motion.
- Visible artifacts, such as shimmering.
- The target frame rate and how consistently the mode holds it.
- The game’s patch, console model and selectable graphics options.
A technology name alone cannot establish a universal winner. Ubisoft’s PSSR-versus-TAA comments concern its Assassin’s Creed Shadows implementation; Sony’s QSSR claims about detail and stability are qualitative rather than quantified benchmark results.
Does PS5 output resolution change game resolution?
No. Choosing 2160p sets the resolution of the signal the console sends to the display; it does not force a game to render internally at 2160p. Conversely, a game that renders at a lower resolution can still be shown through a 2160p output signal after its rendering pipeline reconstructs the image.
