Install the remote’s two AA batteries, then on your PS5 open Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote. Follow the prompts; if automatic pairing fails, choose Set Up Manually. TV power, volume, and mute are a separate infrared (IR) function that works only with compatible televisions and a clear line of sight.
What you need
- A PS5 console and access to its home screen.
- The PlayStation Media Remote and its two AA batteries.
- A DualSense controller (or another way to open Settings during first-time setup).
- Updated PS5 system software; Sony says an update may be required for some remote or TV features.
- A compatible TV if you want TV power, volume, or mute control.
The retail package lists the remote, two AA batteries, and a user manual. Internet access, a PlayStation account, and any required streaming subscriptions are separate requirements.
Install the batteries
- Slide off the rear cover.
- Insert two AA batteries according to the positive and negative markings.
- Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types.
- Replace the cover until it clicks.
If operation is intermittent or the range has decreased, replace both batteries together. For long-term storage, remove the batteries to reduce the risk of leakage. See Sony’s instruction manual.
How to pair the PS5 Media Remote
- Turn on the PS5 and reach the home screen.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select Media Remote.
- Choose Set Up Media Remote.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for automatic pairing.
- If that fails, select Set Up Manually and complete the instructions displayed on the PS5.
Immediately test the directional buttons, Enter, Back, Options, and PS. Pairing connects the remote to the console; it does not guarantee that TV controls have been configured.

Set up TV power, volume, and mute
During Set Up Media Remote, complete the television configuration when prompted. The remote sends IR commands, so point its top/front directly at the TV and keep the path to the TV’s IR receiver unobstructed. Test the TV power, volume, and mute buttons after setup.
Sony specifies compatible TVs, not universal support. Do not assume the remote will operate every smart-TV function, cable box, soundbar, or AV receiver. If your audio is handled by external equipment, its volume may not respond. Run the setup again if you replace the television; TV configuration must be re-entered separately from PS5 pairing.

Using streaming apps
The remote is designed for PS5 entertainment navigation, including supported streaming apps and disc playback. Dedicated service keys only launch services available on your console and in your country. They do not include subscriptions. App interfaces and playback-button behavior can change independently of the remote.

Compatibility limits
- PS5 only: Sony states that the Media Remote is not compatible with PS4 consoles.
- One PS5 at a time: Sony’s manual says one remote operates one PS5 console. Moving it to another console requires pairing again.
- Compatible TVs only: IR TV functions are not guaranteed for every brand, model, or connected audio device.
- TV changes require reconfiguration: Pairing with the PS5 and programming TV controls are separate tasks.
Troubleshooting
The remote will not pair
- Check that both AA batteries are present and oriented correctly.
- Replace both batteries if they are weak, mixed, or old.
- Install any available PS5 system-software update.
- Return to Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote and choose Set Up Manually.
- Move close to the PS5 during setup and retry.
- Restart the PS5 and repeat the process.
If it still fails, use PlayStation Support and its Repairs diagnostic options. The proximity and restart checks are practical recovery steps; Sony’s documented fallback is manual setup.
PS5 buttons work, but TV controls do not
Run Set Up Media Remote again, aim directly at the TV, remove obstructions, and test the TV with its own remote. Confirm that the television—not a soundbar or receiver—is receiving the command. If you changed TVs, reconfigure the remote.
The remote works intermittently
Replace both batteries, verify their orientation, check for drops or other damage, and make sure nothing blocks the TV’s IR receiver. A reduced operating distance is also a sign that the batteries need replacement.

A service button opens nothing or the wrong service
Confirm that the PS5 is online and signed in, that the app is available in your country, and that any required subscription is active. The buttons are not presented as user-remappable controls.
Is it worth buying?
It is a good fit if the PS5 is a household’s Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify, Blu-ray, or other media player and several people want a conventional remote. It adds dedicated playback controls and basic compatible-TV power and volume control.
It is a poor fit for a game-focused owner, a PS4 owner, someone with an unsupported TV, or anyone expecting a universal remote for a full home-theater system. A DualSense already navigates PS5 apps, so the Media Remote is a convenience accessory rather than a requirement.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pair the remote from Settings → Accessories → Media Remote → Set Up Media Remote, use manual setup if necessary, and treat TV control as a separate IR configuration with compatibility and line-of-sight limits. It is useful for PS5-heavy media households, but it is neither a PS4 accessory nor a universal home-theater remote.
